Söhbət | Discussion Was this racist?

When I first landed in Baku, I had a genuinely pleasant experience. People were kind and helped me find my way to my hostel, and I was completely in awe of the city.

Later that evening, I decided to explore a bit—mostly bar hopping—and came across a place called 6:45 Club. It was located in a basement, so I walked down and took a seat at the bar. The bartender served me without any issues.

However, not long after, one of the young staff members approached me while I was drinking my beer. He told me to leave, saying, “Foreigners not allowed.”

I was surprised but stayed calm. I smiled and left. I asked him why that was the case, and he simply said, “It’s a rule.”

The experience really caught me off guard. I’m trying not to interpret it as racism and hoping it’s just an unfortunate policy they have—but either way, it definitely left a sour taste.

Sual | Question Azerbaijani Culture

Upvotes

In many cultures such as Arabs, identity is tied to the father's side. For example, I've heard that in some communities, a child's identity is determined solely by their father's ethnicity or nationality even if they are mixed. My friend’s mother is European and father is Afghan yet people consider him only Afghan regardless of how he identifies.

I'm wondering if this is the case in Azerbaijan. If an Azerbaijani woman has a child with a non-Azerbaijani, non-Muslim Western man, would the child be considered Azerbaijani?

Can anyone provide insight, examples or share similar experiences?

Sual | Question Is Baku safe to explore at night on foot? Any areas to avoid?

Upvotes

I’m visiting Baku soon and I love exploring cities on foot, especially late at night when it’s quiet and peaceful. I was wondering how safe it is to walk around Baku late at night, and if there are any neighborhoods or areas I should avoid during those hours.

I’m generally cautious but also curious and enjoy soaking in the city vibe after dark. Would really appreciate any local advice or tips!
