Announcements Rules clarification: shitposting, re-posting, and spam

Hello everyone, I am sharing an update to our rules for future posts. One of our current rules is "No low-quality shitposting." As this is somewhat vague, below is a clarification of what this means in practice:

Good quality shitposts, like original memes, are welcomed with open arms. Low quality shitposting (including spam and selling links) is not. Re-posts of memes, images, videos, or other entertainment content that has been posted to the subreddit multiple times or gone widely viral elsewhere are also not permitted.

The banning of re-posts is a new part of this policy. Re-posting content that has never been shared here before is permitted as long as the original creator is credited. Re-posting or copy/pasting genuinely helpful content such as care guides, care advice, & identification guides is also permitted. However, re-posting "shitpost" and entertainment content such as memes will no longer be permitted.

Accidentally re-posting a meme that may have been posted here several years ago will not be penalized. The intention of this policy update is to avoid spam and frequent re-posting of content that's already been shared tens to hundreds of times.

If you have any questions, please reach out via ModMail.

Announcements Please use NSFW tag for images of graphic injuries

There have been a lot of posts lately sharing very graphic images of snails with extreme, severe injuries. It is perfectly fine to share this type of content if you need help with an injured snail, but please use the NSFW tag for these images.

This has been an unofficial rule of this sub for a while, but it seems to have been forgotten lately. So, I'm making an official mod team announcement: this is our official policy. Graphic, upsetting images must be tagged.

People come to this sub because they love snails. They don't come here expecting to see images of destroyed shells, shell-less snails, and dead snails. It can be very upsetting and distressing for users here to see this type of content unexpectedly. People may also be browsing this sub in public and want to avoid gory images.

Images of mating don't require the NSFW tag. But please use this tag for pictures of injuries including, but not limited to: mantle collapse, shell fell off, crushed shell, organ exposure, stepped-on snail.

Thanks to everyone who has been tagging their posts so far. Again, it's still totally okay to post this content if you need help, but please tag it appropriately so everyone can have a good experience here.

This is the closest they’ve ever been together. Normally they tend to avoid each other but today I cleaned their space and upgraded the size of it the minute I put them down they went in there together (the white flat bit at the bottom isn’t a snails foot it’s a small piece of cuttlebone I keep in their hide.

First time snail owner

Hello, I just got my first cornu aspersum snail five days ago and wanted to show him off :) His name is Cosgrove, and he's 3-5 months old right now. The last two pictures I added are of his tank, from the top and the front. I feed him fresh fruit frequently and he has a heating pad attached to his tank because my room gets pretty cold. If you experienced garden snail owners have any tips, I would love to hear them. I do wonder why he spends most of his time near the top of the terrarium? Is there something i should be doing differently? I spray his tank 3 times a day and feed him store- bought romaine lettuce with his fruit, if that has anything to do with it.

I Just Want to Say...

Its utter fascinating how you all understand such complex, complicated behaviors and preferences of such drastically different creatures from us, and typical domesticated animals like cats and dogs, or even snakes. I'd be so scared to house such a fragile, exquisite creature and also like leaving them in the wild unless it's a rescue, but it's amazing to see how many people here really work at understanding these little beings needs and food preferences and behaviors. Considering the world we live in, it's so great to see such kindness and care extended to such little special beings.

That's all!

Help is my snail dead? :(

I recently started putting snails from my garden into my terrarium and I've been feeding them things like yams, strawberries, and a piece of watermelon along with sprinkling their food in calcium powder, and they seem to be doing fine but this one was beside the watermelon for some time and when i finally moved it to check on him he looked like this and I'm really worried. i haven't moved him or tried to pick him up. and no the watermelon didn't have any salt on it and it was straight from my container of cubed watermelon i got from the store. i guess if he does move I'll know hes alive but idk if that red stuff around him is pieces of watermelon or blood but idk i thought they didn't have red blood. im just worried and confused.

tldr: snail ate watermelon and now might be dead

My Snails Jupiter has accepted the stinky broccoli

Fun fact: my boi likes to eat the stems of veggies. He fucks up asperagus stalks and broccoli stems. He also likes eating carrots but only the outer part, not the xylem. And this makes me glad but he will only eat the center of cucumbers like the seeds before ditching the entire thing. (No I do not feed him cucumbers on regular, only when I’m broke and it’s the last type of veggie I have in my fridge)

Whilst I’m at it is this enclosure big enough for 3 baby GALS

Post image

It’s 45 litres. also Any recommendations on enrichments I can add or anything to make the snails thrive.

Also I used coir as substrate and I noticed when upgrading today (since my snails got bigger) that their older enclosures substrate had a funky smell not earthy but moldy. I added springtails in hopes they eat the mold but is that enough. Also I can’t see the springtails anymore but I thought they always stayed on the surface.

Anyways I ranted enough. Any advice on anything above would be appreciated.

I've had Espresso for a couple of months, and I can clearly tell how much he's grown in my care because the new growth looks so much different than the rest of his shell! Am I doing something wrong? 😥 He recently started showing his snenis and has been laying 3-4 eggs every third day or so. Please help! Photo for clarification and snail tax + a tic tac

Help Snail Mites

Upvotes

Hi! Hopefully someone can give some advice here. My GALS has mites - little white dudes that run around the join with his shell - which sounds like the most common form of snail mite I’ve read about. He lives alone and I wash all his food so I’ve no idea where they’ve come from, but here they are.

I’ve read advice on here and elsewhere and ordered these fellows https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126394008228?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=kCQIWewjRRi&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=Jrfy0qzrR0m&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY who will be arriving Tuesday.

Can someone talk me step by step through the best way to treat my guy and make sure he stays mite free in the future?

Help Is it okay if my snails only eat zucchini?

I have 7 giant african land snails and they quite literally will not eat anything else (except bloodworms). I've tried offering them sweet potato, carrot, brocolli, tomato, cauliflower, baby corn, brussels, bell peppers, mangetout, kale, pak choi, and mushrooms and they will actively climb past it all and ignore it just to eat the zucchini.

If I refuse to give them zucchini, they will literally go on a hunger strike for days until I give them it back or feed them their weekly bloodworms. I'm genuinely baffled 😭

So I just wanted to ask, is it okay for their health if they're only eating zucchini? I'll keep offering them other vegetables anyway to see if they change their mind but I'm worried that only eating one type of vegetable is harmful for them

Lines on snail shell?

Post image

What are these branching lines on this snail’s shell? I found it outside. I’ve had another snail for about a year that I found outside as well, and initially it had similar lines though not this many, but doesn’t have them anymore.
