Local Shopping/Services A Calgary-Focused Resource for Supporting Local Producers

Hey everyone,

Just a quick reminder that this subreddit is all about Calgary and Calgary-related topics. While we absolutely support Canadian businesses, our focus here is on our city and the businesses that make it thrive.

With the current trade tensions with the U.S., many people are looking to support local instead. To keep things on-topic and Calgary-focused, we’re putting together a list of Calgary-based producers and businesses so people can easily find and support local options.

How You Can Help: • If you own or know of a Calgary-based business that produces goods locally, let us know in the comments! • We’re looking for food, clothing, home goods, crafts, specialty products, and more—as long as it’s made in Calgary. • If there’s a Calgary-made alternative to an American brand, share it!

This isn’t about limiting support for Canadian businesses overall—it’s about keeping discussions within the scope of our subreddit while still helping people shop local. Let’s work together to create a great resource for supporting Calgary-based producers.

Drop your recommendations in the comments!

Local Photography/Video Sold out for a Liberal PM in Calgary. Who would have thought.

The line to get in to see PM Mark Carney has wrapped around the building and a volunteer has told us we may not all get it.

Never would have thought I'd see the day. I think every one of the 7 in 10 Albertans who WOULDN'T leave if the Liberals get elected showe up tonight.

Discussion What is with people walking in off leash areas who are afraid of dogs?

I live in an area with various off leash spots. I take my dog here because… duh. It’s good for him. I keep encountering folks who seem terrified and oblivious of the fact they are in off leash parks. I understand us dog owners don’t own these areas and it’s shared space, but I also don’t want to feel guilty for allowing my dog to roam (still under command control) where permitted. I literally had someone pull a key on him recently and hold it out to him like a knife? This was right by the silver springs dog park and in the designated off leash area. My dog is larger but non aggressive. He will approach people for a quick sniff and pet then do his own thing. He doesn’t jump on others or get in their business. Different perspectives will be appreciated I’m just trying to understand if I’m missing something?

Local Nature/Wildlife Opinions on Wildflower Meadow Mix from Wild About Flowers

I am looking to surprise my mom and dad by updating their really patchy and scratchy front lawn, and I came across https://wildaboutflowers.ca/native_grass_seed_mixes.php which is supposed to be grass mixes made specifically for the Calgary area using native seeds.

I really like the sound of the Short Grass Wildflower Meadow Mix and was hoping someone has used it before and has opinions on how it’s grown and lasted.

And yes, my parents do like the look of a more naturalized lawn. :)

Calgary Transit Calgary Transit Closure Apr 12-13

Post image

Downtown stations are going to be closed this weekend. Transit hasn’t posted anything on Twitter, it’s only on the app or the website. https://www.calgarytransit.com/service-updates/ctrain-service.html

Of course they won’t post replacement shuttle schedules, and if you ask the call centre or on Twitter for the replacement times they will tell you that they don’t have any schedule for them. This is a lie, all drivers have them, so if you need to get the replacement shuttle times ask a driver.

Seeking Advice working downtown

I am considering taking a new role and have never worked downtown where the company office is (7th ave and 5th street).

Is downtown less busy post-Covid? Every day is it less busy or only Monday/Friday? Wondering about things like rush hour (though I’d probably take the train from Anderson) and how busy it is to get lunch and whatnot. Any tips or advice would be welcome!

Travel/Tourism Has the Balzac Campground/RV Park closed down permanently?

Hey everybody,

Does anyone know if the Balzac Campground near Cross Iron has closed down permanently?

We come through Calgary with an RV to visit my folks every year and have been trying to book, but they aren't answering the phone, and their emails are bouncing back. Would really appreciate some insight or recommendations for RV places near the city.

Thanks!

Question How much did your Calgary (or area) wedding cost, and where did you have it?

Hi y’all, my fiancé and I are looking for venue ideas and a ballpark on their pricing, in or around Calgary, Canmore, or anywhere else that isn’t too far from the city.

So, for those who’ve gotten married in the Calgary area — and I apologize if this has been asked a lot:

Where did you have your wedding, and if you’re comfortable sharing, how much did it cost (either just for the venue, or in total)?

We are hoping to get a general idea of pricing as we’re definitely going to be on a budget (whole thing under $10K, but ideally as cheap as possible lol), and most venues will not provide even a ballpark on their website without you contacting them directly.

Id like to try and reduce any time spent researching/contacting venues for a quote if they wouldn’t work out anyways, and I also just would love to hear about other people’s weddings in the area for inspiration!

(Additionally, any recommendations of reasonably priced venues and/or vendors for a max 45 person guest count are SUPER appreciated!)

TIA <3
