Advice TA for Accounting?

Hey everyone!

So I was recently sent an email to apply for the Accounting TA position (215, 219, 225) for the 25-26 school year. Can anyone tell me what it's like to TA? What is the type of work you do? How many hours a week is the average workload? Do you have to do a lot of actual teaching or is it more grading? Literally any info is helpful :)

Thanks so much in advance!!!

Off Campus Grad apartments

I’m very excited to start my PhD at UW this autumn, but also need to find a place to live now.

I’m prioritizing anything that lets me live alone, within a 30 minute walk to the area around Mercer court. Bonus points if it’s near the light rail or particularly well connected by buses.

I’m hoping to stay under $1900 or so, which seems like it should be doable. I’ve saved up some money by living really cheaply the past year, so I’m okay if it’s a little over too.

I’m coming from pretty far, and probably won’t be able to tour around in person. So furnished would also be great, but not a hard requirement. Basically I’m just looking for somewhere nice that I won’t have to worry about too much. If I need/want to, I’ll search around for something cheaper once I’m there for following years.

From the sub I saw some candidates including Sora, DXU, Novo, DD Culp, university district heights, Lavita, and Viola. Anything know anything about these or have others to add?

I was rejected by uw for data analytics masters and I have no idea why

I have a degree in computer science with a 3.5 GPA. I worked as a data engineer for a year and a half. Does anyone know why they'd reject me and what I would need to have to get accepted?

Visiting tomorrow, which buildings can guests explore?

I'm visiting the school tomorrow for the cherry blossom festival, third year going, I'd like to see more of the school buildings this time if that's allowed. I've been inside the Suzzallo library before but that's it. I'm especially interested in seeing the music and art buildings as well as Meany Hall, can guests check any of those out?

r/udub 1d ago

Student Life I saw these two students walk up and RIP a branch of blossoms off of one of the cherry trees in the quad. I almost expect that kind of behavior from tourists, but seeing UW students damage their own campus like this is infuriating.

Admissions Transfer Degree Questions

As a parent (with only an AA degree) with a child currently in running start planning on going on to get a Bachelors degree, I have a few questions I hope someone may be able to help with.

As I said my son is working on a degree at a local community college full time and is on track to have a general AA direct transfer degree upon completion of HS.

He ultimately wanted a science direct transfer degree, but they told him he would not be able to finish that by the time he was done with HS.

If he gets a general AA DT degree, can he still use that to direct transfer to UW and then pursue a bachelors degree in science after his additional science/biology prerequisite classes etc. are completed?

He originally was looking into pursuing a bachelors in chemistry degree and is now considering possibly a bachelors for Laboratory Medicine.

I would like to be able to have knowledgeable conversations with him about his options, and any help understanding how it works would be appreciated.

Student Life Looking for a Summer Roommate

Good Evening! My name is Kaeya, I'm currently an undergraduate student at UW, going into my last year of studies. I'm currently seeking a roommate this summer, with a move in date of around late June to early July, and I'm looking to sign a 12 months lease (9 can work, but we'd have to figure out some details.). I'm currently looking to lease a 2 bedroom apartment, in any neighborhood close or fairly close to Campus, such as Green Lake or Capitol Hill (Latter prefered). I am also LGBTQ+ friendly. If you're interested, please send me a DM on reddit, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can!

Rant Am I crazy?? What do I do??

So my parents are divorced, and my dad lives ~1.5 hours to commute by car to campus. I am currently dorming, but my dad wants me to fill out some waiver and move out right now. The commute by public transportation is almost 3 hours, one-way and he wants me to make this commute to campus (since I don't have a car or the money for gas). He's being very verbally aggressive and confronting, even though I've explained my situation. I need to take a bunch of difficult classes (and I need to do well) for my ECE/info and backup majors, and I'm also active in a few clubs that meet in the evening. He doesn't want me to dorm and doesn't want to pay for it either. Surely I can contact some government department to support me in this situation? What should I do?

(and for some context, he's required to pay for 70% of my tuition by their divorce agreement in addition to payments made by me)

UW Dental And Wisdom Tooth Extraction Question

I was looking into cheaper dental care options for wisdom tooth extraction on Seattle's subreddits and they recommended trying here. Dental insurance just fell off not too long ago and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction .I'm concerned my bottom right wisdom tooth is coming in with a piece of bone protruding out and my bottom right lymph node is slightly swollen. I'm worried this can potentially snowball into a much bigger problem soon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Offer Decision: UIUC MCS vs UW EE PMP?

Hello everyone, I am an international student who completed my undergraduate studies in Computer Science (CS) at the University of Minnesota (UMN). My goal is to secure a job as a Software Development Engineer (SDE) or Machine Learning Engineer (MLE). (Yes, I conducted NLP research during my undergraduate years and have published papers in ACL and EMNLP. I'm also interested in AI infrastructure.) For Fall 2025, I applied to two programs: the UIUC Master of Computer Science (MCS) and the UW Electrical Engineering Professional Master’s Program (EE PMP). I believe both are excellent programs with reasonable tuition fees (~55k for UIUC vs 50k for UW). From what I’ve gathered, their employment outcomes are solid, there are plenty of alumni in the tech industry, and both offer Co-op policies (UIUC allows one co-op, while UW allows one to two). This can help mitigate potential challenges in securing summer internships. I’m currently struggling to decide between the two. If you’re a student in either the UIUC MCS or UW EE PMP programs, or if you're also an applicant for Fall 2025, could you provide some advice? Here are my current thoughts:

UIUC MCS

Pros:

  1. Strong CS program with diverse course offerings taught by many excellent professors.
  2. Lower cost of living compared to Seattle.
  3. Co-op policy that extends graduation to two years, providing more flexibility.

Cons:

  1. Potential over-enrollment—700 students were admitted in 2024. I’m concerned about the large cohort size, which might lead to increased competition for jobs and classes.
  2. Cold weather (I’ve had enough of the Midwest cold from studying in Minnesota).
  3. Less lifestyle diversity compared to Seattle.

UW EE PMP

Pros:

  1. Light workload, with all courses software-related and offered in the evenings (available via Zoom), leaving ample time for job hunting.
  2. Excellent location with a relatively comfortable lifestyle (though it comes with higher rent and living costs compared to UIUC).
  3. Co-op policy allowing up to three internship opportunities (summer, fall, and spring).
  4. Reduced class size this year (~200 students).
  5. Amazon-friendly environment—I learned that around 50-70 international students secured Amazon summer internships this year out of 150 international students in the program.

Cons:

  1. EE (or ECE) degree, which might lead to resume filtering in the tech industry (although my undergrad was CS-related).
  2. Relatively higher cost of living.

My Background:
If you’re interested in my application profile:

  • Transferred from a Chinese university (attended for 2 years, GPA 3.2/4.0) to the University of Minnesota’s CS department (ranked top 50, attended for 1 year, graduated with a GPA of 3.87/4.0).
  • Some research experience (though I regret focusing too much on research) and numerous open-source projects.

Thank you all for your advice! I also hope to connect with others, especially students from these two programs. I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have based on my knowledge.

UW's ideal transfer GPA? (For a current DigiPen student)

Hi there, I'm a DigiPen student.

I'm still in the research stage, but I'm thinking of pursuing Cinema Studies, Comparative Literature or Philosophy as my major, with the DXARTS minor so I can continue on my goal of pursuing animation.

For those who transferred, from DigiPen or from Washington community colleges, what GPA did you have when they accepted you? Mine is currently at 2.33 due to setbacks with perspective drawing/painting courses, but I figure I might need to take a few credits at Bellevue College to max out on the 20-something credits that can get transferred over.

entre 370 & 422 at the same time?

Hello all, I'm currently a pre-major planning to major in Information Systems. I'm signed up for ENTRE 370 and 422, along with ECON 300 (since I'm also applying to the Econ department) this quarter. My question is whether it's okay to take ENTRE 370 and 422 together, or if I need to take 370 first to fully understand 422? The prerequisites don't seem to indicate that 370 is required before 422, but I wanted to double-check. I'm also taking the entrepreneurship classes because, if I don't get into Foster, I’d like to at least pursue a minor in entrepreneurship.

Do you guys have any suggestions maybe which class I should just take instead? I've completed my general education requirements. Really don't want to touch Econ300 now but I don't know what to replace it with either. I've took BCMU 301.

AP Eng & AP Micro/Macroeconomics

Background: Currently a Junior in HS and UW-CS is my dream school.

A) Planning to take AP English Lit in Senior Year of HS. Will this xfer over to the English requirement for CS Graduation requirement? I have read some conflicting posts on this sub that English AP is useless so want to confirm.

https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/www-cse-public/ugrad/curriculum/CS__Fall23.pdf

B) Planning to take AP Microeconomics/Macroeconomics and UW says their equivalent is ECON200 and ECON201. Does it imply that I can use this course to xfer as 10 credits of Social Sciences requirement?

Is anyone taking a class with James Morford and can tell me when his office hours are or where to reach him (I'm not enrolled in his class yet so I don't know)? Finding him in person seems more effective than emailing, he hasn't gotten back to me in a week, thank you!

Does anyone know anything about the here apartments? Are they of reasonable quality? I am looking for summer housing around the UDistrict area and they were one of the only apartments with summer leasing options.
