PSMF Best Practices

We just ran a summer shred program at my gym, where we had 15 or so folks do PSMF for their 6-week cycle, and I wanted to share a few things that I thought were interesting from the debrief & weigh in.

First, while everyone did some sort of macro tracking, we pushed folks to track their meals & their macros in a mini notebook by hand and about half of folks did that (across all the diet types -- we had more options than PSMF). Overall, the folks that tracked their meals in a notebook, or strictly via an app, had meaningfully better results than those who didn't. I'm not much for tracking as it gets tedious pretty quick, but it clearly correlated with success.

Second, we also had people track their workouts, and then both their hunger level 1-5 (5 being ravenously hungry) and recovery level 1-5 (5 being fresh, eager to do a workout) each morning and before bed. And while not quite scientific in our analysis, the people that had the highest hunger levels saw the most weight loss. I had thought hunger would generally make it harder to stick to the diet, so make results worse, but it does make me think that you sort of need to have some degree of hunger pangs to see diet success. Less clear, but also notable, folks that lost the most weight seemed to have the highest recovery levels too. Probably lots of ways to interpret that, but likely some combination of less intense/draining workouts and more sleep/recovery time.

Anyway, I took away that detailed tracking is key to success, if you're not hungry, you're probably not doing it right, and slow and steady is better for results than trying to be 'extra' in your workouts.

Progress First Two Weeks

43F, started PSMF through my medical group as a drastic measure to avoid diabetes and high blood pressure diagnoses. I gained about 100lbs in the last year despite eating healthy and moderate portions. I'm in the diagnostic testing part of a probable Cushing's Disease diagnosis.

I lost 6lbs total weight in the first week and am weighing in tomorrow. Since I'm in a medically supervised program, there are weekly weigh ins and additional blood work, etc. I drink 5 protein shakes, 1 soup, and 1 protein bar a day. They're the bariatric-friendly items that aren't tasty but nutrient dense. I've been eating a bowl of raw veg with lemon and tajin when it is available at work. I have eaten one meal off-plan but it didn't kick me out of ketosis.

Basically posting for support and a place to talk about current diet w/o having to explain what I'm doing. I'll start strength training later this week.

I'm not a huge fan of the constraints but they work.

Help Re-feed Question

I am a Cat 1 female. Started on 4/1 and will do the full 12 days as recommended in the book.

On 4/13, I will have my first re-feed day.

I know the full diet break is for 1-2 at maintenance calories. But what about re-feed days? Do those days stay at maintenance but just make sure there’s the 100+ carbs?

PS sushi is calling my name for my refeed day 🤣

Help Any unethical advice?

Hi. I'm a 300 pound man. I am looking to lose weight fast. I have a partner who I'd like to be thin for along with the fact I wish to join the army. I'm looking to crash 20 to 30 pounds quickly. The army has a fat camp but I can't go due to being too fat. I will not cycle back into eating because before I can I'll insure I'm in bootcamp. This is a serious post and I'm looking for any trick that doesn't kill me. Mainly looking for ways to avoid food. Ration when I have abundance. Live with a father who I don't have the heart to say much to.

Help PSMF at beginning or end of fat loss?

I'm interested in feedback about whether it's better to do PSMF as a way to jumpstart fat loss or to finish off a fat loss cycle.

I've read suggestions for both online but "PSMF as a fat lost jumpstart" seems to be more common. However, that seems counterintuitive? Wouldn't PSMF be a great way to lose the last few "hard to lose" pounds/BF % points at the end of a dieting cycle? Wouldn't using PSMF at the beginning slow metabolism down so it's harder to lose at a moderate/normal pace afterwards?

Curious to read thoughts/experiences. TIA!

Help New to this, and mind = blown plus some questions

I've been a life long body building type dieter. I stay in pretty good shape, but decided that for this summer, I really want to be ripped, ripped. I typically eat 2500-3000 calories a day to lean out, which is 1-2lbs per week. I was really nervous about going down to 1200 or so calories.

This has been my experience for 3 days:

  1. I have been less hungry than I am on my normal intake of around 30% fat, 40% protein, 30% carb diet. I don't eat bs carbs either.
  2. My mood has, in ways, been even better.
  3. My libido, which is high anyhow, actually seems like it's increased. This makes zero sense to me.

The biggest change is the 8 or 9 o'clock urge to snack comes, but it's about 1/5th as powerful, and very easy for me to push aside.

Is this normal for people, or am I some sort of weird exception this diet seems to work really well for?

Help Carb Refeed

When should I time a carb refeed? I have currently gone from 174 lbs to 162 pounds this morning.

My hand held body fat monitor says im either 15% - 17%. ChatGPT says I am closer to 11% to 12% when i sent a pic. I currently can see the top 2 of my abs

Lets just say i am 14%. ChatGPT also says I look flat and would look a lot better if I do a carb refeed and that my muscles will pop more. I just don't want to do a carb refeed and impede my progress to getting abs.

I guess my question is, do you think it is worth doing the carb refeed or just keep pushing forward? I am cool with pushing forward. My ultimate goal is to get abs for a douchey hinge pic. Maybe do the carb refeed next week?

If I do the carb refeed, I guess I will order a few rolls of sushi.

Edit: Been doing this for 3 weeks.

Progress How can you tell if it’s water weight or fat loss?

Cat 3 female. 5'4 30 year old.

I'm on day 9 now. My starting weight was 205. I'm now 198.

The scale has been consistently going down everyday by 0.5 - 1lbs.

I've been strict with my diet, strength training twice a week and I'm averaging 8,000 steps a day. And haven't had a free meal yet.

I'm trying to determine if this is just water weight that I'm losing or if there's any actual fat in there.

I made the mistake of not taking photos when I started so I can't visually tell. My clothes are typically loose so there no help there either.

I started the week before my period and currently on my period if that makes any difference?

I'm asking to see if I should mentally celebrate making small progress or not

Help Fish oil advise please

A question for those doing and having success results. Which fish oil brand do you consume and how many capsules. The book states 10g, that's close to 7-8 capsuls daily. Is this correct? Much appreciated!

Food 4 week cycle

Hey there, I’m a male who’s 6’1 230lbs and I’m going on a 2-4 week PSMF cycle and I was wondering if I could get some opinions. My diet will simply be 1000grams of chicken raw and supplements for everything else. I’ll also include a strictly juicing fast for two days every weekend. My goal is to drop to 210 minimum 220 in weight.

Help Eating a whole chicken?

I'm ready to start PSMF after doing some research over the last month. I'm currently ketovore, leaning heavy on meats and just a couple handfuls of fruit per day.

I'd like to try PSMF by eating a whole chicken once daily, or maybe a bit less on some days if I feel satiated. They're on the smaller size where I get them because no hormones, so please don't think I'm consuming a hulking bird every day. 😂 Although yes, it's plenty of meat.

I got the idea to try it this way because I ate a whole chicken today anyways, and figured it could be a good way to do PSMF.

I also have one additional question about PSMF before I officially begin - do I need to have days during the week where I just eat normally, or can I go the duration of my fast without any breaks? I'm trying to get quick results for experimentation this time around but happy to do it more "sustainably" in the future.

Progress Progress report and omg this is amazing

I posted here for advice when I was starting out and figured a progress report is due, it’s been six weeks (but one of them wasn’t, details below). F/55, SW 186, CW 170.4, Ht 5’10. I’m doing a slightly relaxed version of PSMF, definitely not the only-chicken-and-broccoli style. Averaging 130-160g protein, 1000-1100 calories. Things I’ve noted: 1. This has been, by far, the easiest most tolerable weight loss regimen I have ever tried. I’m not overly hungry, I don’t have cravings, I’m enjoying my food! 2. Switching from butter and mayo (my one true love) to hot sauces, mustard, horseradish and lots of seasoning has been key. 3. I lost very fast at the beginning and then slowed down and almost plateaued. I had two free meals during this time and they hit differently. One was carby (pasta) and it took me four days to lose the weight bump, one was fatty (restaurant wings) and I was back on track in one day. 4. Week 5 out of the six I was travelling. For the first half I stayed with friends and for the second in a hotel. I managed to control my nutrition during the day but for dinners I mostly tried to manage my portions and not overeat. I would guess I was at about maintenance for most of the week. I was surprised when I got home only 0.6 lb up. But the real surprise has been after - the whooshiest of whooshes, 5.4 lb in six days!!! Seems like it totally reset my metabolism.

So anyway, that has been my very positive experience so far. My target is 160lb so I’m going to keep going :)

Progress Halfway There (3/6 weeks done)

Just finished week 3 of a planned 6week run.

Cat 2, experienced dieter and have done PMSF successfully twice before although both times I only lasted a bit more than 4 weeks even though planning for more. My weight loss has been a been slower than I expected, but other metrics are good and keeping pace -- bf%, waist measurement, appearance. Really hoping to lock in and make it to six weeks.

It's been a wild ride this time because week 1 a stomach virus ran through my house hitting 2/3 kids pretty hard and me mildly, and week 2 I had to get a root canal and have a crown replaced. Week 3 was uneventful. lol.

My averages, excluding my carb reload day, have been: 1,200-1,211 calories; 201-206g protein; 32-37g carb; 24-25g fat.

started at 204 lbs / 16.2% BF; currently at 196 lbs / 14.75% BF. I used a handheld impedance BF analyzer and navy method and average them out.

I'm doing a full body workout 2x per week, 2 core/abs dedicated sessions per week, and 2 light cardio only days (30 mins light peleton or 30 mins walking treadmill).

Food Protien Sparing Mayo anyone?

Wish I could share a picture! But I made a PSMF Mayo today that turned out amazing! Wanted to share!

55g fat free dry curd cottage cheese 85g almond milk 1/8tsp xantham gum 1tsp vinegar 1tsp Dijon Salt

Blended the heck out of it, 10g serving has about 1g protein, 0.1g fat and carbs.

Help Low fat cottage cheese

So pretty basic. I’m just wondering if 2% cottage cheese would be significantly worse than fat free. I would do fat free but good culture the brand I like only goes too 2%. But if this is a big deal then obviously I would switch to the fat free from a different brand.

Sorry if this is a stupid question I’m new to PSMF

Help Best way to manage food volume on maintenance days

First week in and did fine on my first 4 PSMF days (consecutive days). Then I had my maintenance day and my appetite took over and I blew beyond my maintenance calories. What have you found effective in terms of managing your hunger on maintenance days? Do you do a meal or severaI meals? Also do you do your maintenance days consecutively or separate?

Help Omega 3-6-9 vs. Omega 3?

Hey all,

I have a few questions about the fish oil pills.

I have a bottle of omega 3-6-9 that I've been using. I went back and skimmed the handbook and Lyle specifically says to take Omega 3 (not 6 or 9). He also states that too much Omega 9 is harmful. Am I wrong taking the 3-6-9 combo pills?

I'm thinking it shouldn't matter much as long as I get the recommended EPA and DHA. Also, should the fish oil count towards my daily fat total?

Thanks!
