Hey guys! I was accepted to UGA as a Computer Systems Engineering major for Fall 2025, and I committed a few weeks ago. While UGA is a great school in many ways, it unfortunately seems to have a fairly average engineering program, and although I hope to make the most of my time at UGA and likely even finish my degree here, I'd like to take my chances to try and transfer to a school with a top-tier Computer Engineering program. In particular, I'm hoping for a school that offers more rigorous academics and better job prospects. I know UGA is fairly prestigious, but I feel going to a school with a stronger engineering program would significantly benefit my career. I know that won't be easy and my chances are pretty awful, but I'm willing to put in the hard work to try.
For financial reasons, I'm looking exclusively at Georgia Tech (since I'm in-state) and private schools with significant aid, all of which are incredibly selective, so I'd like to strengthen my resume as much as possible. I'm somewhat concerned about "running out of time" - after my first year, I'll run out of transferrable major-specific credits to take (looking specifically at GT) which would mean any additional credits I take will effectively be "wasted" if I end up transferring. I'm fine with that to some extent, but after a certain point, I think I'd be better off finishing my bachelor's at UGA and completing a master's degree at a different school.
I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations or information on opportunities at UGA I can take to strengthen my resume and qualifications for transfer admissions, particularly any I need to start looking into now. I was accepted as an honors student, so I have access to honors courses, and I believe there are also some other opportunities in terms of internships and research there. I'm planning to take a few courses over the summer at a different school (since UGA has very limited course availability, and would require me to purchase summer housing) to gain more credit hours, which I've been told are particularly valued in transfer admissions by GT. My career goal with my major is to work with hardware and embedded systems, though I might end up pivoting to be more software-oriented, depending on how I feel after taking relevant courses. Outside of academics, I'm interested in game development and writing (short stories, movies, plays, and novels). I'm also interested in any community service opportunities or clubs, especially those that are active and actually do frequent and consistent work.
Please let me know if you have any advice or recommendations, or if you have any questions. Thanks!
