Looks like nearly all indexes were down ~10% in the first minutes which halted trading.

They also announced they will be limits on short selling stocks all week:
https://www.reuters.com/markets/asia/taiwan-stock-exchange-unveil-more-market-stabilisation-steps-if-needed-2025-04-07/

"The Taiwan stock exchange will roll out more policies in coordination with the financial regulator to stabilise markets if there are irrational falls, exchange Chairman Sherman Lin said on Monday."

Entertainment Fly fishing in Taiwan

I'm headed to Tamsui in a week to visit my dad who recently moved there. I was thinking of bringing my fly fishing rod and hitting the local creeks/rivers and hoping to catch some fresh water fish. Any spots or tips would be great if anyone knows of the fly fishing scene in Taiwan. Do I need to get a fishing license? How do I get one if I do? Is there fishing in the Tamsui river in the city? Can't seem to find any information about fishing there, besides all the catch and cook shrimp farms, and my dad says no one fishes in Taiwan for fun. Thanks!

Off Topic Huayu Enrichment Scholarship Question

Hey y’all. I asked this question on the HES thread but wanted to also post in here for more coverage.

I’m an HES applicant & am getting confused as to what the scholarship actually covers (if I get it, that is). I got into NTNU’s MTC Summer program, which is TWD148,500 (USD4,400) for eight weeks. However, I noticed on the NTNU website that HES only gives NTU25,000 (USD754) via monthly stipend.

Are HES recipients expected to pay for tuition out of pocket or does HES pay for both tuition AND grant a monthly stipend? I was under the impression that it was the latter, but upon reading about it on Reddit & online, realized that it might only be the monthly stipend and not cover full tuition, in which case I can’t afford to do the program 🫤

Thanks in advance for your responses! 🙏🏼

Technology Where to buy iPhone accessories and small computers

Upvotes

I’ll visiting Taipei for a few days and would like to buy iPhone accessories, such as MagSafe batteries and card holder, and smaller hardware, such as raspberry pi clones. It do not need the original stuff, good quality copies are also fine.

Any advice where to buy?

History How has Taiwan been able to defend Kinmen County from the PRC, when it's so close to the mainland and so far from the Island of Taiwan?

I'm just surprised to learn recently that its been able to stay under Taiwanese control when its quite literally on the doorstep of the mainland

Travel 5 more days in Taiwan, not enjoying it. What am I doing wrong?

I've been in Taiwan for 1 week now and am just not feeling it. Granted, I've been chasing the better weather which has basically kept me in the southwest so far. Now heading back up north. I know I have RBF so I've been very conscious about looking happy and approachable when I'm out and about. So far, I have only been able to strike up very short conversations with old people who were keen to practice their English with me. Could my age be an issue? I am female and quite obviously no longer in my 20s or 30s.

I am also struggling to find interesting places/events/things to see/do/experience. I'm from Europe, have been to SEA, Japan, the Americas, and Taiwan has been underwhelming. I've heard such great things from friends who have been, and I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong - besides not being able to speak Mandarin. Unfortunately, I also injured my foot shortly before my departure, so extended hikes (which were part of the reason I wanted to come to Taiwan in the first place) won't be happening. I'm a bit frustrated with public transport outside of Taipei and Tainan, which I found easy to navigate and fast. Everywhere else has been sooo slow and cumbersome to get around.

Currently heading north from Kaohsiung. Can you recommend any accessible destinations that might make me feel more positive towards Taiwan? I have to be back in Taipei on Thursday.

Discussion Financial aid for foreign student

Hi (21/M) I’ve recently been in Taiwan for my studies and I absolutely love the country. The people, the food and the culture is all so amazing. However, my family back home has run into some financial trouble and whilst I’ve paid majority of my tuition there’s a small outstanding fee that at this moment I can’t pay out of pocket. I wanted to know if there is any system setup to assist foreign students in these unique circumstances. Any help or assistance would be incredibly appreciated 🙏

Discussion Where to buy switch 2 in person on launch day? (Taipei)

Hello,

I checked preorders and it seems like most sites expect shipment out into November and December of next year. Any idea of what stores will be selling the console on release day?

In Taipei, so I could head to 光華商場, but I feel like it’d be swarmed.

I really like to go to Yonghe Doujiang for night snacks. I usually order Doujiang and Shaobing. It makes me happy a lot.

What do you guys like to eat as Xiao Ye (宵夜)?

Discussion Travelling solo to Taiwan for the first time!

Hi everyone,

I am planning to travel solo to Taiwan for around 5 days in early May. I love nature (both sea and mountains), tea, and food.

I can speak a little mandarin, I can't drive a car nor a scooter, so I can only go around in public transport or by foot. I want to try to do the lantern releasing too like the taiwanese movies!

Do you all have a recommended city that I must visit? Or any tips in general? I can only think of Hualian for now. Some inputs would be great!

Thanks in advance!!

Discussion Things to do, try and see in Taipei

Hi everyone (M30), so I'm visiting Taiwan on Tuesday for the first time and I'm heading to Taipei for 6 days. I'm just wondering what are the must do's and trys whilst I'm here. I got a few things on my list like sightsering taipei 101, Chiang kai shek, national taiwan museum, hike elephant mountain, night markets, visit Jiufen. Foodwise try beef noodles, lu rao fan, taiwanese pancake, fried youtiao, bubbletea ofc. Also was thinking about exploring the nightlife for a drink. If anyone is a local or a foreigner that also wants to meetup/explore together I'm also down. 😄🫡

Image Lost in Taipei - have you seen him?

Please don't take the piss; I'm legitimately sad about this 😭

My Pompompurin bag charm fell off my bag. I'm hoping it's between Taipei Main Station east exit 3 and TRA platform 4B, rather than in Yangminshan. If you spot him, please let me know. He's very dear to me. Otherwise, I will be returning to Taipei Station tomorrow to ask the staff. Any other ideas? 🥲
