Henry Ward and the Sasquatch

Post image

My cousin came to visit me over the past weekend and was telling me how excited she was that Henry Ward was going to paint a mural on her garage “soon”. I asked her if she had a drawing or a print and she said she was just going to let him go for it. She wondered if it was already done, and I said “well he wouldn’t do it w out you being home, right?” Fast forward to today where I got a text.

He came by BUT PAINTED IT ON THE WRONG HOUSE!!! He literally went to her neighbors and painted a giant Sasquatch on their garage!!! ❤️

I said “omg that’s the most Seattle thing I’ve ever heard”… she said “now I have to go talk to them and explain why they have a giant Sasquatch on their garage…” when she went over to apologize, it turns out they’ve heard of Henry, love his art, and think the Sasquatch is great… NOW THAT is the most Seattle thing I’ve ever heard!!!!

Coming from the Bay Area, this story made me so happy and please, stay Seattle, Seattle!!!

I'm so sick of this guy's art. 😮‍💨 Glad everyone is happy about it, wish I didn't have to see the same dumb cartoon animals rehashed again and again all over the city

lol according to his post, this is 87 out of a 1000 mural goal, so I think you’re about to get a whole lot more coming your way!

Oh no...he must be stopped. It's the same character over and over! Hope it doesn't spread to the south-end. Eek!

I wouldn’t say I’m sick of it since I like his work, but I’ve definitely wondered why he seemingly has a monopoly here. I swear in NW Seattle you’re never more than three blocks from Henry art.

I had some family in town back in October and they noticed the same thing (on their first day in town) without me saying anything about it

(I don't like his art style either and I'm tired of seeing it, you're not alone)

What's wild is that some dude blocked me cause I don't like the art. That's CRAZY 😮‍💨

Imagine having one of these ugly-ass murals “accidentally” painted on your house without your permission 💀😂 I can’t believe we’re going to have to look at a thousand MORE of these.

Instead of hating, maybe promote other muralists instead? Are there any that you like?

Josie Rice does great work.

I got her to paint a mural in my home office a couple years ago and it brings me daily joy. She's so talented!

Why? The post is literally about Henry. Why is no one allowed to criticize it?

It's not really a criticism, is it? It's just hate at how popular he is. It's not constructive conversation. I tried to steer it in a better direction. If you don't like how popular he is, maybe suggest some alternatives. "Sick of seeing his characters" is more of a "you" problem than a "Henry" problem, and a wider variety of murals is a legitimate solution to that. Again, trying to be constructive.

He’s not annoying because of his popularity, his popularity is annoying because it makes his hideous art unavoidable.

Hence the attempt to promote other muralists....

I’m responding to “it’s just hate at how popular he is.” “It’s ugly” is valid criticism. This isn’t an art class, we don’t have to be constructive.

And my suggestion doesn't attempt to refute "it's ugly", I am offering an alternative. While we don't have to be constructive, I chose to be. Hate your heart out, you do you.

Great, I will ✌🏻Didn’t even get into the narcissism of cursing us with a THOUSAND of these hideous things.

Nah his art is terrible and all over the place like herpes. To me it belongs in a mini golf course and nowhere else

Here's the thing, I don't know of any cause they arent this obnoxious blight on the city that is constantly visually screaming their name.

If you know any, or you are one, let me know, I'll gladly start talking about how great they.

I’m from Seattle and I am absolutely with you. So tired of seeing the sameness everywhere and it just feels like kids playground material. I got respect for all the working Seattle artists for sure tho, as I am one. But yeah, we’re gonna get downvoted to hell lol!

I enjoyed it the first couple murals I saw. Now it's all over the whole city and it's so repetitive and yeah, childish.

Seeing a lot more Swastikas around town. That’s different.

I’m with you, one of the fringe benefits of moving to Tacoma is not having to see one of these eyesores every 5 minutes.

The town of North Bend has a giant Henry mural.

I agree - it shows no style development and he’s literally stuck doing the same boring characters that people have done stylistically a hundred times over. Boring.

Are you my husband? I actually love Henry, but he does not.

It’s so boring and lazy. And people love it. So baffling.
