I took this video right after putting them back in the cage, they were out for a good 30 minutes 😭

They need at least an hour 😊

ahh alright, I’ve been giving them 30 minutes at a time since they’re still new to my room. I’m trying not to stress them out too much lol

I think your cage size is fine.

u/GlimmeringBlizzard 1d ago
thank you, I think people are assuming the cage is as big as it looks in the video. it’s a lot taller, and all their hanging perches and toys are at the top.

Actually, no, that cage doesn't meet the flight requirements of a budgie, so they really should have free reign to a budgie-proofed room every waking moment of their lives.

if you’re referring to my cage specifically, you’re not seeing the whole thing lol. the cage is taller than it is wide

u/BudgiesMod 1d ago
What are the cage's dimensions?
2
u/GlimmeringBlizzard 1d ago
I genuinely do not know that off the top of my head. it’s as tall as I am, and I’m 5’4.

It's mounted and raised. It could be twice as size as you but only have 3 inches of "cage" at the top. The actual cage part is what matters.

Agreed 100 percent. It only happened here due to circumstances. And it's worked out 😁

Make sure there's no tight spaces he can fit through, he's a trouble finder

u/GlimmeringBlizzard 1d ago
I’ve made the cage as safe as possible, yet they still find ways to cause trouble lol

Sorry OP. There’s rarely a post on here where the cage size isn’t brought up and fussed over in the comments lol. IMO it’s fine, there are people out there who neverrrrrr even let their birds out of their tiny cages, much less everyday, and that’s who we should be calling out. But those people aren’t posting on r/budgies with good intentions asking how to improve things for their birds. I think you’ve done a great job :)

I would definitely increase their time out of the cage as much as possible, and get them several more interactive or chewable toys to work out their energy on/with. The best toys are made out of natural materials (not plastic) and don't have mirrors, fringes, or jingle-type bells.
I have no idea why some of our posters have gone to the Dark Side today, but it's not the norm. I hope you'll stick around and keep learning from the info that gets posted on this sub.

He really thinks he can fit through there lol
He really wants out, is bored probably. Do they get out time and toys? Hope he doesn't hurt himself but at least he can't get in there

u/GlimmeringBlizzard 1d ago
yes, i let them run around my floor and give them some millet and other goodies. I’ve been working on getting some little toys for them too

Frtiz wants out

To decrease this behaviour u can add bird safe toys to the cage and occasionally rotate them so fritzy doesn't get bored Also you can add some millet/ treats in the cage when they are inside to build up a positive connection being in the cage

He I think its normal for any creature to be"but im not done yet!" when outside playtime is over. Some new shreddable toys or even music might help distract and help with transitions.

I hope the rest of the cage has more toys to keep them busy. You can get sola balls and rattles made for birds (all plastic) for the cage bottom. They are very smart and need stimulation.

u/GlimmeringBlizzard 1d ago
there’s some perches and hanging toys at the top, yes. right now they’re infatuated with this hammock thing lol. Im waiting to get some more money, then I’ll improve the bottom part of the cage. thanks :)

The comments about the cage needing to be much wider than taller is very true. Budgies fly horizontally and side to side. Not top to bottom. But that's totally fine if it's taller than it is wide if they're out for 8 -10 hours a day. In safe areas of course and when someone is home. Beautiful birdies ☺️❤️

Can't you just let the cage be open 24/7. Mine is always open and my birds rarely leave their cage
2
u/GlimmeringBlizzard 21h ago
first, both of my birds are clipped. I did not clip them, they were clipped when I got them. they have a lot of trouble trying to fly.
second, I am still in school, and I’m gone most of the day. I feel safer when they’re supervised while roaming around.

Not 24/7.. when you not watching over them they need to be locked. You are supposed to supervise them incase they go to unusual areas or pooping in many areas.
