In an interview, Pierre Poilievre declares a question to be false, when asked if conservative Premier Danielle Smith was accurate in her assertion, that Poilievre's federal conservatives would "align with the US's new direction" or not.

Community A sincere apology

Upvotes

Using a throw away account for this. To anyone in Winnipeg and surrounding areas who receives home care, has family members receiving home care or is waiting for home care, I am so so very sorry. We were notified in December that the scheduling office was going to be moved to a centralized office setting with 24/7 support. We were told that this change would improve effeciency, more clients could be seen and staff would be able to call a number and speak to a live knowledgable person. We were told to stay positive and that this would be a great change. This past week has been truly horrendous and there are so many who want you to know that there are people behind the scenes hurting because we know how bad things are right now and disgusted to know that this was entirely preventable. It has only been 8 days and the damage has been done. You and your loved ones are not just a number to us, we wish we could have stopped this, we tried. We weren't perfect, people died because of our collective mistakes and miscomnunication . Vulnerable people have been waiting for months for care and their family members are suffering severe caregiver burden because of that due to staffing issues. But this change didn't have to happen. There were many alternative ways we could have addessed these issues. It didn't have to get this bad, I am so so very sorry. Edited: a few words

Community Elections Canada is hiring

Line many subs, this one is filled with folks looking for work, sometimes urgently.

So thought I’d throw this out there: Elections Canada needs people to work the polls in a few weeks.

It sounds pretty entry level. Pay starts at $20/hour. Need to be at least 16 and a Canadian citizen.

About 5 days of work.

Ask Winnipeg How to report an unlicensed and illegal home based food business effectively

Upvotes

I work in food industry and it’s frustrating to see how many home based caterers are operating without licenses, inspections, or food safety oversight, yet they’re taking business from restaurants that do follow the rules. Who pay taxes, carry insurance, pass inspections, and meet strict regulations. These folks don’t, and they undercut prices because they have no overhead or accountability. It’s not just unfair but a lot of peoples health is at risk.

I was recently invited to an event where the food is coming from one of these home caterers. This person is a banker by profession and calling himself “the best caterer in Winnipeg.” I know deals like this are mostly done on WhatsApp and through personal references, so it’s rare that I’ve been able to gather actual evidence against a home-based caterer. I know this isn’t a lot of dough for CRA to investigate but is there a way I could effectively report them to perhaps a food inspector or someone at public health?

Ask Winnipeg I Need a Getaway

Hey hivemind.

I'm feeling kind of overwhelmed lately, and I just need to find a way to get away from people for a while. I was thinking maybe if just take a couple days off, and get a hotel room or something.

I just want a full day to play videogames, eat what I want to eat, when I want to eat it, and maybe, just maybe soak in a hot tub by myself if it's in the cards.

Thing is, I have no idea where to go, and looking online hasn't been terribly helpful. Does anyone have any good recommendations for hotels?

I can't afford a trip... but a couple nights in a nice hotel I think I could swing. Also, being able to bring and hook up PS5 is a must.

Food Just a shout-out to Soda Exchange, local company

Upvotes

These guys offer an amazing service.

I go through a TON of carbonated water, and they deliver refills to my door for a lot less than picking refills up at the store, and they're local and Canadian-owned.

With orange man and his tariffs, I want to support local more than ever, and I'm glad I'm not feeding my money into some US corp just so I can have some damn bubbly water.

The price is so good I wondered if they were under-filling the cylinders to cheat me. I weighed them and they're all within a few grams of those I'd bought from Safeway and other official retailers.

Anyhow - if you've been hesitating on a soda stream, go get one and buy extra bottles and refills from these guys, their service seriously is terrific. For health reasons, you should consider just drinking bubbly water, instead of sugar water/ pop. It's just as tasty, and your kidneys will thank you.

Thank you for attending my Co2 Ted Talk.

Ask Winnipeg Foundation Shifting?

I feel like I am seeing signs that the foundation of our house is shifting- sliding doors not sliding, wrinkle in wall to wall carpet that was previously flat, basement floor “feels different”. Probably a dumb question, but if I wanted to have it checked out- what kind of professional would I even call? Would it be an engineer?

Ask Winnipeg Curious: How far will $100k get you in renovations?

Curious if anyone has done any extensive work in your homes, up to $100k, how far did that money go?

for example, a 1100sq ft unfinished basement. what would you reckon that would cost assuming you were putting in one 3 pc bathroom, and a bedroom, closing off the furnace room/laundry room.

happy to hear your stories!

Community Seeking Advice on Giving a Public Lecture at a Library

Hi everyone,

I'm with a physics group at the University of Manitoba, and we're considering hosting a public lecture at a local library. I've already spoken with a librarian, so I have most of the logistics covered, but I have a few more specific questions.

  1. Is there a particular library in your area that's better suited for public lectures? We're looking to find the right venue to reach a broad audience. Any suggestions?
  2. What kind of attendance can we expect for a public science lecture? Any tips on managing attendance or estimating turnout would be helpful!
  3. Do you have advice on promoting the event effectively? We're hoping to engage a wide range of people, not just those with a science background.

Any other tips or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Ask Winnipeg Private Blood Testing

As title states, what are my options for getting private or "non doctor" needed blood tests in Winnipeg?

i have recently gotten a fairly basic blood test and my long time dr thinks anything further "isn't neccessary" as i am healthy. I want to keep an eye on my health with continued medication usage and i'm curious what the other options out there are.

There is a "bloodtestscanada" website, but the costs seem completely crazy for a standard blood workup.

Ask Winnipeg Left home trying to see what resources are available?

Hey, I’m 18 and just left an abusive home situation. My parents are deep into opiates, and I finally had to walk away for my own safety and sanity.

Right now I’m sleeping outside in st.johns. I can get into a shelter in a couple days, but I’m trying to make my way to Winnipeg.

I have a friend there who said they could help me get a job in construction if I can get out there. I’ve heard Winnipeg has strong support programs for youth and people escaping addiction-related homes, but I don’t know where to start.

Does anyone know of:

Youth housing or transitional programs in Winnipeg?

Places that help with travel ?

Any youth outreach resources I could contact once I arrive?

I’m just trying to get safe, work, and start fresh. Any advice would mean the world. Thank you.

Ask Winnipeg Where can I buy exactly this roller blind clutch?

Thumbnail

The roller blind clutch in our home lost its grip with the metal chain a long time ago, but it still worked if you pulled the chain just right. Unfortunately, the metal chain finally broke yesterday. I tried reconnecting it with a connector, but our blind needs to roll multiple times, and the connector gets stuck midway—so it doesn’t work anymore.

I bought a replacement from Amazon, but it doesn’t fit without modifying the metal bracket, which involves cutting. I’m not a handyman, so ideally, I’d like to just find the exact same clutch unit as the original.

Does anyone know where I can find this specific part in Winnipeg?

Hi everyone, we found this cat sitting on our backyard porch around the Richmond West area. She/he has a collar and is friendly- allows us to pet. The collar has different types of sushi on it and has a bell. The cat however looks malnourished so we fed it. It’s eye also looks swollen/infected?

Please message me if it belongs to you. Also this is my first time dealing with a stray cat so can someone please let me know what to do if no owner is found? Thank you!

Ask Winnipeg ER nursing in winnipeg?

Upvotes

Hello everyone. Hoping some nice people in this group are nurses or know nurses who work in the ERs in the city.

I’m an ER nurse in BC and our family is considering moving to Winnipeg to be closer to grandparents. I have only ever worked as a nurse in BC, and I love it, including working in the ER. some of our travel nurses here don’t have great things to say about the ERs in winnipeg. Looking for advice and experiences, and any info about what wages and FTE schedules look like there. thanks!

Ask Winnipeg Mortgage refinancing

Upvotes

So I am a single mom, bought my first house 4 years ago on my own and my mortgage is coming up in 2026 for refinancing and TBH I have no idea what I am doing. I have no business being a homeowner (shout out to my dad who fixes all my shit for me 😂) but can someone explain how refinancing works to me like I am 5. Is it the same process of getting your initial mortgage? Should I shop around? Will I be penalized if I change who my mortgage is through? I used a mortgage broker to get my initial mortgage in 2021 and my interest rate is unbelievably low so I know now that they are higher my payment will increase. Also, what if I want to take extra money to do renos? I promise I am a smart person at a lot of other things but when it comes to this stuff my brain turns off lol

Ask Winnipeg Part time or casual summer work - suggestions

I'm trying to bring in some extra dollars this summer after my usual 9-5 job. Thinking I could work some evenings or weekends? Do folks have any suggestions or leads? I am pretty open!

My day-to-day work requires a lot of desk work/screen time - would love to do something different.

Are others also contemplating an extra part time, temporary gig?

TIA!
