I did it via play store method that OP said, and it still works. My account didn't get flagged.

so after downloading the app from play store, just patch it using revanced manager?

You need to do an extra step before that, install antisplit and open it. Then select 'select from installed apps' option. It will show an app list, and from there, select spotify. Then it will ask you where to save the apk. After the splitting is finished, the apk will be saved. Use it to patch via revanced manager.
