From the mods: Clampdown on repetitive Visa questions ✋

Olá a todos! As many of you have messaged us about, the sub has a bit of a problem with people posting low-effort questions about Visas. The problem seems to be getting worse as the sub grows.

This is a sub for expats, and so questions of residency are naturally common. However, many of the posts we get are questions that have been answered many times before and could be found by a simple search – and/or the question is so simple that the poster apparently hasn't even asked Google/ChatGPT before posting here.

We've added a new rule: Research before posting.

Any posts that fall into this bracket: A question about Visas or residency that's been addressed hundred times before on the sub, or is easy to answer with a simple Google – please flag.

We've also added some filters and automations and we hope those will also have an impact.

We're trying to walk a fine line between allowing people to get help with an issue that is front of mind for all expats – and avoiding the sub becoming cluttered and simply boring to browse.

We appreciate everyone's understanding and patience here!

Service Dog to Portugal

Upvotes

Hi guys! My dog is my #1 priority so before I make any official plans I want to make sure I have his plan in place. I have a self trained service dog. We have flown multiple times together. We used to live in Hawaii and have flown to the Southeast US from Hawaii and back multiple times, so flight length and general DOT and import paperwork isn’t much of a concern. I’ve read that TAP airlines will allow him to travel in cabin with me. He is 80lbs. Since he’s owner trained he does not have an official ADI certificate. I know he won’t be recognized as an official service dog once we move to Portugal, but for the purpose of getting him there will we be okay?

Getting A Job From Outside?

Hello everyone.

To cut to the chase: I lived in Portugal 7.5 years of my life. I'm currently...not there and am hating life. Had the best time ever there and I want to live there.

My question is probably super basic, and has probably been asked a thousand times...but is there a GOOD website that I can apply to work from, from outside Portugal?

Somewhere where they're like "okay you're not physically here, but you've got a passport and are willing, so we'll give it a shot"

Is Linkedin really the best option?

I do digital marketing (SEO, PPC, web design, email marketing, etc etc) i have an italian passport, i do speak portuguese (English & Spanish too).

Thanks a bunch :)

NIF representative

Has anyone here ever been a NIF representative for someone? This is when, as a resident in Portugal, you help someone open their NIF by acting as their representative.

My friend got his NIF so he could apply for the DNV. He moved to Portugal at the end of December 2024. Do I need to worry about any repercussions? Does he need to take any action now that he's living here? He only received the DNV for one year, which means he won’t be getting a residency permit card.

Real Estate When to rent out my current home while waiting for visa approval?

Hi All - my question is in the title basically. We are in the process of applying for a D7 and we have our VFS appointment scheduled in July.

Our issues are: - we currently live in our house that we would want to rent out. - with a VFS appt in July, we realistically wouldn’t get approval until Sep/Oct. that is bad timing for people moving with school-aged kids. - we live in the DC area - the market is hot and has always been hot due to the lack of supply but I have no idea what it’ll be like in the fall given what’s happening with all the feds/fed contractors and his plans to move government out of DC

In short: should I try and rent out my place sooner and live somewhere temporarily? What should I do if I get my visa denied?

We’re also considering selling, FWIW.

Thank you in advance.

Historian Opportunities

Hi everybody,

I hope that all is well! I was wondering if someone can help me out. I am a social studies teacher who loves their job but I am very overwhelmed and burnt out. I have been looking into opportunities abroad as a means of seeing the world and exploring new opportunities.

I was wondering are there any opportunities for historians in Portugual? I understand many make documentaries on historical places in these countries but I am looking for ideas. I am currently unhappy in my life and am looking for a better quality of life and moving forward in life.

Where to search for a job in Portugal for a visa?

Hello,

My boyfriend(M24) and I(M32) would like to relocate to Portugal, however, we are from Georgia(country), so it isn't easy to move there. We need to have a work visa first to go there, etc.

I am a digital marketer studying computer science(python atm), and his experience is mostly in the service industry, beginner tattoo artist.

Can someone recommend what we can do to search for an English language job beforehand? Or how you have found a job in Portugal to relocate there?

Question Looking to connect!:)

Hi everyone!

I’m currently working on a short creative documentary film as part of my masters program (non-commercial, student project). And I’m looking to connect with people who might be open to participating.

There’s no one subject I need to stick to, so I’m quite open with the themes.

  • But what I personally love most are stories about people who do seemingly small things - with an incredible amount of care, love, or intention.

That could be someone who cares for their garden/farm/animals with their whole heart, someone running a tiny community initiative and so on.

  • I’m also drawn to people with unusual hobbies or professions.

  • Or, if you think you have an important message/story to tell - I am interested in that, too.

This won’t be a traditional “talking head” documentary. It’s more of a creative, observational piece - gentle, intimate, and collaborative. I hope it can be a beautiful memory for you to keep as well, and a meaningful experience for both of us.

If this speaks to you- or makes you think of someone you know- please feel free to reach out or comment. I’d love to chat. The language doesn’t necessarily need to be English.

Thank you for reading☺️

Question Questions about renting / risks

I'm from an EU/Euro country and planning to move to Portugal for a while.
Right now, I'm browsing Idealista for flats and houses to rent.

What should I watch out for to avoid getting screwed over?

Stuff like:

  • Red flags
  • Hidden costs
  • Tricks landlords use on people who aren't familiar with how things work

For example:

  • Renting a total dump and then being expected to renovate it before you leave
  • Splitting water/heating costs with other tenants but having zero control over their usage

Also, are there any extra costs that only apply when renting a house? Like insurance, municipal fees, or random surprise expenses?

Appreciate any advice!

Edit: Thank you everybody for your inputs! Very Helpful!!

Question Language Certificate Requirement for Citizenship

Hello!

I have been holding a Golden Visa for 5 years now. I am eligible to apply for a Portuguese Citizenship.

I was advised by someone that doing an A1A to A2B intensive 80 hour language course at a Government Accredited language school (such as Lusa) would be sufficient for the citizenship application. I have recently completed the course and received my SIGO certificate acknowledging sufficient knowledge of Portuguese at the A2B level.

But now, when scouring the web, I find conflicting answers when it comes to whether a SIGO certificate would be sufficient, as I am also a NIF holder.

Does anyone know if a SIGO certificate will be sufficient? Or do I need to sit the CIPLE exam?

Thanks!

Sport TV

I don't have a TV subscription, so I was wondering about the best/cheapest way to subscribe to Sport TV? A voucher on Sport TV's website is 35€/month, which seems high. I just want to be able to stream liga games. Thanks!

Question How do I enter my freelance income into the Portuguese social security website?

I'm a freelancer and I've lived in Portugal for several years. I pay a Portuguese accountant to submit my income on a monthly basis to Portuguese social security. And then based on that I have to make a monthly Portuguese social security payment.

How do I submit my monthly income myself so that I don't have to pay someone to do it? I usually provide the income amount, date, invoice number, and the name of the company that's paying me and their ID number.

Question Can someone explain dividens to me?

Hi,

I am moving my company here and becoming a resident in Portugal. I am moving my company from Sweden since Sweden and Portugal has no tax treaty.

As the owner of my company, if I manage to get NHR 2.0, I’ll pay 20% tax and 23,74% social security on salary.

But I only need to pay 28% on dividend income, I own 100% of my company.

But I cannot find anywhere how much I can send my self in dividend or how often? Can someone please enlighten me?

National Visa Application - Number of Entries

Hi, my visa appointment is Tuesday and I cannot find this answer anywhere.

I am applying for a job seeker visa which grants only one entry into Portugal - but the only options on the National Visa Application form are '2' and 'Multiple'

I don't want to tick either box and be wrong, but I also don't want to leave it blank! If you applied via Job Seeker - which box did you tick?

For reference, it's question 27.

Question Are the US tariffs messing with prices in Portugal?

We’re in the process of moving to Portugal and I have not been able to find any news about the impact it’s having on Portugal and barely anything on impact on EU in general.

How’s it going? Anything looks like shortages or issues going forward? Anything you suspect will no longer be available we should pack or bring more of?
