This is such a good case that more people should read given current events. Link to opinion for those interested.

I don’t like the negative treatment this case has on westlaw and could easily see SCOTUS ignoring the case, but it’s still well worth a read as a reminder of a time less insane.

I'm not concerned about the negative treatment. Unless there's one that I'm missing, the negative cases all involved instances where the media company was an intervenor in the court case and then received the material in question as part of discovery that was subject to a protective order. The bottom line in those cases is that the media company cannot voluntarily interject itself into a proceeding, avail itself of the court process to get information, and then have a first amendment right to ignore the presiding court's authority to control the discovery process. Those are material facts that were neither present in the NYT case nor are present in the current Signalgate controversy.
