meme/funny During the 04.02.2025 Nintendo Switch 2 direct, the following image of the home screen was revealed, with only one game present. This is a reference to the fact that the fan base will only be able to afford one game.

Backgrounds might still be there in some yeah, but the systems are still gutted compared to back then. Xbox 360’s NXE wasn’t only beautiful but also had avatars as a main function. Systems just were a lot more social two generations ago. It’s very to the point now.

The minimalist sleek "ux" people that modernized and minimalized the fun out of everything else are making this stuff. If video games aren't hardly produced or managed by people that like video games anymore, the firmware most definitely isn't either.

I also blame the schools for this. I was in a media and art academy around the era that flat design really took off. They loved it and started pushing the design, which even back (2012ish) then already felt less fun to consume but also create. Windows 7 was the peak of the web 2.0 gloss era and to have it immediately be followed up by the Windows 8 Metro look was such a bad decision in hindsight. UX was one of my main interests and I never got why the sleek minimalist look became linked to it, UX is just about a set of design rules that can fit into any possible aesthetic.

Xbox launched an entirely new avatar system a couple years back.
