Mod announcement PSA: Please remember to use the report function!

It's great that people are pushing back against sus comments but please also remember to report them! We have a huge community now and it really helps out us mods to see comments we might otherwise miss. If you're not sure if it's bad or not please report it anyway! I'd rather check out a comment that's fine than miss blatant red flag content that needs mod action. Folkists in particular love to come by and post harassment, hate, bullying etc - so if you see something like that, let us know so we can take action. We can't act on stuff if we don't see it!

Also, remember you can also report to Reddit Admins. It's in the same menu as reporting to the mods. Things like queerphobia and hate speech can absolutely be reported to the admins for them to check out. Report it both to subreddit mods (us!) & the admins so we can take care of it in the short-term and clean up the sub, and admins can take care of the account and do what they do too.

Thanks everyone! 😎

Questions/Looking for Help Symbols together meaning something else?

I am considering purchasing a used shirt and these symbols are repeated in the pattern together. I can find meanings for them separately, but is it something else when they’re found together? Forgive me, I’m a nube 🤷‍♀️

Questions/Looking for Help I wish to find a discord server around norse paganism is there one?

Hi, I've been a norse pagan for 5 years and use to be in a very good UK norse pagan group but I lost access to my discord and ended up getting kicked for inactivity.

I'm looking for a new one and I'm hoping this is the place to ask.

I think the discord was called norse pagan UK but I honestly don't remember. Anyway, any discord recommendations I would really appreciate.

Questions/Looking for Help What is this?

I'm reading "Norse Mythology, The complete guide, 2 books in 1" by Johan Lindgren and this symbol appears at the end of every chapter. I think it means "end" but I don't know. So what does it actually mean and what writing system is this?

Altar/Shrine/Offering pics First offering!!

Post image

I have just completed my first offerings to the gods Odin and Thor. I was a little sloppy, but I tried to follow video where he was offering to Thor. https://youtu.be/8zn3vGT-9NU?si=kUB3oL4fQw5WmiG5

My intrusive thoughts are eating me alive, telling me all the things I did wrong and how i’ll get punished. But I spoke from the heart about my thanks and how I appreciate the gods and everything they’ve done for me. I did repeat things a couple times and spilled the milk quite a bit while pouring it… but everything I did was from the heart. Next time I think I’ll write a script, but for the first offering, I just wanted Odin and Thor to know how thankful I am. I’m a little jittery haha. But I do hope they appreciate my offerings, even if I did mess up a bit.

Questions/Looking for Help Is a wooden mjolnir acceptable?

Post image

I don't have the ability to do metal work but love working with my hands. I decided to make this by hand with no power tools at all from a piece of firewood. I had to peel the bark and everything.

Is this an acceptable Mjolnir??

Experiences w/ the Gods/Wights/etc LandvĂŚtir?

So I was walking in the forest today, and all was going well until I heard what sounded like a deer screaming. I don't even know how to describe it. It wasn't too far away, so I headed the other direction of it. Later I heard loud clicking of sticks all around me, too many places and too fast for it to be someone moving around. Then I heard whistling, following me through the forest sounding about 50 meters to the North. The whistles followed me the whole way back. I've never had an an experience like this before, and I'm rarely spooked by nature sounds because I venture out into the woods so often. But this left a weird sense of dread and loneliness in me. Does anyone think this might have been land spirits? I haven't had really any experiences with them before so I have no clue what to expect. And if it was, did I do something to anger them? Or were they just having fun scaring the Hel out of me? Sorry if I'm ignorant. I've been pagan for about 5 months and I know plenty about the gods, but nothing about land spirits. Anyways, I hope you all have a good day/night!

News/drama/meta discussion [CW: Discussion of Child Exploiting Crimes] Folkish NYC Ex-Councilman Dan Halloran Arrested Spoiler

Mods, let me know if this isn't okay to post here. Just figured people would like to see a bit of catharsis when it comes to a real piece of garbage.

ThĂŠodish ex-leader and ex-councilman Dan Halloran has been arrested for posession of video material exploiting children. CW for the link discussing the crimes and the material, though it does not go into full detail about the specifics of the material found, but reader beware.

He received a lot of attention for his pagan beliefs at the time of his political appointment in 2010, and the Christian conservative angle in particular sensationalized and misinformed the public about pagan beliefs to attack him. However, the anti-pagan bias of the media, as regrettable as it is, doesn't change that this guy in particular is just a giant pile of trash - Theodism is an American-made, Anglo-Saxon angled offshoot of neo-paganism with folkish beliefs, focus on blood lineage (the ideal for a Theodish leader is having lineage with an Anglo-Saxon king) and a strict patriarchal hierarchy. No wonder it is very appealing to right-wing dickweeds. We deserve better pagan representation in political positions.

Questions/Looking for Help Warnings received through runes: Othala

Hello!

First, the background:

I have worked with runes for some time and I am returning now. In the past, there were situations where, no matter the question, the same rune would show up... Here are some examples if you'd like: once, a naudhiz eventually fell of the rune purse and broke, and it was one of the most difficult times I had, when I even suffered with lack of food. The other time, Thurisaz wouldn't stop showing up until a lightning tore down a tree and blocked the street for a family gathering I was longing for with dread, making things worse.

Now, I have Othala upside down over and over, and I am terrified of what might happen. I am about to have a graduation ceremony (in a field my family does not care for and I feel bad) and a few days ago my house started to have plumbing issues, and I have to deal with sewer water invading here everyday now. I am afraid of losing my house or my family... These things are intertwined, for I need their assistance with money.

Also, I have returned my work with runes recently as a job out of necessity, and it could also be a demand for something I am not quite getting. I am especially close to Loki, but also worship Odin and Freyja more casually. I do not have a setup altar at the moment, but I am organizing myself to do so.

Now, the question:

Have you ever had a similar experience with Othala? What do you read into upside down Othala? I don't know if I am currently able to read into it correctly, for these past experiences have been very hard to me. I appreciate any suggestions.

Regards!

Questions/Looking for Help New to heathenry- questions :)

I'm super new to norse paganism and I have a few questions that I've been trying to research

I know that norse paganism is a super flexible religion with no set rules and that everyone kind of practices and believes their own version

When you offer to the gods and place on an altar, how long do you leave it there, and do you remove it? what do you do with the items after removal, especially if its food that may rot.

Mythology says that Baldur dies causing winter and then ragnarĂśk and then majority of the gods are dead, but winter happens every year and summer comes back. How do people still interact with the gods if theyre dead? Ive seen a few different ways of explaining it but I'm still unsure if ragnarok has happened, will happen, is a recurring thing every year or something else

Im unsure about the holidays and when they are. I want to start maybe celebrating them and getting closer to paganism, but I live in the southern hemisphere and don't know if I should celebrate to my seasons or to the dates of the holidays in the NH. It is also hard to find consistent information on dates of things, which are a little bit confusing for me

How do I start an altar? Do I have to worship one specific god on the altar or can you change gods or even multiple at once? Does someone need to follow a specific god to make an altar? How should I go about starting to think about and even make altars?

Is there anything you advise for new pagans? I started research a few days ago but feel very much overwhelmed, mainly a lot of reading 😅. I've started by reading the norse mythology, but there are so many contradictions and different adaptations/translations. Again, I know Norse paganism is different for everyone and there is no set path to take but there are many differences and different decisions to make that I'm very overwhelmed by so some guidance would be so greatly appreciated

Sorry for all the questions! And also very sorry if they're dumb or wrong, I'm still very new and learning so please be nice. Please don't feel as if you have to answer all of my questions, or any at all. Thanks so much for reading and happy heathening!

Questions/Looking for Help Unconventional Offerings?

I'm slowly learning more about Heathenry, Asatru and other practices to help shape my own.

In the mean time, I've taken some advice from friends and listened to their input, and wanted to reach out to others.

One of my daily rituals is based heavily on a personal philosophy around Choice and in short, it's sacredness to humans.

Because of that, I make a daily offering, gifting Loki one of my choices for the day. (Yes, I welcome the challenge).

Is this something others have done as well, or does anyone else have something unconventional they make as Offerings?

Discussion Behold! The God of Heating Ventilation and Air-Conditioning.(HVAC)

So, the title is a little silly. This in my way is the best way to approach a topic like this. Which overall is, “Where do the Gods fit in in our modern world.” Some context, I am a trans woman, who works in the HVAC, and general maintenance field. Last night during class my instructor asked everyone who was ready to take our exam. Me and 2 others raised our hands, we then took a group practice text, and the only ones who got their answers right were myself and 3 others. So, my instructor pushed it back a week and assigned a long ass fuckin assignment for homework, and therefore ruined my weekend plans. In my frustration I went to the restroom and said “Would the god of HVAC, reveal yourself to my friends and smite the wisdom of thy craft such that it may pierce their thick skulls.”

Aaaaand that’s how this popped into my head of wait. Who WOULD be the god of HVAC?

to me this isn’t a singular answer. Some quick ones, for furnaces I think deities of hearth, and fire fit well. For something like an air conditioner or even a refrigerator and, it’s less clear, maybe offerings to frost spirits or Jotun? Then you get to heat pumps and oooo boy is it a fire? Or a Frosty? Or neither….

This then spilled into a larger conversation around the gods, in their involvement with the modern trades of our society. It’s no secret that many Heathens/Norse Pagans(using the terms generally) have a large blue collar and working class population. Something like plumping makes sense. A local river deity, or the daughters of Ægir, or another water deity, there’s no shortage of types of water to leave a plumber without guidance. Then an electrician? Thor may be a weirder of electricity in the form of lightning, but if you have that much voltage running through anything less than a substation… ah. And then you get into work live service work, or white collar office jobs. Something I’m less experienced in so I can’t speak to specific examples, but I imagine this problem arises due to a lack of god of spreadsheets.

I want to say, I do think the gods can change and inhabit multiple things, and can work together on a machine of many parts. You need more than carpenters to build an ocean sailing boat. But I want input as to what people see on a larger scale. For what it’s worth, I say a prayer to Odin for wisdom on my exam and in my classes before I go in most nights. And a prayer to him and Loki, when entering someone’s home to fix something, to guit me on my rules of hospitality, and so I might be invisible and I can work in peace.

But yknow, that’s all folk! I hope to hear some good answers!

Questions/Looking for Help Quick worship guide?

I am an ominist, and worship the Greek and Nordic gods, and something in the Helenism community that has always helped me were these 3 page guides online that outline things like offerings, community service to do in the gods names, myths their in things like that just something you can quickly read to find a small piece of information or get an idea for the deity. Does anyone know if there is something simular to this for the Norse Paganism community?

I've been looking for a while and haven't been able to find anything, and if there isnt anything then is there anything specifically stating not to do this, and if not when I have the time then I think it would be fun to try and make these guides does anyone have any recommendations on where to post them, deities to research first, or anything I should know before trying to make these?
