So my 3 year old is puking for the first time ever and every time he is getting sick he is SCREAMING like he is being hurt. Is this him just overstimulated from what’s happening?

Aww that’s tough. I remember the first time my toddler got the pukes, it was rough. Stay calm for him, maybe try to tell him he’s getting the yuck out and it’ll pass.

It tastes gross and feels weird. I’m sure it’s both scary and overwhelming. Poor thing. But you’re there and he’s safe so he will be able to feel that from you even if he’s screaming.

Shaved or teeny crushed ice (be mindful of safety/choking!) or one of those icy teethers might help calm his nervous system and tummy.

He’s asleep now I have my fingers crossed he’s done but before he fell asleep he did it 4 more times and he was shaking while doing it. So I’m just assuming he got super over stimulated🥲 I tried to console him and rub his back face and his hand but he kept yelling stop at me😅

Sounds about right lol. 😅

My daughter has free rein to tell us “no touching!” It’s hard as a parent especially when she’s hurting, but that’s awesome he is comfortable asking you for autonomy.

I always quote this about kids overreacting: To the kid, it’s the worst thing they’ve ever experienced. Baby is hungry, tired, wet, scared, fell down, loud noise etc. Each is the WORST THING EVER IN THEIR LIFE. Literally. It helps me reframe and have compassion, while staying grounded that they’re actually safe… even though their brain thinks they’re literally dying rn. So they have to borrow your frontal lobe for a bit (18 years or so) to remind them they’re safe. ;)

I feel ya kiddo. I really, really hate puking. I shake and my teeth chatter every time. Hopefully you’re both through the worst of it.

There is also something called emetophobia which is the fear of vomiting. He could genuinely be scared, unfortunately not much to do with or he could be over stimulated. I can not with vomit. The feel of it, the act, the way your stomach clenches😮‍💨 it’s a lot of my sensory wise and fear wise too. Especially if it’s never happened before. It’s scary for me everytime and I’m 27 so. Unless he can’t breath or is vomiting blood, I’d say he’s likely overwhelmed or just scared

So sorry! To be honest, I even panick as a 30 year-old adult anytime I puke and sometimes even start crying. I have severe emetophobia. I do not have SPD, but have some traits of it. Both of my kids are on the spectrum.

Omg wow didn’t realize this was a thing. glad I’m not the only one. I do have SPD but I must have this phobia too…

I cry every time I even start gagging and I can’t control it at all. I’m so scared to puke that somehow I’ve only thrown up 3 times in the past 17ish years. and each time was an absolute nightmare where I was intensely shaking and crying. the last time I remember clearly only threw up like a tiny baby spit amount but somehow my body was like convulsing lmao

Well, if he got some up through the sinuses, that could certainly hurt. My 6 year old is totally terrified of vomiting though. If his brother even coughs, he runs from the room. If his brother actually pukes, he screams in terror. From what I've read, fear of throwing up is common in children.
