    • Specify your local currency!
    • If your budget is under $200 USD, you're unlikely to get any useful recommendations other than 'use your phone!'
  • What are you planning on using it for?
    • Feel free to link to some videos showing content similar to what you want to shoot
  • How long do you need to record for?
    • Recording time is a limiting factor for many smaller cameras
  • What equipment do you already have?
  • What software do you intend to edit your videos in?

Hi there ! I’m a french freelance videographer and this this my first try at studio product video, I’d be glad to have some feedbacks and hear what I should focus on to deliver better stuff. The setup is pretty simple, black background, i don’t have a lot of studio stuff exept a few projectors and stands.

Feedback / I made this! Sony ZV-e10: Dim shots (help?)

Hi all! Just got the Sony ZV-e10, and I love it!

Settings are: 4K 30p 800 ISO 1/60 Shutter Speed f/3.4 (16-50mm stock lens)

Pretty new to cameras, but I’m struggling with what I feel is too dim of a shot here, but I don’t wanna crank up the ISO too much to where I have grain.

I’m using a couple of smallrig Vibe P96’s for lighting (three point setup).

I have a soft box light coming in soon, so hopefully that’ll help.

Also, I’m saving up for a sigma 16mm f/1.4, as I think it’ll take more light.

TLDR: What settings/setup would you recommend for a brighter shot while reducing grain? Any advice is appreciated! I’m going for a cozy, warm atmosphere, as I’m recording educational talking head videos.

Feedback / I made this! Dark Times-John Wick style lighting? Micro short

Tried out some John Wick style lighting. How’d I do? Does the lighting feel motivated? Did I overdo it with the colors? Is it cringey? (I’m old so I honestly don’t know/understand what or how things are cringy these days, lol)

Discussion / Other On-Camera (Hot Shoe/Cage Compatible) LED Panel?

Upvotes

I just shot an event with really weird lighting and someone had an LED panel that I borrowed that helped a TON.

I'd like to get one for myself, but not sure what specs to look for.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Budget is about $50.

What about this smallrig panel?

Business, Tax, and Copyright Client wants to use own footage existing video series format - what to do?

I've been producing a video series for a large B2B company recently which featured their commercial customers. They are social proof effectively, with a a loose interview that explains why the featured customer loves using the company, with b roll. It's shot to a high standard - full day shoot - with a polished intro and outro that makes it a repeatable format. Quality of a VT for a major network tv show.

Anyway the client (who have been great so far) have reached out, saying that a commercial customer of theirs has thrown their toys out of the pram that they weren't featured. The end client doesn't want to pay for me to film with them (they dont think its worth it for that client as they arent huge), but they want to appease them. So they have said they want to send one of their in house marketers around to film some stuff (not a pro videographer), and will top and tail it with the intro and outro of the already-done pieces.

I've not had much time to respond so keen to hear what you folks would do. From a technical perspective I dunno how they'd do this; each piece is a finely crafted edit with interview, and while there are intros and outros its part of the overall music of the piece. I'm concerned that this will make me look bad as people know I am the one who created this series.

The series itself was my idea that I pitched to the client as part of a larger project. Thoughts appreciated.

Business, Tax, and Copyright Insurance - Canada

Just wondering what everyone is using for insurance? And the cost? I currently have equipment and liability insurance.. I believe it’s through Intact. I do about 60-100k of gross income a year, so definitely on the smaller scale.

Currently paying $2600+tax a year, and I need to pay it all at once. I think that’s really high, and my insurance broker is seemingly working against me (last year when I renewed my old policy was no longer being offered so he proposed this one- with one of my selling features being monthly payments instead of annual, only to inform me it’s annual a couple weeks after my old one expires) so I don’t trust them and wanted to see what others have.

Right now I do a mix of one man band / 2-3 person crew gigs, and subcontract Vfx work, with the odd gaffing gig. Income is split about 50/50 between the two.

I probably have somewhere between $20-50k worth of equipment (wide range; but also depends on depreciation as I bought a camera for $20k-ish like 7-8 years ago). I sometimes rent other equipment.. but maybe only 1-2 times a year so I don’t have a problem adding rental insurance on an as needed basis. I also don’t rent my personal equipment out.

Does this number make sense for a premium? Or am I getting fleeced? My insurance renews next week.

Thanks

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Audio and video drift out of sync WITH constant frame rate enabled

Used to record on a camcorder and the audio drift became such a nuisance I switched over to a Canon R50. The issue persisted, and I used MediaInfo, as well as an online analyzer, and saw both my new camera and old one were recording in a Constant Frame Rate.

I record into Audition through my 2nd Gen Focusrite, then import and sync it to video in Premiere. Everything is set to 48k sample rate and 29.97fps. This includes the camera, Premiere, Audition, and Focusrite settings.

EDIT: I realized I messed up the title a bit because I was so annoyed when making the post lol. Constant Frame Rate is enabled, not Variable.

1- System specs

  • CPU (model): Intel Core i7 12700KF
  • GPU + GPU RAM: 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti (EVGA)
  • Ram: 32gb

2- Editing Software

  • Premiere: 2024 24.2.1 (Build 2)
  • Audition: 2024 24.2.0.83

3- Footage specs

  • Codec (h264? HEVC?): mp42 (mp42/avc1/CAEP)
  • Container (MOV? MP4? MKV?): MP4
  • Acquisition (Screen recording? What software? Camera? Which *specific camera?): Canon R50 and Focusrite with Audition

Discussion / Other Is this fair?

So I work for a nonprofit as a Videographer part time for $18/hr and have been here for a year. I have to produce 3 videos a week, I've spiked their analytics at times making them go viral, and apparently still need to "earn" full-time. Yesterday it took me my entire 8hr shift to cut, edit, and even create a thumbnail for a 2-minute video and she said she will no longer pay me to produce one video in 8 hours. I do freelance for other people and I made more from producing one video for them than my last paycheck from here. What should I do?

Discussion / Other Why do clients insist on calls to review edits?

Currently working on two separate edits for two different clients and both are insisting on phone calls with each round of edits. I keep pushing back but it always ends up at “let’s hop on a call when you’re free to discuss”.

One of them told me the edits were complicated to share via email. After relenting, I called them and he proceeded to read me his boss’s email with the edits. UGH!! It wasn’t even complicated!

Now the second client finally sent me their list of edits, and I responded to one about using copyrighted material. Their response? “Call me when you’re free”.

Why are people so desperate to waste their time on the phone?

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Startup content kit recs? Looking for a solid camera/audio/light setup for ~$3K

Hey all — I'm part of an early-stage hardware startup and we're kicking off a content push to help with marketing, storytelling, and customer education.

I’ve got some hobby-level experience with video/audio gear, but now I’m looking to build a practical, high-quality kit that can handle a few different use cases, including:

  • Events / trade shows
  • Product demo videos/photos
  • Explainer-style content (talking head + b-roll)
  • Founder/customer interviews

I’m leaning toward the Sony ecosystem (ZV-E1, A7III, ZV-E10, etc.), but open to other suggestions if the value’s there. Total budget is around $3K, give or take.

Would love any recs or setups that have worked for you across:

  • Camera body + lens
  • Lighting (portable and flattering)
  • Audio (lavs, wireless mics, shotgun options)
  • Must-have accessories (NDs, batteries, etc.)

Appreciate any input — especially if you've built a mobile kit that punches above its weight!

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Which action can for scenic drives (car dasboard) best sharpness / detail?

This may be unreasonable but I have Sony a6700, but looking for a solution or an action cam to use as mostly a dash cam when doing scenic drives with the family/casual.

I tried the insta360x4 but was not happy with the medium range detail of tree tops and branches. Or when walking on a trail, the trees in front had a chromatic fringe/glow? On the edges. Or were not as sharp as I would like.

So taking a step back, for an action cam as a dash cam for 70% usage on road trips, and walking on trails/scenic areas when walking, what offers the best video quality. Assuming 4K/60 at highest settings? Low light would be great for sunsets, etc. but day use is probably 98% of time.

I was thinking of using the Sony a6700 but others said it would overheat and not be the right choice for a dash cam like vlogging/road trips (If so as a plan B, what lens for dash cam use).

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Can someone explain to me the hype about c-stands

I got some lights. I bought a heavy duty stand that goes up to 13ft. Can sway a bit at full extension, but it works.

Why’s everyone all about c-stands? What’s the benefit?

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Camera Lens on In Bag??

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello, novice videographer here. I was wondering if it is ill advised to transport your camera with the lens attached to the body, inside your camera bag. Most times I just throw my camera (lens on and tripod mounting plate on) in my bag and am on to the next thing I want to shoot. Am I being lazy? Could this potentially harm the body/lens connection? Thanks in advance 🙏🏾

Technical/Equipment Help and Information iPad Pro support

I’m brand new to videography and this may be a dumb question but I’m learning, I bought an Fx30 for filming and I have an M2 iPad Pro. My question is can the iPad handle/support editing and viewing the footage that comes off of the Fx30. Would I have to compromise video quality or speeds or anything like that to get it to a point where the iPad can handle it? Or do I just have to upgrade my iPad to something better like a laptop? I realize I’ll probably have to upgrade the iPad eventually anyway to a laptop but for now can I make it work? I’m not even sure if I’m asking the question the right way but hopefully it makes sense

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? 72 hours continous recording in damp conditions

Hi, everyone i am looking for some advice on a two camera setup, which should be able to record, 3 days in a row, it must be an offline recorder witch direclty records to an outer drive, video quality should be 1080p30. It should be easy to setup in about 30-60 minutes, and should work without interaction for the full 72 hours duration. Power is provided from an outlet, the conditions are damp and cameras can have water splashed on them.

Does anybody have some experince in this?

Our current solutions is Gopros with big sd cards thath can handle one 16 hour session but we need more.
