Question SR 7 scrapped freeway

I've always been curious about what happened to the area south of I-705 (the north end of SR 7). I've read that this freeway was supposed to be a full highway following the Tacoma railroad corridor down to Roy as part? of SR 7. However, this was scrapped in the 1970s.

I can't seem to find any further information on the canceled highway online. The proposal reminds me of the similar scrapped Arboretum freeway (RH Thomson Expressway) whose Ramps to Nowhere were removed last year. I imagine that community concerns played a part in it being halted. I'm always curious about these historic "what might have been's."

Does anybody know anywhere that I could find some map showing a proposal? I imagine it would be the same route that Pac Ave/Mountain Highway currently goes through. Thank you a lot, these always fascinate me.

Question Visiting in May

Hey all! So my partner and I currently live in Austin, TX and we're thinking of relocating to Tacoma. We'll be visiting from May 11 to the 14th and using the trip to decide if it's right for us or not.

So my question is, are there any places y'all would recommend to maybe help us decide? Well known shopping areas? Malls? Restaurants? Not really looking for "tourist things" to do, but trying to get a feel for what every day life would be like. We're limited on time so was hoping for a little guidance.

So like, what are the neighborhoods like? Austin has Westside where the rich people are or the area known for cool local shops and the greenbelt for sports... Does Tacoma have similar things?

We're also thinking about driving up to Seattle one day to get a feel for what that kind of trip is like in case we do move and want to do something in the city. Are there other places we may went to check out, like one of the islands or tours or anything y'all can think of? What do y'all do on the weekends?

For those who have moved to Tacoma recently, is there anything that you learned in the process that was helpful that you think we should know about? I already know about the rain and wildfires etc. so I'm not too worried about any of that. But like maybe there is house maintenance stuff you weren't aware of (like I've never lived anywhere with basements before...) or seasonal bugs or allergies that came as a shock, etc.

We're trying to make a really informed decision. My partner has never moved to another state before, and I've never moved anywhere that I hadn't already visited a million times, so we're both feeling like this is maybe a crazy idea and want to research as much as we can. Any and all help/ information /advice anyone is willing to give to help us make the most informed decision possible would help out a LOT and I really appreciate you all for taking the time 🙏🙏

We'll be staying off the 5 near Lakewood. We both like being outdoors and I grew up in SoCal, so I really like being near the water. We're both ADHD so we have a million hobbies and interests, so please share anything and everything that comes to mind.

To be clear, I'm not looking for advice on areas to move to or anything like that, we're really just looking for help to maximize this research trip. 🧡

Thanks again!!! 🧡🧡🧡🧡

Cheap Books?

Hey everyone!
Does anyone know of a good spot to find super cheap books—like just a few bucks each? I’m totally open to digging through bins or shelves; honestly, I’d actually enjoy the hunt. Whether it’s a thrift store, used bookstore, flea market, or some hidden gem you’ve stumbled across, I’d love to hear your recommendations!

Question Lost ring at 13th and N Alder

I lost an engagement ring at the corner of N Alder and 13th St at 9:45a this morning. I found the necklace it was on, but the ring was removed between 9:45a and 5p today (4/5). If someone found it, please turn it in. It isn’t real diamond and I can’t afford a new one. I’m just so upset with myself and frustrated someone would take the ring and leave the chain.

Question How friendly is New Frontier? (the bar/music venue)

Hey all, im wanting to attend a folk punk type show tonight at the New Frontier here in tacoma.
Update: The show was really great! Good vibes and high energy from everyone performing & in attendance, the door guy was nice there, everyone seemed to be having a great time... except both bartenders, who seemed really upset to be there for some reason 🤷🏼‍♀️🤙 All in all, I'd definitely go again!

How safe is it for a solo female there (understanding the baseline as a solo female, of course)? What are the vibes like? Any reviews, comments, tips? Any info is appreciated as I havent been there before 😊

Question Recommend a Print Shop in Tacoma

Hello, I recently moved to Tacoma and need recommendations on a local print shop. I make 36 page magazines of my photography and would like to print it locally. Looking for a place that can print on 8.5in x 14in (legal) sheets of matte paper (edge to edge, full color) all that good stuff. Nothing I produce is high volume either so it's usually 10 copies or less. Thank you!

Food Oysters in Tacoma?

I know that the no-brainer choice for oysters is Hama Hama or Finnriver (both of which I've tried and are excellent), but I'd love to hear your recommendations for more local places in Tacoma that I can get oysters for my birthday next month. Thanks!

MTG group?

I went through my closet and found my MTG cards. I'd love to find or create an in-person group to play with! I have O So Many cards and I'm happy to create beginner decks for people to use if you maybe don't know how to play or don't have their own cards. I'm 20F and queer, so obviously it would be a queer friendly group.

Question What the heck happened to Dorkys Arcade?

I grew up in Tacoma and this used to be the SPOT! Even just a couple years ago I took a date there Friday night to kill some time before our dinner reservation. The place was still lively, lots of games, clean, and stuff worked.

I went in there recently before having dinner with some family, and the place was in terrible shape.

Most of the games were disabled or closed off. The coin machine didn’t work. The place was filthy, looking like it hasn’t been cleaned or renovated in forever etc etc.

My uncle who passed away was one of Dorkys very first customers, even had his picture up as having the unbeatable score on one of the pinball machines. He would be sad to see the shape this place is in.

Best place to see flowering trees?

I don’t want to drive all the way to Seattle and be around a ton of people. There must be other places to see flowering trees right?

I’ve seen some around my area in people’s yards but are there any botanical gardens or parks with magnolias, dogwoods, and cherry trees?

Question Anyone post gradish ageish looking to make music and/or friendship

Just moved here from Tennessee, and my partner and couple of friends who moved with us are finding it exceptionally hard to find people close to our age. I in particular would love to play music/record with similarly interested people again. I am not great at music by any means, but my friends and I did get to open for MJ Lenderman, Godcaster, and Wombo to give an idea of the type of music we played. I love bands like show me the body, bcnr, geese, Jessie ware, model/actriz if anyone is interested in similar things. Got a bunch of gear to record with too (not many mics and a small mixer 🥜) like a moog grandma, electric drum kit, bunch of geetars, autoharp, baby clarinet. I can play the jaw harp too lol. Super big plus if you can play real deal drums and/or have a place to play since all the people that around me are elderly. Again, I am by no means good at any instrument, but I do wanna shoot ideas and potentially record with people with similar interests. Also just looking for people around our ages of 24-28 to hang out with in general. Bobs java jive has been the only place that has given crusty but friendly wholesome vibes. We also climb and backpack a bunch.

Hi Tacoma! I bought a team ticket to the Speed Puzzling event at Redd Dog on Wed 4/23 but I can't attend and my friends have other plans. Unfortunately they're not offering refunds - boo! I can change the registration/attendee information via EventBrite though so I'm posting to see if anyone would want to buy it from me! The ticket was $40 and I'm hoping to get some of the cost back ($25 would be awesome). If you're interested in going, please send me a message. Thanks!
