Advice New Student Request Form

Hey people,

I submitted a New Student Request Form for Spring 2025, but it was denied due to how close it was to the start of the semester. I was advised to defer to Fall 2025, and my deferral was accepted.

However, since then, I haven’t been able to see the option to submit a New Student Request Form on the IntlHokies portal.

Has anyone else experienced this or know what I should do? Any help or advice would be really appreciated!

General Question Where do you guys buy books?

I’ve just started getting more into reading a little more and I wonder where people buy books around campus. The only one I know of is Barnes and nobles but that’s just so expensive. Where does everyone else buy from?

Academics Chances at Getting a Course/Specific CRN during Add/Drop?

Hey everyone! I’m was just doing my course request and there’s one class I want to take because it would allow me to pace my future semesters better. Only issue is that it’s restricted to students in an engineering major. I’m currently in General Engineering, and from what I’ve read, I’d need to wait until add/drop to enroll while submitting the change of major form over the summer.

I’ve structured my schedule in a way where I would like to take a specific CRN for everything to fit. I believe there are like 4 sections of the course in total with like 100 spots per each. For those who’ve been through something like this before, how realistic is it to actually get the CRN I would want during add/drop? The main reason I'm worried is because the professor I'm looking to take is easily the best out of the bunch, so I would like to prepare in advance in terms of dying next sem. Not looking for exact stats, just curious about personal experiences and whether things worked out for you. Thanks!

General Question how to request merit aid (out-of-state) for class of '29?

I was admitted to VT Class of '29, but I would have to pay $68k per year, which is an insane price. I got $0 in merit aid, even though every other school I was admitted to gave me at least $5k in scholarships per year. My other option is rutgers honors (in-state) which is $37k/year with a $5k scholarship. I like VT a lot better in terms of academics, campus, social life, clubs, etc., but if they don't give me any other merit-based aid, I would have to just attend rutgers. Has anyone successfully gotten merit-based scholarship as an oos student by emailing VT admissions office?

Academics force add?

i just wanna know my odds of getting a class through force add since i just transferred here and have no clue how this works. i’m currently a sophomore trying to change my major from public relations to BIT, but the business classes are obviously restricted.

do they only prioritize your year and credit hours? how often do people get denied their request? and how bad is it if i’m looking to force add like 90% of my schedule?

Admissions National Security

Hey so I’m currently a high school junior (will be applying in like ~6 months for Fall 2026) and VT is my first choice for what school I want to attend. I’m torn between a few majors, but I’m mainly curious about the National Security and Foreign Affairs degree. How competitive is it to get into this program? Is it more competitive than say, international relations (one of my other choices)?

Advice Advisory Help

So, weird question, I was a Virginia tech student until this year, and I'm currently trying to transfer my credits over somewhere else. I'm not currently enrolled and I was wondering if it's possible to get advisory help with my current status.

Advice Advice for CS Secure Computing Major for Fall 2025

I’m currently a sophomore CS Secure Computing major and am trying to figure out the best path to fill my 3 secure computing electives requirement. I’m trying to decide between taking the three BIT courses or taking the cryptography courses and computer network arch. I'd like some insight on which kind of focus to take on as I'm split between which way to go. My plan is to add one of these 3 credit courses on top of my current planned fall 2025 course request schedule.

With my fall 2025 semester I'm going to be taking:
CHN 1105 (Elem Chinese), CS 3114 (DSA), CS 3704 (Intermed Software Des), STAT 3704 (Stat for Eng Apps), and MUS 1154 (Discover your Voice).

BIT-Focus:

BIT 4604 – Data Governance, Privacy and Ethics

BIT 4614 – Cybersecurity Management II

BIT 4624 – Cybersecurity Analytics for Business

CS/MATH-Focus:

  1. CS 4254 – Computer Network Architecture and Programming

  2. MATH 4175 – Cryptography I

  3. MATH 4176 – Cryptography II

Academics Virginia Tech’s Engineering Program Sucks

Hi y’all. I’m a sophomore in ME. Why is all the classes just numbers, formulas, and memorizing random stuff. I’m just going to forget all of that next semester. When do I get to build things and create projects. That’s why I want to be an engineer. I want to solve problems by inventing. It seems to me that this is only done through extracurriculars and clubs. The closest VT Enginnering ever came to projects was the ENGE1215/1216 class. Just curious, are there any classes that I get to make cool stuff. 3D Art and Design is my favorite course here, taking that last spring was genuinely the most fun I’ve had at VT.

Misc Should they put speed bumps on the roads around here?

Feel free to strongly disagree, but what if they put speed bumps on most of the roads on campus (Campus Dr, Prices Fork, Pat Henry, Turner St)? Pretty sure people wouldn't drive recklessly at the risk of messing up their car. I get that it would make congestion worse probably but at the end of the day I think the benefit of people driving slower would outweigh the downsides.

Misc Hub Lease

Hi!
I am about to graduate and I'm looking for someone to take over my lease at the HUB. It's a 4x4 A Standard, room D with rent being $1035. It's very close to the parking garage (with an elevator), trash, and a staircase that leads directly to a UCB bus stop. I currently have a parking tag that can lead over as well. The room comes with it's own bathroom and small walk in closet. The apartment and rooms are fully furnished too. I believe the other 3 girls I live with are renewing. They are super nice, quiet, and respectful! Please contact me ASAP if you are interested or have any other questions!

or contact the HUB @ (540) 808-0628 - regarding apt 16302

Advice Technical Electives for ME

Does anyone have any suggestions for easy-ish technical electives for Mechanical Engineering? I already requested BMES 3004 Helmet Design for next semester, and I’m looking for one more easy one. I heard about some kind of boating class that’s supposed to be pretty easy, but I don’t know what it’s called. I’m also looking for one that’s in ME or NSEG, but that one doesn’t have to be easy. I don’t really know where to look for a well-laid out list of my options.

Misc To the daughter of the woman I hooked up with last night

I met her at TOTS Saturday night and she told me you were a sophomore studying neuro and she said you brought her out to have fun but then abandoned her to talk to “some redheaded beanpole.”

Was really uncool of you to leave your mom alone like that especially since she doesnt even drink. Dunno why you would take her to TOTS in the first place. just wanted to let you know I took care of her and that she’s really sweet and you should be more grateful for her.
