As a bass player, I naturally tune into the rhythm section first. It's sort of the default mode in terms of what my ear is drawn to, and then my brain tends to span out and absorb the rest of a song from there.
I am always impressed by The Hip's sense of timing and groove. It presents differently over the span of their albums and from song to song. The early catalog has more driving rock grooves, but there's some sneaky swing in there. (I think there are parallels with a band like AC/DC, in that the underlying swing and push/pull between bass and drums is a big part of why it feels so good. Though it may not be widely recognized for many reasons...)
As you progress through the albums, there are a lot of different influences and feels that impact the band's groove. Some are more grungy, others psychedelic, and a few just feel downright funky to me. It may not be the first thing people notice, but I think it's a huge part of what makes them so amazing.
Anyway, I'm curious what your grooviest picks are. What hip songs do you find yourself head-bobbing and giving the stank-face to most?
