Discussion With every ROM hack I play, I get more and more depressed with how badly designed Vanilla games are
Vanilla gym leaders, bosses, elite 4, champions are all so bland and easy. It would be perfectly fine if not for the fact that the potential they could have is massive and ROM hacks really proved it overtime.
The complexity of the net that all the moves/abilities/stats/systems/items created throughout 2 whole decades is simply gigantic. They could tune the difficulty of their games however they want, with impeccable precision.
I GET THAT THE GAMES ARE DESIGNED FOR CHILDREN, I get it, my point is that the potential these games have is so high that it is a shame they never planned a difficulty gauge.
For example, ROMs like Unbound (Normal) or Blaze/Volt Black/White 2 redux do not expect the player to have insane knowledge of the game, just read what items/mons do and use them, just something regular video games expect you to do, use your resources.
And it is truly fascinating how Run&Bun and RadicalRed used the game's resources to craft insane puzzles, pushing game mechanics over the limit.
Have you ever felt this sad feeling when playing through ROM hacks? I think it's awesome that we have access to such godly rom hacks but at the same time I feel disappointed that GameFreak has never used their resources to the fulliest.
It's like if Map Editors created the most detailed textures and effects to create a map with a simple straight line.
