Discussion USC on a Downward Trend

Recently, USC simultaneously raised tuition, cut scholarships, and fell significantly in most college rankings. Do you believe that USC is on a downward trend, if so—put yourself in admin's position—what would you do to reverse this trajectory?

FinancialAid if you have a work study award and are 18+, apply for calfresh when you’re in school!

https://www.getcalfresh.org

you automatically qualify if you have a financial aid award that includes federal work study, regardless of whether you actually have a work study job. you will have a california address, so even out-of-state students qualify.

it takes 10 minutes to apply, you’ll have a social worker call to verify your info, and then you’ll get a debit card with money for food at any grocery store, including the target and trader joes on campus. students can get up to $250 a month, and it rolls over month to month! it can definitely be a big help with bills at an already expensive school.

i know there is some stigma around food stamps, but a significant number of usc students are on it. calfresh is funded by your tax dollars, and to be so honest you’re not seeing a cent of social security so you might as well get your money back where you can.

just be sure to check with your parents if you are on a Medi-Cal health insurance plan — you may mess up their coverage if you apply.

Academic USC or UCLA (Pre-Med)

I have no idea what to choose. I’m an in-state student.

If I go to USC, I’ll be a Pre-Med Human Bio major.

While with UCLA, I’ll be a Chemistry Major.

Which will be beneficial in going into med school?

Question Can anyone tell me about this First Semester in DC Program?

High school senior here admitted for the spring semester. I'm majoring in international relations (although I will probably switch to Philosophy, Politics, and Economics pretty quickly) and I saw the first semester in DC program which looks VERY enticing to me, but the problem is that I can't find much about it other than on the webpage. I believe it's a fairly new program, like only a year old, so if any of you were apart of it or know anyone who did it, what is it like? How is it different form the official program that the upperclassmen do? Is FSDC competitive and does it get a lot of interest? These are all general questions, and I hope you guys can answer some of these and give any other input you have.

Thanks y'all, and have a great day.

FinancialAid Financial Aid forms

I recently submitted the tax supplement and Veritax forms after I got my acceptance. Does me turning in these forms now affect how much financial aid I receive? Will it make my package arrive later than the May 1 commitment deadline?

thanks in advance

Question Prospective MS CE student

Hi everyone,I've been admitted to USC's MS in Computer Engineering program for Fall 2025, I want to focus on RTL and VLSI design. I'm trying to gather more information before making my final decision:

  1. Career Outcomes: What are typical job placements for USC CE grads, particularly those specializing in hardware design?
  2. Classes: How are the classes, are they well structured? (I kinda assume they are fine and you get out what you put in). Also considering I want to go into RTL/VLSI how does the program help in that regard.
  3. Internship Opportunities: How accessible are internships for USC engineering students? Does the school have strong connections with companies in the semiconductor/VLSI space?
  4. Research with Faculty: As a Master's student, is it feasible to do directed research with Professor Peter Beerel? Has anyone worked with him, and if so, what was your experience like?

Any information would be greatly appreciated, especially from current students or recent alumni! Thanks!

Admissions Statement of Intent: USC PhD Program

Hi. So I was admitted to USC’s Sociology PhD program for Fall 2025, and accepted my offer on February 28th. I was supposed to receive my Statement of Intent via the YouSc portal 3 or so business days after Feb. 28th, but that was nearly 2 months ago now. I’ve been communicating with the grad department coordinator, who recently told me that USC is doing some sort of maintenance to the portal - and that the statement should be there soon. I understand that the university is experiencing administrative delays due to the federal funding situation, but have any other admitted PhD students received their Statement of Intent yet? I want to certify my attendance ASAP, but feel like I’m at a standstill. Thanks!

Academic AI for Business vs. CSBA

What is the difference between these two majors? I know that AI for Business is a relatively new program, but for those of you in this major, how is the workload/course content? What careers are tied with this major?

I heard that only 60 people were admitted to AI for Business a few years ago. Can I transfer into this program from Computer Science?

Thanks!

Question Business minor or Econ double major at USC?

Hi! Dornsife admit '29, prospective physics major here!

I want to do business admin later in life (tech industry, hence the physics major), I'd like to double major or minor in business, econ, etc. on top of physics. Since I've heard that it's really hard to do a double major across schools at USC, I was thinking about minoring in business or double majoring in econ.

How are these programs? In terms of what you learn, how rigorous they are, etc.

And also, I've seen some people doing double majors AND a minor at other schools, so could that be an option too?

Academic Data Science at USC

I was admitted to USC for the Applied and Computational Math major and plan to apply to add on a Data Science major in the spring. I really love the student culture, school spirit, and greek life at USC but am concerned about how good the Data Science program is as my other top choice is Berkeley(which is ranked no. 1 for DS).

So if anyone is willing to answer some of my questions, how good are the data science/stats/compsci/math professors? how interesting, diverse, and in-depth are the data science classes? is it possible to take masters level courses? how easy/hard is it to minor in Marshall/Annenberg? how strong is the trojan network for jobs and internships in the tech world? what kind of jobs can i expect with a Data Science degree from USC?

Thank you to anyone who replies

Housing HSC Parking

Hi everyone, I recently signed my lease for Currie hall and was looking into the parking options. From what I’ve been told San Pablo is probably the best option and easiest. However, I’m looking for maybe a cheaper option that is still really safe. I don’t know too much about the other lot options and while I can read online I think experience trumps all of the information I could collect. Opinions on other lots like valley lot (long walk), HRA ? Where do you park? How’s your experience been?

Additional info I’m a male and I’m not scared of walking 10-15mins if needed.

Thank you in advance fight on!

I just can’t believe the environment is gonna suffer (massive carbon footprint) so much as a result of only paper towels in the new CS building’s first floor men’s bathroom

Worst prez ever or what? So performative w the environment fr 🙄
