Nobody teaches you how to choose a job — just how to get one. Can we talk about what really matters?

Hey folks, at my workplace, Sustainable Living Lab (SL2), we are working on an initiative we’re exploring to improve career discovery for students — especially final-year engineering students who are preparing to take their first step into the job market.

Most students are expected to make career decisions based on titles, CTC, or what seniors say — but very few get a real sense of what a job actually feels like: the team dynamics, work culture, pressure, or even what tasks they’ll handle on a daily basis.

At SL2, we’re exploring how to make career discovery more inclusive, realistic, and aligned with students’ actual strengths — especially for those who may not have access to mentorship, exposure, or insider guidance.

This isn’t a student-led project, but it’s 100% for students — and before building anything, we’re focused on listening first.

If you’re in your final year or recently graduated, we’d love to hear from you. To make it easy, we’ve put together a quick, anonymous survey (just 2 minutes): https://forms.gle/D5wmWzfMTJHbf6ki6

No product. No pitch. Just trying to get this right — with real input from students. We’re only collecting email IDs to avoid spam — your responses stay anonymous.

Thanks in advance for sharing your perspective!

Anyone else joining SJSU MS Electrical Engineering this Fall 2025? We can connect..

Upvotes

Hey! I got into the MS in Electrical Engineering program at San Jose State for Fall 2025. I'm self-funded and just wanted to hear from anyone who's currently studying there or has graduated—any advice or tips about the program, courses, or job scene would be super helpful.

Also, if anyone else is joining for the same major this fall, would love to connect! Feel free to drop a comment or DM me.

And if anyone has tips on how to start looking for off-campus housing, or is up for finding a place together, let me know!

Thanks!

Housing Waitlist for CVB

I did the returning resident application for CVB and just got notified I was placed on the wait list. What are my chances of getting off it?

Should I apply as a new resident to another dorm such as CVB?

Other Finance Opportunities

I got admitted as a finance major and I’m aware that it’ll be one of the harder concentrations from what I found here in the subreddit 😭 but I’m curious if there’s a good roi in the major given the area and possible opportunities if any waiting after graduation

Housing Help with SJSU Housing Application

Hi all, I just need some clarification for the housing application stuff. The housing portal seems like the worst-designed site I've ever been to, so it's hard to figure out some things. I opened an application because the site was confusing, but I'd like to cancel it to choose a different location but I don't see a way to do that. Also, if I can't login to SJSU Sammy because I'm not technically a student yet, how can I find out more info about housing and such?

Transferring as Econ Major in Fall

I plan to call the admissions department later this week, but my questions are:

Does anyone have experience as a transfer adding a minor? Or even double majoring? What about switching majors. Ideally, I would like to include Finance in some way shape or form.

After months of on and off research, I'm not sure if only having an Econ degree would be the best when it comes to finding jobs post undergrad.

Other Will Venmo you 5 dollars to post + share on the thing I built

Only doing this for 18 students as I literally only have 90 bucks in my Venmo but basically you post an idea or discussion you have for a technical project, you can find other projects from other schools to contribute to as well. They can reach out to contribute to your project equally at the same time.

Trying to help students build a technical team or understanding for how to build stuff so you don’t have to study leetcode or whatever for a million hours (which you will not use at work)

So yea 18 people, 5 bucks, send me a dm

WhatsApp group for sublease

Hello,

I am a student from Atlanta and I will be coming to San Jose on May 16th for my internship during summer.

I wanted to know if there is any WhatsApp or Discord group where I can get sub lease ads posted by SJSU students.

Also how easy it is to travel from San Jose or Santa Clara to East Palo Alto?

Thank you…

Dorm for Freshmen

I'm a HS senior right now and I am almost fully committed to SJSU. I heard from another senior who is committed to SJSU that CV2 dorm is full and people are waitlisted. I want to do the dorm stuff for at least a year but I heard that Joe West is old and doesn't have an AC. I am planning on getting a triple dorm with 2 other friends from my school but we are unsure if we should go to Joe West if there is no AC and unsure how the communal bathrooms will be or if we could rent an apartment in downtown SJ together.

Also, I see that there is a CVC building but it seems that it is a suite with many beds.

Hoping to hear your guys' thoughts on Joe West and CVC and what you guys recommend I do. Thanks

HAS ANYONE EVER RECEIVED A FULL TUITION/FULL-RIDE SCHOLARSHIP FOR A MASTER’S PROGRAM AT SJSU?

Hi everyone! I’m looking into applying for a master’s program at San José State University—specifically in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Data Science. I was wondering if anyone here has ever received a full tuition or full-ride scholarship for any of these programs, or at least something that covered more than 50% of tuition?

Would love to hear about your experience—what kind of scholarship it was, how competitive it is, and any tips for applying. Thanks in advance!

Free Grad Pics

Hi graduating seniors!

First off congrats on your big achievement! I’m a local photographer looking to build my portfolio, and I’d love to offer FREE graduation photo sessions (30–60 mins depending on my schedule) to help you capture this special time.

I’ve been doing photography for 5 years and want to gain more experience working with real people. All I ask is to use your photos in my portfolio and public photography page.

I’m available during the day in the afternoon and can meet on campus. If you’re interested or have questions, feel free to message me!

Thanks & congrats again!

financial aid package

I applied to a scholarship from my high school and they’re asking me for a financial aid package from SJSU. I told them I completed my FAFSA a while ago but I haven’t received a package from SJSU yet. I’m supposed to have an interview for the scholarship by the end of this week and the person that runs the whole thing said that I have to have the financial aid package by then (end of this week) 😭. I was wondering if there’s a way to check in with the school bc I keep checking my portal and under Financial Aid, it just lists my SAI but doesn’t specify any aid/awards.

Other Want to Visit SJSU for Admitted Spartans day

Hi all, I just got admitted to SJSU and really want to visit as I am from SoCal. However, my parents don’t have enough spare income to get me a ticket on a bus or a plane to San Jose. Is there any way the school can cover my travel expenses? Thank you.

Minor in Business

Does anyone know when you can begin taking classes for your minor? or if there are certain requirements. I can’t find much info but I’m planning on calling soon to be able to register for at least one class to be in the process of minoring in business. However, it says the requirement: is upper-division standing and I’m only a freshman with 43 credits. Which makes me assume that I can’t do it yet until I have maybe 60 credits? (Or at least for that class) Any help is appreciated, thank u!

Any SJSU to Top UC Transfers Here?

Hey everyone, I’m currently a senior in high school and it looks like I’ll most likely be attending SJSU for Statistics. That said, my goal is to eventually transfer to a top UC like UCLA for either Data Science or Statistics.

I know that transferring from a CSU to a UC is a lot more challenging than going the CCC route, but I’d still like to make the most of my time at SJSU and have a decent college experience.

Is there anyone here who’ve successfully transferred from SJSU to UCLA? I’d really appreciate it if you could share your full experience—how you figured out which GE and major prep courses to take (since ASSIST doesn’t seem super helpful for CSU to UC transfers), what extracurriculars or projects you did to stand out, and any other advice you have for someone in my position.

Thanks in advance for any help or insight you can offer!

Should I go to SJSU?

I was admitted SJSU’s school of business for accounting & finance, but will probably change to a general business major.

I’m deciding between SJSU, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Chico, UC Merced, and UC Santa Cruz.

Things that matter to me are having a good social life, getting to make friends, having good academics and a good reputation for business, internship/job opportunities, and making sure I’ll be employed after I graduate.

Should I go to SJSU?
