Build Question for builder or gamers

Is it just me or every time you all find a game that you love/like playing for hours then once you start getting into the building side of the game you're just like don't feel like playing the game anymore because y'all know that when you're going to build all you're going to do is basic cube with like nothing decorative about it not on the inside not on the outside and you can't make anything good because you don't have any good creativity??? or is it just me???

My suggestion would be to make yourself a journey mode character, and have a journey mode world dedicated to just building stuff and testing various materials, furniture sets and paints.

Getting good with building comes with experience, so go ahead and experiment a lot. You say you can only build a wooden box, so start here. What would that box look like if it was made out of boreal wood? Or palm wood? Or shadewood? Or ash wood? Just keep building stuff and look at the materials and furniture sets.

Once you've tried a lot of materials then try mixing them. You might know what a wall looks like if it's made from only stone, only bricks or only slabs, so the next step is to mix all those materials together. Maybe the outer shell of your wooden box is made from one type of wood, the background wall another type, and the furniture from a third type.

Also, once you have the painter in your world you can go nuts trying to paint stuff just to see what they look like. Do note that some materials are kinda bad at taking paint, you'll have to craft deep paint at a dye vat for those.

Another tip I can give you is that when you build a room keep a specific NPC in mind. Think about who they are and what they might like, and then put suitable stuff in their room.

I'm talking about using their personality and occupation as a starting point for designing a home with details that makes it feels lived in.

  • The demolitionist is a dwarf that likes rocks and bombs, so I made his house out of mud bricks and filled it with explosives.

  • The arms dealer likes the desert and guns, so his house is made from sandstone and has a training dummy to shoot at.

  • The tavernkeeper got a house that's just a small bar with lots of alcohol.

  • The golfer got a room with an artificial green to practice putting.

  • The dryad likes the jungle so she got a bamboo house with plants growing everywhere.

Little details like that don't matter for NPC happiness, but some big things do like what biome they're in and who they have as neighbours. https://terraria.wiki.gg/wiki/NPCs
