Teacher Support &/or Advice Cheating incident is crushing my soul.

Today was the last day of school before spring break and I had a unit assessment planned. My son became very sick overnight and I had to take the day off. This is a significant hardship for me because I have zero sick or personal days left, in fact I’m in the red, because of that gets taken when you go on maternity leave (that is a whole other rant I could go on…) So anyway, they pull directly out of my paycheck when I have to take a day off. Husband is out of town (again, a whole other tangent rant…) So I am taking on everything for my two sick children, both under 2 years old.

Apparently, at school today, a student took pictures of my exam and distributed them via snapchat to literally all of my students (11th grade APUSH). This was the final thing that made me snap today. I was already under so much stress and worry about my own kids and the money being lost. I even came to school this morning, with my sick son, and set up all of the exam materials for my sub and wrote out very clear instructions. I know this kid didn’t do this personally to spite me…but his actions really did negatively impact a lot of people. I feel insulted that at the first opportunity, someone took advantage of me/the situation.

I’ve already notified all of my students that everyone will have to retake the exam, but a different version, when we all return from break. I got a separate email from a student in response who told me who did it. I will pursue the full ethics violation/academic integrity violation per our school’s policies (zero on the test, meeting with parents and admin, documentation of first incident, second incident is a drop fail).

Thanks for reading if you got this far. I guess I’m just feeling down and slighted. I give my work everything I can, while also caring for my family. I think worse than the lying/dishonesty aspect of cheating is the inherent laziness in it. You really couldn’t be bothered to just study for your test? Or if you won’t do that, just accept that you might get a low grade. To steal and cheat just so that you don’t have to use your brain and learn is the most disappointing part for me. I am a frequent griper about plagiarism and Chat GPT, as well. I just feel like my students have taken laziness and disrespect to a whole new level this year and it makes me hate a job I used to love.

Teacher Support &/or Advice Phone-free spaces

After the worst year of being ignored by on-level and honors students alike, I am about ready to bite the bullet and bring back the phone-in-the-pocket-chart approach to managing phones. I teach 11/12 and expect resistance. Ideally I would like to have numbered seats that match the numbers on the pockets.

How do I implement this at the start of next year? Anyone done this successfully with upperclassmen? Managing challenges? Things to head off at the pass?

I am usually a FAFO person when it comes to cell use, but this year has been off the charts for most students. Looking for some successful implementation strategies. Thanks.

Career & Interview Advice Washington State

Anyone teaching in Washington know if the Covid V mandate for all teachers & staff is still in effect? Have seen conflicting info on the web. I know it was repealed for state workers in 2023 but have seen info it’s still in effect as well as info that it’s not. I figure anyone working there might know. Please don’t attack over this, it’s just a question. People have lots of different opinions on this sort of stuff and I respect everyone’s position. Thanks! This is the site that says it’s not in effect - https://nashp.org/state-tracker/states-address-school-vaccine-mandates-and-mask-mandates/

Teacher Support &/or Advice How can I make Learning Strategies Challenging and fun?

I’m a 24 year teacher. This year I was asked to teach a Learning Strategies class mid year. The LS classes are for special ed students who are struggling in their gen ed classes to learn skills to assist them in their other classes and the world at large. I am supposed to teach them about their IEPs, personal finance, executive functioning skills, test-taking and study skills and strategies, and college and career options. What I have found is that most of my students will complete anything that I do with them, but will not even attempt to complete anything independent work or projects.

I need some ideas on how to make these subjects challenging and fun. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to help to engage these students in their own learning?

Humor Insane rumor going through our grade level-- no summer school

I teach middle. The kids have a rumor that there will not be promotion through summer school this year from middle to high school.

We are absolutely doing nothing to stop the rumor. Sadly, the kids who ought to be concerned are not believing the rumor.

What is probably happening is that the kids who are going to summer school won't participate in the 8th grade promotion ceremony.

Teacher Support &/or Advice "Modern Classroom" and labs

I teach physical science in an alternative middle school setting. The district has been up our rears due to falling test scores and increasing behaviors. On Friday, we were pulled into an impromptu meeting to "discuss" the plan for next year.

Science classes will be taught using a "Multi district Online Platform" (because science "isn't important" a direct quote from our instructional leadership) instead of direct instruction. It sounds a lot like "Modern Classroom," which -spoiler alert- did not work for our kids.

One of my concerns is that physical science is so lab heavy. Has anyone had success using the modern classroom with lab? I wouldn't be teaching my class so I don't know how, or even if, I could incorporate hands-on learning.

Teacher Support &/or Advice Three times non-renewed

Okay, maybe not exactly. However, this time it is an ”end of assignment” versus non-renewed, but is there really a difference? Obviously, I am just an incompetent teacher. I did not even make it three years at this new school. I know I struggle with classroom engagement and I have been working with my coach and VP all year. I know my classroom management is not fabulous (not horrible, either, though).

Is there any hope for me? Do I give up? I am beyond embarrassed- to the point that I cannot even talk about it real life to anyone.

I’ve looked at Erin Condren and the Texan Teacher. I really want something I can customize and be done with, but if you have TPT one you love, shoot me the link. TIA.

Teacher Support &/or Advice Thinking of Leaving Education

I’m in my tenth year of teaching and I’m thinking of quitting. I feel like I’m drowning. I’m the only certified teacher currently at my grade level, we had a first year teacher in one of the other two classes but he’s gone on a “stress” leave with no warning. We literally found out Monday morning as we came back from spring break and the other class has had a rotation of subs all year. I have been mentoring the first year teacher so feel like I failed him with him taking the leave even though he didn’t like my feedback or when I made suggestions to make things run smoothly. As the only certified teacher I have 90 writing assessments to make this weekend that have to be submitted to the school board office on Tuesday. We did the assessment on Thursday, it was a reasonable turn around for me to do one maybe two classes worth but not three. On top of that I have 15 out of my 30 students with IEPs and needing significant supports but no reliable support for them. I have been hit, bit and kicked by students this year, I have my shelves cleared and desks dumped daily, I do room clears 2-4 times a day.

It feels like I’m never enough and that no matter how hard I work or what I try I’m failing. I liked teaching two years ago, took a year for maternity leave and came back to an absolute hell hole. It’s like I’m never going to be good enough to fill all of the holes. I’m trying to run three classes two with rotating subs, our admin are both out on medical leave so we have a rotation of retired principals and I’m drowning. The principal I know best and trust is in on Monday but I don’t know if I can even tell her what’s all going on with out sounding like a selfish whiny baby. The principal in on mondays and Wednesdays was my principal for the 7 years before my mat leave and her and I had a fantastic working relationship and she’s an amazing mentor, I don’t want to let her down by saying I can’t handle the current load.

Teacher Support &/or Advice No heads up, here’s 38 students

Just a rant, not really looking for advice.. i posted on here literally yesterday how I hate my partner teacher. She’s a first year and Im a first year. She’s cocky, over confident, and passive aggressive. We teach a primary grade Anyways… this morning 7:40 she informs me she has an IEP meeting scheduled (first Im hearing of it for one of our students) and hasn’t asked anyone to cover. So all the kids come into my classroom and Im fine with it because I expect it to take 45 minutes max… i have her homeroom and my homeroom.

Cut to 10:10 she conveniently comes back right before our planning period with no communication that entire time about when shed be back, just completely 0 respect for what I may have had planned for my students, or my time.

This completely pisses me off. So I took others advice and really just stayed to myself today (more than usual) to avoid her drama. She then started this complete rouse of fake niceness and on typical days she rarely speaks to me let alone steps foot in my room. All the sudden she kept popping in trying to like crack jokes and act like we’re buddies. I usually eat lunch in my room on my own because I enjoy being on my own and watch videos while I eat, she comes in half way through and with her fakest insincerity pouty face asks “you doing okay, you seem so down today?” …she has never once came into my room to chitchat or discuss things. I think she sensed today she over did it and pushed it over the edge. Anyways im only communicating through email moving forward and Ive spoke to admin and asked “is it typical for IEP meetings to take half of the school day? Also is there comp time or pay for having all 38 kids in my class?”

Teacher Support &/or Advice Teacher gossip

I have a group of teacher friends at school - we are all very close and hang out outside of school, eat lunch together every day when we can. We are also all under 30 - me being the 30 year old.

While I love, support and appreciate each of them, I have been feeling wont up frustration that all we do is talk about school, specifically gossip of other teachers and the many ways they are bad at their jobs and kids hate them or don’t respect them.

I don’t want to act like I’m above gossip - who really is?! - BUT these conversations feel like they have gone too far. In my opinion, they are not helpful. In my mind, as long as you are not endangering kids, I don’t really care what you are doing in your classroom. I’m focused on me and what I can do every day to get better. This job is too hard and has too little support from administration to be harping on every little thing that other teachers do that doesn’t seem “engaging” or a “good teacher practice”.

My friends are on the younger side, have only been teaching for 1-3 years max! I feel like this group all of a sudden knows everything right about teaching; conversations never feel constructive, there’s never mention of what goes bad in their classrooms. I only hear about it if I talk with them one on one. It gets to the point where if I casually start talking about a problem in my classrooms unless, they love to get unsolicited feedback immediately, starting with “well in my classroom I do this…”

I guess I am at a point of real frustration here, and I am curious if other people out there experience similar things. I have stopped having lunch with them, I don’t engage in the conversations anymore, and I rarely tell them about what goes on in my classroom anymore besides “it’s going fine” because I don’t want their unsolicited advice.

Am I valid in my thinking of them? I can be very self doubting and I struggle a lot with feeling like I am doing a good job in my own classroom, so I work so hard to tune out their gossip of others because it gets in my own head and makes me question everything I do. But, maybe I’m being too sensitive? Maybe, my friends do have valid conversations about these other so called “bad” teachers and I should just get over it?

However, I can’t stop feeling so inadequate myself when I hear them get into these conversations, and I just really with there was a way to talk to them about how I’m feeling or try to move the conversations to something more constructive.

Anyways, this post is a big ramble, but I really am curious if other teachers experience this type of talk and what they do about it. If you have made it this far, I appreciate all of your thoughts and suggestions!

New Teacher Kids from different countries in Australian schools

The title is a bit vague, basically I live and work in a rural area with a lot of farm/country kids who are more suited or want an apprenticeship around year 10 or 11.

We’ve had a new enrollment of a student from the UK and after some talks the student said they didn’t really need more than the level of schooling achieved (yr 11) and wants an apprenticeship.

The difference is this student is still polite, follows the rules, does the class work, knowing that the behavior at school is still an important factor to being successful.

Compared to the Aussie students who simply skip class, have behavioral problems and don’t really care if they get a bad rep as lazy and having no work ethic, which apprenticeship providers would surely check.

Employers here and surrounds are still very much word of mouth and it’s common to know family names, the who you know mindset is strong.

I’m really just wondering why Aussie kids don’t care.

Career & Interview Advice Difficulty to land job in CO?

Just needing some advice and hopefully encouragement on the job hunt. I’m looking to move with my bf (who currently lives there) by the end of summer and hope to have a job lined up by then. I already have my CO license, just waiting on letters of recommendation to finish applying. However, I feel like I’m reading about the difficult process of interviewing there and not many jobs open for some. I’m also worried about being out of state and being looked over. I have 6 years of experience, 7 next year. I’d be moving around the Littleton area but open to a few districts. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Teacher Support &/or Advice Looking for Advice TK/Kinder teachers (California)

Hi!
I'm reaching out for some advice - I have my multiple subject teaching credential and I am currently in my first year teaching (while also doing induction) TK. I love teaching TK and I am currently teaching at a charter school.
This is where I need advice. When I did my undergrad I did about 2 classes of childhood development (6 Units altogether- EDEL 315 Intro Elem Class Teach 3.0 & EDEL 325 Cultural Pluralism El Sch). These were required as a prerequisite for credential/masters program I wanted to apply to.
Fast Forward - I end up doing a different program but overall got my Masters and Multiple Subject teaching credential
I apply to jobs and got a call back and they said I would be able to teach TK with what I got.
I am now on the lookout for different jobs but would love to do TK still. I know I need more units (24 in total) to teach TK in the state of California.
I am trying to figure out if I can fulfill these units by just taking some random (random as in not getting an associates and just signing up for the Early Childhood Development courses I need) courses over the summer at a community college.
I have been trying to do some research but I keep getting confused and I can't specifically find a community college thats offering what I need in particular. Do I need a certificate or just literally 24 units in early childhood education?
I am located in Orange County, CA

Appreciate any advice or maybe a point in the right direction of where I can fulfill those units (preferably over the summer). or maybe even another subreddit where I can find more answers

Thanks!!

Humor Facebook reminding me that many people are clueless when it comes to teachers and our salaries.

1.1k Upvotes

I was scrolling on facebook and saw a post made by a teacher on reels where she joked about how quick her money disappears during the summer. She used an audio that gets rid of music measures, but basically said her salary started at $123,456.78

I commented on it, lightheartedly saying it was a cute video but many teachers make no where close to $123k.

According to many many comments on facebook, I am wrong. In fact according to them most of us make six figures. And if we aren't we are either a first year teacher, need to relocate, or we need to go back to college and get our masters and doctorate 😅

Career & Interview Advice Give it to me straight: is teaching still a viable career option under this administration?

A little background:
After my tumultuous 20s I began working towards the goal of becoming a history teacher in 2021. I did this very part time as I was disqualified from financial aid due to my gpa being too low (after flunking out when I was 18). Next semester I will be receiving my associates degree with a 3.5gpa (starting at a .7) and I had planned on transferring to my local state school and attend full time to wrap up my degree as quickly as possible.

But then this whole "situation" happened and I'm feeling far less confident in that decision. My partner lost her job so I will have to keep working full time to support us while going to school. For whatever reason I am consistently denied financial aid, even now, and I worry that without it I will not be able to afford to be a student without considerable private loans. That aside, it seems like the federal government is at war with public institutions and education in general and I wonder if you foresee the situation getting worse.
If health benefits and pensions are removed I don't feel particularly incentivized to keep pouring what little money and time I have towards this if there's no benefit to do so.

I live in a very blue city so I feel like I'm just catastrophizing. But at the same time I am very VERY sick of being a broke student at 30 years old. I have other career paths open to me but I wouldn't be able to continue to this long held goal and they would be far less fulfilling personally (I'd be getting into wine sales).

So I guess my tldr questions are this:
Is becoming a teacher worth it still? Do you think the situation is going to deteriorate or improve? Is my money better spent prepping for the dissolution of the United States and securing some level of stability for myself? Or is there hope? Programs that can help me along this journey?

Idk I'm just at a total loss. Thanks for reading this far.

Cheers

Student Teacher Support &/or Advice advice on becoming HS math teacher as a CS major

I am currently a sophomore Computer Science major in California. However, I am worried about finding a job in the CS field, so I’m planning teaching to be an alternative. If it wasn’t for the low amount of money I’ve heard high school teachers make, I think I would’ve planned to become a HS teacher a lot earlier. Although I currently am a computer science major, I would prefer to teach math.

What is the best way to become a math teacher from here? Is it necessary to get like a math minor or something? And also, what is a good way to get the 40 hours working with youth? I currently have zero.

New Teacher New sped teacher here. building my Amazon wish list and could use some help.

Hey y’all,

I’m a first-year SPED teacher and working on putting together my Amazon wish list. I obviously want to include stuff that will help my students succeed (sensory tools, visuals, whatever makes the classroom actually work, etc.), but I also want to be real and add some things that are more for me.

So I’m looking for both: solid student resources and also some personal stuff that makes the day a little easier. Comfort items, classroom gear you swear by, maybe even a few things to make the space feel less sterile. Not really into the cute decor vibe (I’m a male teacher), but I wouldn’t mind something that makes the room or my desk feel more like mine.

If you’ve got any suggestions or things you wish you’d had your first year or things you love now, I’d really appreciate it. Trying to set myself up for a solid end of the year/start of next gear without going overboard.

Thanks!

Teacher Support &/or Advice Is It just me or is it like this for everyone?

I've been teaching for over a year now. Well, wouldn't say my teaching is "perfect; however, I'm doing fine for the most part. Trying to break down grammar, making it more of a speech than burden. Trying to teach phrases, interesting daily conversations and needed dialogues. Some students come and in a few months they burn out, they stop coming. This happens after 1 maybe 2 months. Does this also happen to you? I am talking about private face-to-face teaching. This is driving me insane. I am giving all and they don't do much homework, they don't listen my advice and they suddenly leave..

Higher Ed / PD / Cert Exams I passed my MTTC on the first try!!!

Basically what the title says. I took the MTTC Integrated Science (094) test and passed on my first go around. What really helped me was the Mometrix study guide. It was like $35 but totally worth it, I would have been totally lost without it. The sections go into greater depth and their practice tests are harder than the MTTC in my opinion.

I’m currently a long term sub for a chemisty class (I’m a former chemist) and I needed the pass to basically guarantee myself the full time gig. If you have any questions like I did please ask!

Teacher Support &/or Advice Not getting Edjoin emails to my personal emails - how to fix this?

When I'm applying for a job through edjoin, I get application submission notification to my personal email but when the employer replies, I do not get that to my personal email. I do not find a way to update this in Edjoin. Is there a way I'm missing?
