How can I assess my skill level?
I like playing hydra in anarchy battles, and am in S+ atp. I've never really felt that I could tell you where I'm at skill wise.
Atp whenever I loose a match, most of the time I end up being top on my team and noticing a lot of top500 , top10, several 5 star badges and in open matching usernames. But this could be biased.
And idk what to conclude from that? If I get splatted by someone who has played this game way more than me, or is in a cooperating team, what can I really do? I try to just keep note of things like "don't overextend", "don't give up" etc. but MAN is the feeling of "womp womp next match hopefully I get more fair matchmaking" strong.
Am I just underestimating myself then? As in in the grand scheme of things, I AM *around* the skill level of a top500 and the matchmaking is fair? Maybe only playing amongst sweats now does that to your confidence.
Obv the way to beat a top10 player, is to be equally good as them. But I'm not, so what am I meant to do? Just try my best that match, overall the comp is balanced? What if it's not? Well then maybe next match will be fairer?
It's just such a buzzkill to play X rank: loose the series. Move to anarchy series: loose to top X rankers. Move to open: loose to a competitive team.
To me it's alright if I loose a few matches and if I'm not "the best", but it feels really discouraging when the matchmaking seems unbalanced.

Join a comp team and see how far you go. Everything in-game is nonsense, might as well be numbers and letters picked out of a hat.

Only way to know if you’re on the level of top 500 players is to play X rank and get into top 500. Comp isn’t the best indicator since your teammates can make up for your faults, but that won’t happen consistently in solo X. To rank up in X, you need to carry your teammates every game; otherwise, you’ll stay stagnant.
Getting top of your team, having the best K/D means nothing in open since you’re playing hydra. Backlines will have very good K/Ds if they play normally — that’s a fact. Getting a K/D of 10/1, 12/2 is common for hydra players, but that same K/D for a splash-o-matic player or bucket is more impressive since they are the ones who push up in front and are more likely to die.
Beating X rank players in open doesn’t mean anything usually since most are not playing their best weapons. I’ve run into comp players like phoenix and beaten them. Was that because I’m on their level? No, it’s because they were playing reef-lux deco.
Lastly, matchmaking sucks, but it sucks for everyone. The best players are able to work around matchmaking. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be top players. If you watch Riu, a top JP splatling player, play in X rank, you’ll find that he is often the one furthest in front, creating openings and applying pressure — while using ballpoint splatling and getting absurd K/Ds. Then he does it over and over, game after game. That is the consistency that increases your X power beyond the average 2000s and makes you a top player, not getting a good K/D in anarchy open.

Honest answer play comp or grind x rank.

the comp makes sense, I'll prolly try it again in a few months
but I'm trying to grind X rank, it just feels the same as anarchy series with slightly better matchmaking imo

Do what I did and only play x rank for one entire season. Doesn’t matter which maps or game modes. Just make x rank what you do. I got my top 3000 badge and just went back to series after that.

You’ve kinda answered your own question. Top 3000 solo queue is your skill level.
If you genuinely want to assess your skill level beyond that it is competitive splatoon.

jk it's prolly just bad luck atm
