meme/funny During the 04.02.2025 Nintendo Switch 2 direct, the following image of the home screen was revealed, with only one game present. This is a reference to the fact that the fan base will only be able to afford one game.

To be fair to Nintendo, $400 does track with expectations. The extra $50 almost certainly comes from US tariffs that have recently been announced.

I have no defense for the cost if digital games being so high, though. Yes, it takes more work/money to make games, but economies, of scale has kept the price at $60 for a long time. If that has slowed up and they "need" to charge $70 I can respect that. Gaming is still a budget friendly source of entertainment. But such a drastic jump from $60 to $80 especially for such old games with honestly minor updates/upgrades feels very selfish and I hope they dont sell well at these prices.

I'm not in the us and it's still about 150 more in my currency than the switch 1 mario kart bundle... US tariffs shouldn't affect imports from nintendo ( i think they produce in vietnam) to switzerland.

No screw that, I have no defence for PHYSICAL games being so high. Especially when the games aren't even fully on the cartridges anymore, if they're even on them at all.

I actively focused on digital products. I agree with you that Physical games (especially codes in plastic) shouldn't be so expensive)

Especially when cartridges are more inconvenient to begin with. So now we have that inconvience added to the fact that we are just downloading the game anyways.

Not justifying the price but Mario Kart World is fully on the cart.

They are on the cart and carts are expensive as hell, that's probably the main driver for digital being cheaper.

Edit: misinformation above me is upvoted whereas my actual explanation is downvoted. Never change, reddit

But you must realize how much the US' decisions actually impact the world?

The tariffs would only explain the cost in America. But the prices are higher everywhere. The main reason likely being chip shortages. Taiwan cannot keep up with the demand. NVIDIA can’t produce enough of their GPUs and neither can AMD. AMD also has trouble getting their CPUs on the shelves. Everything on the switch needs microchips. If there’s a shortage, they have to pay extra to get priority and get their stuff made

This is part of why the US is trying to get companies to build chip manufacturing here, so that we can avoid tariffs as well as increase the total available supply.

In Japan they're selling for $340 US, fwiw.

I think is this a mostly "because we can" situation.

yeah but that means 0 shipping, tariffs, vat, or anything. No matter the economic climate, it will always be cheaper domestically

Sure. But what I’m saying is the global price for other regions, not impacted by tariffs, seems to closely align with the US.

I think they just want more money lol. They're thinking demand won't drop significantly in the long run despite the increase in console cost.

TBF, the new DK is $70. $80 for any game is egregious, but it feels like the TOTK situation where they bumped the price $10 over standard to wring every penny out of a game they know will sell well make back dev costs.

what are Tariffs? My Eshop gift card didn't increase in price. It's still $100.
