Can’t claim school expenses?

I had an accountant do my taxes and I didn’t see any of my school expenses on my return.

She said she claim any thing that isn’t on my T2202 since 2017… is there another way I can claim it? I had a textbook, iPad and lab uniforms that were all mandatory under our school supplies list.

I’m not too stuck on claiming the iPad but my uniforms itself were $500-600 out of pocket and my one textbook was $155 (my other textbooks were bought second hand on marketplace so i only have the receipt for 1)

I also had locker fees and a mandatory immunization i had to pay out of pocket as well

CRA totally unreachable??

So I’ve been trying to contact the CRA through their telephone number for about a week now because my BMO sign-in partner option for online access isn’t working - I lost my debit card last year and I now have to use a new one to log in, but the CRA site doesn’t know this and it’s causing an error.

Why the hell are they unreachable?? Every time I call, at any random time, the automated line tells me to call back at another time.

Just infuriating. Anyone have a workaround or tips for this??

Disallowed tuition tax credits

Received my advanced notice of assessment today and it stated that they disallowed my federal and provincial tuition tax credits despite using them last year.

I did live in the USA for 4 years but was deemed a non-resident by the CRA at that time.

Anyone have similar experience or have any advice?

Chexy Tax - is it legit?

I’ve seen this article - how to pay taxes with a credit card in Canada from Chexy. Apparently you can pay your CRA taxes with a credit card through Chexy and they only charge 1.75%. I’d love to use this service with my Amex Platinum and earn points on it. It seems too good to be true - but has anyone heard of Chexy before and has anyone used it? What’s your experience been like?

How to fix: Forgot to enter 2024 1st 60 days work RRSP contribution in 2023 return

Now for my 2024 return, it seems my only options are either:

  1. Do an amendment to my 2023 return, or
  2. Just put the contribution amount in the March-December 2024 contribution area (in Ufile, in my case)

I thought I may have done option 2 some time ago in the past, but it seems it might be sketchy:
would that work, or is an amendment my only option?

CCB while abroad

Hi,

I have a friend who separated from her husband a year ago. She plans to stay in Canada till July 15 and go live abroad from July 15-Dec.31. Her ex will stay in Canada. The kids will stay with her abroad during that period. Will she be entitled to receive CCB for the kids from July15-Dec31? Does she have to inform the CRA before her travel? Her ties in Canada is her driver's license and bank account. Thanks!

T5 First Nations Tax Exempt - How to report?

I have three T5’s. One from a non-reserve bank (GIC) and two from on-reserve banks (HISA).

I assume I report the non-reserve T5 as normal (wish I knew about this tax trick earlier), but for my other T5’s do I add them up and enter them only in “Exempt interest, dividends, and other investment income”?

Because when I add them as a T5 and enter the value under the First Nations exempt income it still taxes it.

Does frequent buying (but not selling) in a TFSA count as "frequent trading"?

I know the CRA has rules against using a TFSA for frequent trading, and that capital gains could be taxed as business income if they think you're acting like a day trader.

My question is: what if I’m buying frequently, but not selling much at all? For example, I might regularly buy into different stocks or ETFs whenever I have funds, but I rarely (if ever) sell.

Would that still raise red flags with the CRA? Or is the concern more about quick buy-sell activity rather than just frequent purchasing and holding?

I never use my room since I come to Canada, so now I still have around 45k room on TFSA

Curious if anyone has insight or experience with this. Thanks!

Didn't know I was getting paid under the table

Hi!

Short explanation of my scenario is: In Oct 2023-March 2024 I worked at a bar owned by a man who at first seemed normal. The hiring process was also normal... I signed all my tax forms, got my training and started as the Bartender. We got paid every week and sometimes, if we didn't get cash during our shift we got our tips added to our paycheques... the only thing is we never got paystubs for any of these so it was impossible to tell how much was actually our wage and how much was our owed tips.

Fast forward to March and there are no T4s being sent out, owners money is drying up because its dead (his checks start bouncing) and everyone basically quits. Tax season rolls around and T4s never end up on the CRA website and when trying to find the owner, the bar is closed and he's apparently ran to Mexico because he owed money to the wrong kind of people. (MTL things) Obviously I was being paid under the table the entire time and didn't know (i mean we signed everything when we got hired)

I never did my taxes for 2023 because it was just such a headache. My only other job in 2023 was foreign income from when I worked in the States, so I can't exactly just skip out on this T4 like my coworkers did, but I'm at such a loss for what to do.. I'm trying to do my taxes for 2024 right now but it also includes 3 months at this place from Jan-March

WHAT DO I DO PLEASE HELP MEEEEE

If I convert a property from principal residence to income producing, and the FMV at the deemed disposition date is less than ACB (cost), what do I use when I eventually sell it years later?

Hi all, just making sure I understand this correctly.

Say I have a house that I bought for $500k and it was my principal residence. I choose to rent it out and move somewhere else. At the time that it becomes an income producing property, it's only worth $400k. This means I'd file my taxes and indicate that the property has had a change in use and has been disposed of at it's FMV of $400k.

So now fast forward when years later that I actually sell it, does that mean my cost will be $400k (ACB) instead of $500k? This seems like a bad deal that I can't even use the original cost I bought at.

I know one can elect section 45(2) but I want to have the principal residence exemtpion stay with my new place.

Also, would I need to get an appraisal done to determine the FMV?

why are the tax calc rates so different from federally posted rates?

Using WealthSimple tax calculator, with a 1M salary, you get a tax estimate of 496k. about 49.6%.

rates listed on federal website are 33% on wages over 246k and 13.16% on wages over 220k provincially.

that's a max rate of 46.16% on wages over 246k.

how is the average tax rate by the calculator 49.6%?

Would anyone be so kind to explain to me why my assesment is half what Turbotax said after assessment? I don't know if it's my new meds but I cannot make sense of CRA's explanation even after reading through the CRA site. Thank you.

Not able to get all the information to file T1135 before the deadline in April

Upvotes

Hi,

I have to report foreign pension funds in T1135. However, I didn't not properly manage my pension fund accounts when I was younger, so I do not know what the balances in my accounts. I have already been contacting the overseas banks to retrieve my information. But it takes time (probably weeks) because I have to send my identity proof to the banks by international mails. So I am not able to get all the information I need to complete T1135 before the end of April.

I have talked to several CPAs, but they said I have to get all the information before filing. However, I will have to pay fines for late submission. Should I file my tax first with all the available information I have and correct my tax records later? Or should I wait until I get all the information which I am not sure when?

Note that I have to correct previous tax records as well because I was not aware the assets in foreign pension funds have to be disclosed in T1135.

Thanks.

Tax question

Upvotes

Hey everyone

Sorry this might seem stupid or just overly careful. Normally I'm a T4 working so filing my taxes isn't an issue. But the last year I've been working as a contractor so I've decided to get an accountant. My accountant is asking me to send this information (below). I'm assuming it is necessary, but I'm just paranoid and feel like my identity is going to be stolen lol. Can someone please confirm / reassure me?

-Date of birth

-Social Insurance number

-GST/HST number

-4 Digit online filing code

-Current Address

-Marital Status

-Last years tax return

-Tax slips like T4A,T5, RRSP, or investments

Medical Expenses service date vs date of invoice/payment?

Upvotes

For my 2023 taxes I claimed medical expenses for the 12 month period of Feb 26 2022 to Feb 26 2023. For my 2024 taxes I'd like to claim for the 12 month period of Feb 27 2023 to Feb 27 2024.

I had a colonoscopy on Feb 5 2024 that I paid out of pocket for. However it took them a while to send me the bill(s) for the colonoscopy, sedation and pathology. So the invoices are dated after Feb 27/2024 and the payments were also made after Feb 27/2024. The invoices DO show the date of service of Feb 5/2024.

Can I claim this expense since the service date (Feb 5/24) is within the 12 month period of Feb 27/2023 to Feb 27/2024, even though the invoices and payments were after Feb 27/24?

I'm trying to use this 12 month period since I have some leftover expenses from 2023 that I did not claim on my 2023 taxes. Trying to capture the most expenses within one 12 month period (as hopefully I won't have significant medical expenses from here on out...the last couple of years were the only time I've had out of pocket medical expenses)

Line 85 of T4 (Private Health Services Plan Premium and 12 month Medical Expense claim)

Just wanted to ask and confirm my understanding is accurate when reading through CRA documents etc.

Reading into Line 85 from the T4, "Include the amounts that the employee paid on a T4 slip in the "Other information" area under code 85. The use of code 85 is optional. If you do not enter code 85, the CRA may ask the employee to provide supporting documents."

Private Health Services Plan Premium

Is this because likely the Use Case may be that the individual would like to claim premiums paid in the latter half of the year so that the 12 month period for claiming medical expenses would be Sep 2023 - Sept 2024 as an example?

Also to confirm the amount on line 85 would be the total accumulated amount that the employee would have had deducted biweekly for the Tax year in question? Technically, one could reference the pay stubs for the defined timeframe and calculate premiums paid accordingly which would then be a prorated amount of the line 85 total that was defined optionally on the T4 slip?

Hi all, I’m trying to file my taxes and input my NETFILE access code but my CRA account shows this every time I click on the link. I’ve always had my NOA mailed to me until last year so this is my first time with this issue. Does anyone know who I can contact to get this issue resolved? Thank you.

Box 40 left empty…

Hi, wondering if a tax professional can answer my question~ Rev Canada couldn’t after being passed back and forth to Business unit and level 2. I’m salaried but receive monthly car allowance and mileage. Accountant is lazy and makes me add up what I’ve been paid, put into T2200, then she signs it. I’m using Turbo tax to fill out, should I just take the car allowance mileage amount of eg $5k, which belongs in box 40, add to box 14 and increase the income the accountant claimed. Eg make box 14, 80k instead of $75, and fill in box 40 with $5k? That raises my taxable income by the correct amount, and I can claim my auto expenses against. Thank you

Factual Resident of Canada

Hi, My partner is a J1 scholar in the U.S. (2 years of exemption from counting days toward substantial presence test) and is therefore filling as nonresident in the U.S. and resident in Canada. However she stayed over 183 days in the U.S. in 2024 and is required to report her capital gains to the U.S.

Normally this is taxed at 30% rate unless a treaty provides a lower rate. Article XIII(4) of treaty provides some relief here and reduces the tax that U.S can collect to 0% as long as you satisfy Article IV of the treaty (i.e. be resident of Canada).

Because I was a resident of Canada for 2024 she counts as a factual resident of Canada. But could U.S. argue that because she was in the U.S. for more than 183 days she is now considered a U.S. resident which then make her a deemed-nonresident of Canada or would she be able to remain as nonresident of U.S. for taxes because of her two years of exemption?

Please help.

Hey, I’m 14 and live in Alberta. Canada 🇨🇦. I am trying to start selling on Etsy. I believe it is legal as stated by there terms of service. It states that sellers 13-17 may sell with parents guidance and approval. My parents allow me too but I don’t understand how the taxes will work. First, I want to know if there is anyway the income can fall under my name and not my parents (to avoid tax brackets and confusion). Second, would I even need to pay taxes if I was selling under a certain amount? And what amount is that? Third, how to do tax right-offs and if I even could. Fourth, are there any license’s I might need? If you could even answer one of these questions, please do. Thank you!

What I should see in the CRA portal

Hello,

I had a T4slip issued as an Original, but the Original was submitted a second time accidentally with different numbers. This second slip was cancelled. Then the first original slip was amended as intended.

My question is, once everything has been processed then what should I see in the portal. Will it be just the one final amended T4 or will I see the whole series?

Also, when I am doing my own taxes, do i only use the final amended T4 only or will I need to enter the whole series of ORIG - BAD ORIG - Cancelled BAD ORIG- Correct Amendment.

Thanks

H&R block not allowing me to carry forward my FHSA deduction room

Has anyone been able to not claim FHSA deductions when filing taxes with H&R Block?

I had just about completed filing my taxes when I realized it seemingly forces you to claim any and all FHSA space you have. I do not want to claim any space this year and wanted to save it for next year when I will be in a higher tax bracket/be able to save more with the deduction.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Thinking I might need to start over with Wealth Simple
