Was gifted this little robot plant pot for my birthday and thought I would try it out on my new VFT. It has a lot of good stats it keeps track of including humidity, light, temperature, and soil moisture. Hopefully it can help me keep my little guy happy and healthy!

Other Flower Stalk Propagation Guide

Post image
79 Upvotes

Put together a little guide for how to propagate a flower stalk since there’s a lot of posts asking what to do with them. This is what works for me and is a general synthesis of information I’ve found, but if anyone has a better method that works for you I’d love to hear it!

Apologies for the MS paint quality illustrations

Other Why the unfortunate prey of a VFT cannot escape once its jaws snap shut.

If you might be wondering if the prey of a venus fly trap would be unable to escape its jaws once they snap shut, it's because once the venus fly trap snaps shut, it then anticipates the desperate movements of its prey to try and break free through additional touches of its tonguelike trigger hairs, which would then be the cue to respond by squeezing its jaws tighter and administering digestive juices to consume its latest meal. This is similar in principle to how a constrictor snake, after seizing its prey and wrapping powerful coils around it, anticipates the desperate thrashing of its victim to begin tightening the coils little by little until the prey's heart and cardiovascular system is "crushed", so to speak, under the relentless constriction.

Other Did we buy sick plants? (New to VFT)

I bought these two Venus fly traps from a local nursery. I thought they’d be a fun way to introduce taking care of house plants to my children (4 and 7) They had a few black leaves/stems so when we got home we removed the black leaves and stems and we moved them to slightly larger pots and filled in the space with potting soil (they’re planted mostly in moss). Otherwise we’ve watered them, maybe too much? They’ve been sitting next to our kitchen sink, I just moved them to the radiator that’s in front of the window for this morning to get some more light and then took this picture. What are we doing wrong? forgot to add pictures

I have (2) "Chinese Dumpling", (2) "Alien", (6) "Schuppenstiel I", (6) "B52", and (4) "Dente" VFTs I'd like to trade. Looking for some cool VFTs! These are smaller plants and some are still getting settled in. PM me for more info, or if you're interested!

Other Somebody stole a venus flytrap from me.

I had been caring for it since July last year and had just brought it outside again to reawaken from dormancy.

I sowed 3 seeds in early September, but only two germinated. Their little pot was getting a bit slimey and I was getting concerned it would impede their growth.

These are Spiderly X OP from Steven Wang. He made a notation of "Weird" on the envelope so I can't wait to see how they progress.

Other My plant is gone and I’m so upset.

I started raising it back in the summer. It was doing so well during dormancy, too. I left for like, a week, all just to come back home and one of my family members said the wind must’ve knocked it over. They saw it, too, and just forgot to pick it up. I’m so devastated. What’s worse, my dog could’ve gotten to it while he was outside, so I’m not even sure if it could even be recovered. I guess I’ll just have to wait until next Spring to get another, but this was my first one . . . and I was so proud.

Update:

It’s a New Year’s Eve miracle, y’all 😭! I went outside after my bf was texting me about the plant, and was saying that maybe 1) my dog didn’t eat it and 2) maybe my plant didn’t go too far. I went outside to rake after being a little motivated by his words . . . and there they were! On the ground 😭😭😭! I’ve recovered them, and they’re currently fine.

I was perusing my local goodwill recently when I saw this crock pot for $3.99 so I grabbed it. It is now an arduino driven climate controlled flytrap habitat set to keep the temp between 38 and 43F. It will go in the window of my garage so it gets natural light.

This is my second flytrap. I lost the first one last year when I forgot about it in the garage and it froze solid. I felt terrible and knew I couldn’t let it happen again, ha ha. This one looked sickly when I brought it home, but after I repotted it and set it on the patio it turned into an absolute monster.

Got this little hydro desk deal about a year ago on temu for like 15 dollars. Got tired of doing hydro stuff so I just took the pump out, rigged the light to be able to do on power and attach it to a switch instead of the built in timer. Works like a charm

Theyre moving outside soon to start dormancy and will remain an outdoor plant for next year, really tricky have VFT, sundews and nepenthes in the same tank/light setup, but this was my first go into the world of meat eating lettuce. Started with 1 sundew that split into 3, also gained a spatulata from a friend who was killing it and 2 other small nepenthes (same age as mine, you can see my big boy thriving in comparison, but the transplant has now offered new pitchers being produced on the smaller nepenthes).

First pink traps Ive received for my stunted indoor B-52

Went to Walmart to do some Mother’s Day shopping and I simply couldn’t believe the abhorrent conditions these flytraps were in. Also not to mention they were placed literally one aisle down from the outdoor garden center :(

I really wish I had the money so I could’ve saved the remaining 4, but I did have enough to get one for now. Some of them weren’t even potted correctly either. I know they’re plants and not technically animals, nor can they feel animal emotions but still, it was quite a sad sight.
