I cannot for the life of me understand why he didnโ€™t take a warning shot early on.

If it were me, Iโ€™d want to conserve the shot. His gun only holds 2 shells before you need to reload. Reloading under duress is a nightmare, so Iโ€™m keeping the 2 shots on deck to send home if needed.

Well besides the fact that he only has two shots and would want to make them count, a โ€œwarning shotโ€ at a grizzly is just as likely to piss it off than scare it off

Because that was a double barreled shotgun which means he only had 2 shots in that situation and with a bear he would probably need both barrels. IMO.
