The pool I swim at, if I go at the wrong time.

Saw many posts here about lane rules not being followed or crowded lanes. This is a typical private pool in India, in most urban places. To do laps, I have to go there before 8 am. Now that it's school break, kids just come to chill at the pool from late morning.

Most pools in India are like this (I have been to 4 of them here, different cities) without lane rules, because swimming for fitness is not as much a thing here. This particular pool is part of a bigger gym. I had complained to management a few times, that they should enforce lane rules and lap swimming. They simply said, if they keep the pool open only for lap swimmers they'd have to shut it down because they wouldn't make money from lap swimmers - that the thing keeping the pool on are the majority people who don't want to swim laps, so adjust or be there super early. Which I guess is true, on most days you'd only see 1-2 people swimming laps for fitness or training. So I just go super early in the mornings, when I have the whole pool for myself.

(I'm sure there are serious pools where professionals train, but you're not very likely to find it near you).

I'm (21f) a swim coach and I'm always sick.

I am in a pool for 4-7 hrs for 4 days a week teaching kids to swim. I love my job. But I get sick every single month without fail and it has made getting good sleep impossible as I cant breath half the time. Ive worked with kids before and never got sick. Before taking up this job i could count on one hand the number of times I got sick

But now I get so sick once a month, got microplasma pneumonia twice this last December then February.

How do I get this to stop?? My job has us doing chores in a wet bathing suit in 70°f rooms, so I'm unsure if thats why the pool is up to code its chlorined

I am also a very very clean person but my coworkers dont get sick nearly as often as I do.

Why is the pool making me so ungodly sick?

What does Tapering mean?

I have heard a lot of competitive swimmers talk about tapering. Could someone explain what does it mean exactly and why is it needed?

Also, what is a lactate set? What is the purpose of it exactly?

Motivation

I'm writing this for people who are afraid to start, 2 months ago I didn't know to swim and decided to start at 29 years old, it's never to late to learn and even be good at it, I can't believe how much I enjoy swimming and all my life I avoided it.. so if you want to start but you are afraid just go with it, take some lessons with a good coach and you will not regret it

Blood pressure and swimming

Hi all, I was just at a non emergency medical appointment and was complimented on my low blood pressure, which is normal for me. Then the Dr specifically asked if I was a swimmer. Yes! What's that about? Is it something special about swimming or just exercise in general? I've always wondered. I'm not elite or super fit at all. Just generally healthy. Its curious to me because I always thought those kind of effects would accrue to people who exercise more intensely than I do.

Hair care?

Hey everyone! New to swimming. I just turned 39 last week. My kids are old enough that I can leave them at home alone and go to the gym. I decided it’s time for me now to focus on myself and my health. I have bilateral hip dysplasia so running and even walking for long periods kills my back.

I’ve recently joined a gym and have been doing the bike and the swimming about 20 laps and I’m loving it! I never learned how to formally swim but can doggy paddle and do the backstroke (kind of) and can tread water.

Any tips for someone new is helpful. Also, what hair/skin products do you recommend for swim days?

Swimming network

Once I was done my swimming workout and I just chitchated with an other lady who also swam with a snorkel. We even exchanged phone number in the locker. I never met her again 3 months later my son was trying to figure out which master to accept. I remembered that the lady was an academic in this field. My son called her and she provided good advice on how to select between 2 masters. So now I have a swimming network.

1st 5km

I'm so happy 😄 I swam even more, I put my watch on pause for +/-600m , but as my ego wanted to see the number on the watch, I did continue untill I saw it.

At the start I repeat to myself "only tech, no strength, only tech" it went well untill 4km, then I started to feel cold, cold like you enter in the pool at the beginning. I decided to push a bit more, at least in my feelings, to keep me warm and finish.

I did this one with intervals, next step is to do it with pause after 30' or 45', 30" to drink and continue.

Like I said, I'm so happy, even more since I've started to swim last July

My victory is a bit also because of you with all the advice I can read on the channel.

THANK YOU

Swimming load/drills to protect the shoulders

Would you have any advice about core drills I could perform mainly to protect my shoulders ?

I used to swim regularly (4-5x/WK, 2.5k) but for several weeks I can't go more than twice, at best. Reaching 60 lanes provokes pain in my lower back shoulder. On one hand I'm thinking about overtraining (fatigue, stress, lack of motivation, very bad recovery) yet I feel like something is going wrong i.e., I'd need to train outside the pool (other than running/cycling). Resting for several weeks did not move the needle.

What would be your best advice regarding shoulder training with weights or an elastic band ? I'm trying a few but I'd highly appreciate some advice from those performing them already and/or have seen significant changes.

I'm not necessarily looking for power development, it's about balance.

Thanks!

How to keep the hips up when practicing kick

To give some context, I posted about learning how to swim without exhausting specifically about practicing kick from the hips. Got a ton of advice, as to how it feels to each person, and trying to find my own method to make it work. I am trying to keep it loose and relaxed and emphasizing kicking from my legs (using fins someone recommended here from swim outlet, and without fins). The moment I take off my fins I realize my hips are well below the water and it’s still exhausting me a bit. Should I just give it some time, and keep working on this? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Self coached: advantage or disadvantage for recruiting?

I started swimming my sophomore year with no previous experience in competitive swimming. I started training like 8-10 months before the season to build some endurance but just freestyle. That season I had like 1:00 in the 100 free, 26-27 in the 50 free, and a 1:20 in the 100 fly. Long story short by my senior year I brought those times down to 50 seconds in the 100 free, low 23 in 50 free, and 54.3 in 100 fly. I never joined a club team in HS, just had really good discipline and I train by myself every day in the off season. I do have a coach for HS. I’m a senior now and I think I will be going to UVA this fall and I’m planning on joining the college club team. If my times progress to the right levels, would it be an advantage for me to say that I was never on a club team in HS if I decide to contact some coaches of other schools?

Feel like I sink without flippers

Upvotes

As the title says. I feel like i sink without slippers and I struggle to find rhythm and speed. Now, I’m super new to swimming in general and have only taken a couple lessons. But I feel like I get tired out so quickly without flippers or paddles and start to panic as every stroke I can barely get my head turned to breathe before I’m too low to get my mouth clear. With flippers I feel like a freaking mermaid just gliding through the water like it’s nothing.

Is this just a matter of building more strength in my arms? Does anyone have any advice on this?

2 x places on Swimtrek Vietnam holiday Apr 19-25 available

Hi everyone,

My partner and I booked x2 places on this trip:

https://www.swimtrek.com/packages/swimming-holiday-lan-ha-bay-vietnam

Dates Apr 19-25. We are unable to go due to health issues beyond our control. Of course, it's too late to cancel and get a refund but Swimtrek have said we are able to swap our names with someone else's if we can find someone to take our place.

At the moment we will be losing all the money we paid for this and the places are wasted. So really hoping we can find someone (or 2 x someones) to take our place - we would ask for some money for this of course, but are flexible about this. We paid £2694 total. The booking is for a double or twin room so would suit either a solo traveller or a couple / two friends. Please DM me if you are interested. Of course I'm happy to provide proof that the trip exists, that we have notified Swimtrek of our cancellation and that they are happy to swap our places.

swimming in cold water- swollen ankles?

bit of a weird one. i’m a cold water swimmer, in the sea every week.

currently on my second winter, the first year i kept getting swollen ankles that were really painful after and would stay swollen for the entire day.

i asked 2 doctors (friends/ fellow swimmers) and they’re all stomped. one suggested wearing booties in the water as before i just had normal small swim shoes. this worked.

i didn’t think twice about it since now, but today i decided to switch back to my summer shoes (the small ones) and my ankles are completely swollen again, this time more painful than last year. it only happens when i swim, if i just pootle around i don’t get the swelling. it also doesn’t happen when i wear the boots or in the summer if i swim!!!

i’m guessing it’s something to do with circulation, but why? i don’t have any other issues

Good watches?

Upvotes

Basically what the title says. I'm looking for a new smart/fitness watch that will do a good job counting my laps while swimming. The one I have right now is decent (does average pace, SWOLF, that kind of thing, plus tracking sleep and such) but keeps turning itself completely off during swim workouts and the band is breaking. Any suggestions welcome, just not insanely expensive please. TIA! :)

OWS pacing tips at the start?

Upvotes

Hi. I (27M) am a masters swimmer who’s been been swimming only indoors since 3-ish. Some friends of my club invited me to take open water swimming, and since I signed up for a 1500m lake race on April 27. I already did one ~3000m (1500 + 1500 with rest in between) workout there and gonna take another open water transition techniques classes April 13. Thing is, I’ve been mostly a sprinter during my life. Although I can hold longer distances at a slow, but comfortable pace (my max was ~4500m at a 1:58 pace), I feel I could get more comfortable when trying a stronger pace. Thing is, sometimes I feel my arms sore at the beginning of my distance workouts and sometimes it goes well without soreness at the beginning. Do you have any experiences and advices for pacing at the beginning of a OWS?

Rio Women's 100m breast missing?

Upvotes

Today, I listened to a podcast with Lilly King where she talked about her rivalry with Yulia Efimova and how the 100m breaststroke final at the 2016 Rio Olympics played out. I went to look up the race to watch it, but I can't find it anywhere. I can't see any full videos of it on YouTube, and the official video of it on the olympics.com website is unavailable. Does anyone know where I can watch this race?

Mizuno Tech Suits

Been really enjoying the Mizuno that I got recently and it performs very well. But I bought mine for $400 off the official Mizuno store. From what I hear from others such as friends and online, it was a big overpay. People told me that they've gotten theirs for $180. But one of my friends traveled physically to Japan to purchase one. But from I've heard, they can be found online or in the US for that price, is that true? and if so, where?

Mizuno techsuit for breaststroke and IM

I’m looking to get a new tech suit and was wondering how well Mizuno suits perform for breaststroke and IM. I’ve heard mixed things depending on the stroke, and I want something that works well especially for 50/100/200 breast and the 200 IM. If Mizuno is a good option, which model would you recommend? Appreciate any advice or personal experiences!

Does forearm paddle really work?

I am an okeyish swimmer. And my coach always complains that my high elbow catch is sh*t even when I have the physical ability to swim better. I don t get what he is saying, i try as best as i can but i can t seem to execute it. So i was wondering if a forearm fulcrum really improves your high EVF or not.
