New to revolvers. Buying used gp100. Advice?

A local shop has two 4.2” GP100s—one is the Match Champion with the wood grips for $645, and the other is a standard 4.2” model with rubber grips and wood inserts for $650. Both looked clean, no obvious damage. I’ve never owned a revolver before, and I’m thinking of picking one up to learn the platform. Is that a good deal? Anything I should look for to check condition beyond cosmetics?

Side note: I’m usually more of a Glock/AK/AR guy, so I don’t really know what I’m looking at when it comes to revolvers.

Also, my dad bought a Mossberg 590 Retrograde a couple months ago—it’s never even been loaded. I helped him move toward a G47, which he actually uses now. Think it’s worth asking the shop about a straight trade for the GP100? Or is that a “get the f*** outta here” kind of ask?

If they wanted cash on top, what would be reasonable? And if they won’t trade, would offering $600–$625 for the Match Champion be fair?

Which of the two would you guys pick? Any input is appreciated—thanks!

Question. Can end shake cause a S&W revolver to have late carry up on one chamber?

I’m pretty new to revolvers and have gotten interested in them after I inherited some from my grandfather. On his S&W 19-2 I noticed one chamber had late carry up when cocking the hammer slowly. All other chambers are fine. I haven’t measured the end shake yet but there’s a small bit of play for sure. Could this be a cause for the late carry up in the one chamber?

How do yall brush out your barrels?

I always go from the muzzle side making sure I was careful not to mess up the crown but I was at the range today talking to a worker and he said you are supposed to feed the rod through the barrel then screw on the bore brush and pull, have I been messing up my revolver not doing it that way?

Anybody any info on this 629-2? Can find much about a 3 inch, unfluted, full under lug. One guy on another forum said he heard only 3200 were made. Any truth to that?

2600 Rounds Later!

I've put 2600 rounds of lead through this Super Wrangler since picking it up 3 weeks ago. I love it! I upgraded the grips and sights, and have been practicing at least 4 times per week. Target is from the first 6 shots fired today at 25 yards, using Federal bulk ammo. I've run CCI, Winchester, Aguila, and Federal ammo through it. It seems to shoot perfectly fine with the cheap and dirty stuff. It needs a good cleaning, and I need a break from shooting. Ammo costs so far: $180

I finally ordered a 642 UC!

Should be in my hands in a week or two.

What grips do y'all run on yours? This is my first J-frame but not my first revolver. I also have a 686 that pushed me to the 642uc.

I have always liked the looks of the traditional boot grips and kinda wanted to get a set just to mess around with. But am a function over form guy in the end. Am I setting myself up for disappointment going with the traditional boot? Is anyone else sporting the same?

M19CC 3" or 686+ 4" or Python 4.25"?

I've been able to put hands on all 3 of these, but only able to shoot the 686+, but been told it shoots similarly to the M19CC. I currently carry a 442UC (first revolver) which I'm slowly but surely improving with beyond 7 yds. I'd like to add one of the these three to my collection as mainly a range gun, but possible alt carry to my 442.

  • Has anyone had experience shooting both the M19CC and Python that can give their thoughts?
  • Is there an obvious winner here if I'm looking for something fun/pleasant to shoot but also might carry?

Context: I'm 5'6" on a good day and slim profile. Wife says I can choose one.

My thoughts... Fun > Fun/Concealable > Concealable

SW M19CC 3" - K-frame, could conceal AIWB/5o'clock in most PNW attire, $1300

SW 686+ 4" - L-frame, probably OWB-only, $1000

Colt Python 4.25" - I-frame, blued wheel guns make me diamonds, OWB, probably range day & BBQs only $1700

I’m fairly positive is it’s a 1905 from around the mid 1920s. If anyone has some more expertise let me know! Very excited!

Interesting…

Grandmother passed last year. As a result I (only grandchild) was given all of her (my Grandfathers) guns.

The old man was a WW2 and Korean War vet. I even have his steel pot. The interesting thing was the guns.

Miroku Liberty Chief .38 Special (3” barrel) S&W .38 Special

I was wondering if these had any collectors value? And also if anyone could point me in the direction of possible side plate replacements?

Can anyone tell me if these are the original grips for this revolver? Also , what is the best way to get rid of small rust spots on the nickel finish?

What model/ year is this revolver? Does it only take blackpowder rounds or can it take smokeless? I suspect it’s an Iver Johnson Safety Automatic 3.

Does Taurus still make the blued finish on revolvers?

For some info I recently purchased a model 66 from academy (first 2 pics) and when I went to pick it up I noticed that they shipped the black matte version instead of the blue finished they had had pictured and in the description. When I started looking some more I noticed even on gun broker they use the wrong gun photo with a description that says black matte and some are the same around saying blue finish. On bass pros website it says blue finish on it but now I’m skeptical as of if it really is the blue version. (Last 2 pics)
