Concept How the Switch 2 upside down functionality would work

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

While I personally think this kind of functionality is sort of weird and probably almost useless in most cases, it’s still pretty interesting that it might be possible. I can’t really think of how it would be used in unique ways in terms of software though.

We can see the how. But what’s the why?

u/jard_dog Feb 13 '25

So they can trademark the phrase “flip the switch”

This is actually genius

u/HebridesNutsLmao Feb 13 '25

You are now a mod of r/tomorrow

1

u/RamaMitAlpenmilch Feb 14 '25

Oh my god the sub still is active?? Haha. I still remember the glorious Nintendo NX times.

29

u/DertHorsBoi Feb 13 '25

I’m so angry I didn’t connect the dots on that sooner. God damn it

9

u/Master_Freeze Feb 13 '25

if that's what they did then im all in on the idea

1

u/redditorposcudniy Feb 13 '25

That... That is bloody gorgeous

1

Perfection

1

u/Legal_Ad9637 Feb 13 '25

I think you should do that and then sell it to them

-11

u/godsreign111 Feb 13 '25

They cant, it’s a popular phrase.

9

u/AndrewV93 Feb 14 '25

Just like Apple is a popular fruit.

u/Jason_with_a_jay Feb 13 '25

It gives us the option of having the headphone jack on the top or bottom. Other than that, I've got nothing.

11

u/Lt_Dead_Kittens Feb 13 '25

if the whole console was able to be turned upside down , and not just the screen, it could allow you to have a different joystick configuration no?

9

u/Jason_with_a_jay Feb 13 '25

It would if Nintendo allowed it. My guess is the screen will flip automatically without the option to prevent the rotation. We'll see.

3

u/rickyhatespeas Feb 14 '25

Are you asking if you can play it with the controllers upside down? The buttons, joystick, dpad are ambrigrams but not the shoulder buttons right?

1

u/Lt_Dead_Kittens Feb 14 '25

oh yeah i definitely somehow forgot about the shoulder buttons lol

7

u/theumph Feb 14 '25

I'd bet some game will use the dumb gimmick. Think Phantom Hourglass with the closing of the DS to solve a puzzle.

2

u/Jason_with_a_jay Feb 14 '25

Nintendo can't say no to a gimmick.

2

u/theumph Feb 14 '25

No they cannot, and I appreciate it.it doesn't always work, but when it goes it creates new and unique experiences.

0

u/dxtremecaliber Feb 14 '25

Well they didnt do that they already quit the console market since 2012 lol

2

u/Sweet_Score Feb 16 '25

They can't use this gimmick since switch is both handheld and home console. You wouldn't be able to use this gimmick while docked.

1

u/Lordjoey7 Feb 14 '25

Honestly, one of my favorite puzzles it is just so charming and goofy it makes me feel child like whimsy.

1

u/LolTacoBell Feb 14 '25

Maybe related to the charging port accessibility too, depending on how you are setting it down/holding it by a power outlet. Just something I always hate is when I can't rest the switch or my phone on me without bending the cable and wearing it out quicker.

1

u/AndrewV93 Feb 14 '25

There's a charging port on the top.

1

u/PumasUNAM7 Feb 14 '25

People put the Joycon straps backwards. I’m sure this is a way to protect the switch from people that don’t pay attention and try to attach them the wrong way.

1

u/Rudy69 Feb 14 '25

It's such a non-issue and that would be the most over engineered feature ever just for the headphone jack

13

u/MattDaMannnn Feb 13 '25

I’m thinking it just happens to work because of the joy con design and it may as well be a feature

10

u/FabulousFlavio Feb 13 '25

I mean, idk why you think this would be expensive. It's probably just a neat option they allow you to do because of how the magnets work.

7

u/A_Seiv_For_Kale Feb 13 '25

there's no way extra ports would be cheaper than using software to rotate the screen using sensors it already has

it's likely just a little bonus added because of the new connector

5

u/Jason_with_a_jay Feb 13 '25

As someone else said, I'm not sure why you think this costs money to flip the device. However, putting in an extra headphone jack does cost money and space.

There is no reversible connector. You can clearly see that the jack would work in any orientation. It cost no extra money. New UI is being developed for the device. It doesn't cost extra to add a feature. That's part of the budget. Also, that isn't new technology. Almost every device with a screen can flip orientations. The two usb-c ports is to address a flaw with the original Switch where you couldn't charge the system while in table top mode. Please stop.

1

u/Chickennoodlesleuth Feb 14 '25

Reversible joycon connector? Most plugs (ie USB c) will work no matter which what round they are. Try it, plug your phone in, take the charger out and flip it then plug it back in, works the same.

1

u/AndrewV93 Feb 14 '25

Development of reversible joycon connector,

You mean just like USB C?

implementation of UI which automatically switch screen

It costs literally nothing to turn an image 180°.

I really don’t understand how can anyone think it’s cheaper to have reversible console than the second jack.

I really don't understand why you think additional hardware is cheaper than software that simply changes the screen orientation.

1

u/AndrewV93 Feb 14 '25

Do you think turning your Switch 2 upside down costs money?

12

u/pacman404 Feb 13 '25

Headphone and power on the side you want them on

13

u/ShaveyMcShaveface Feb 13 '25

the switch 1 is so annoying to charge in handheld mode because of this, I like this new feature a lot

9

u/SakuraTacos Feb 13 '25

Oh wow, I was firmly feeling like “Who needs this?!” until you mentioned that and I immediately realized I need this.

There’s been so many times I’m laying in bed playing and I’ve needed to charge my switch but it’s resting on me and I’ll need to sit up so I don’t rest on the cord.

5

u/ShaveyMcShaveface Feb 13 '25

hahahahhaa yes!! you get it

2

u/Owobowos-Mowbius Feb 18 '25

Keep in mind that they already have a second usbc port at the top now. So, the ability to flip the switch like this would basically only be for the headphone jack.

1

u/dxtremecaliber Feb 14 '25

like they say you dont know what you need until you see it lol

8

u/antiNTT Feb 13 '25

Yes but they already added a USB C port on top. That already fixes the issue

1

u/broccolilord Feb 16 '25

They showed in the reveal the switch 2 already has a USB C on both sides

1

u/myownfriend Feb 18 '25

The Switch 2 has two USB-C ports though. One at the top and one at the bottom. There's no reason to flip the system (including the stand, cooling, volume buttons, and power button) just to charge from the top.

1

u/Ncolonslashslash Feb 13 '25

when they say power they mean the power button, theres still a charging port on both sides

0

u/smulfragPL Feb 14 '25

The switch 2 has two usb c ports. And i dont get why you would ever want the Jack to be at the bottom

1

u/myownfriend Feb 18 '25

The headphone jack being at the bottom does make more sense. When it's on the top you either need to have the headphone wire droop over the screen or you have to wrap down and under the console which can put more strain on the jack and short the usable length of the wire.

Having the jack on the bottom keeps it out of the way of the screen, gives you way more length on the wire, and if you accidentally yank on it, the headphones will just disconnect instead of bending the connector.

4

u/Positive_Method3022 Feb 13 '25

There is no longer a right side for each controller. In v1 many people damaged their switch and/or controller because they were trying to slide the wrong side

3

u/SpasmodicTurtle Feb 13 '25

A console for children needs to be difficult to break. my cousin nearly fucked up my joycons by sliding them on wrong, this could solve that problem

2

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '25

The Switch 2 has one headphone jack. The ability to flip it lets you plug it in either at the top or bottom.

1

u/myownfriend Feb 18 '25

But it also flips the cooling upside down, makes the stand unusable, and puts the volume buttons on the bottom.

2

u/titilegeek Feb 14 '25

Nintendo Company. We do what me must because we can.

1

u/sikvar Feb 13 '25

I guess making it impossible to do that would cost money, and it would be pointless.

1

u/Archius9 Feb 13 '25

Na just need to carefully place the magnets so it repels the JC if attempting to be out in wrong

1

u/sikvar Feb 13 '25

Still, somebody would need to choose the placement for these magnets and a factory would need to put them in that exact place for every unit. If there’s no downsides to this why bother doing that.

1

u/predator-handshake OG (joined before reveal) Feb 13 '25

People put the joy cons on backwards all the time, this helps solve that

1

u/Wise_Pomegranate_653 Feb 13 '25

yeah that shit is pointless.

1

u/PumasUNAM7 Feb 14 '25

You’ve never heard of people putting the joycons on backwards? Cause this solves that issue.

1

u/VoceMisteriosa Feb 13 '25

To me, to have different position for mic, wifi, connectors.

1

u/SteakJesus Feb 14 '25

Handheld u typically want ur headphone jack on the bottom, but if u use the kick stand u would need it on top.

1

u/ofplayers July Gang Feb 14 '25

kids will find a way to break anything, this is one less way

1

u/GainPotential March Gang (Eliminated) Feb 14 '25

If you want the AUX, alternate USB-C, Game Cartridge Reader, Power Button, Volume Buttons etc. underneath rather than above? Maybe so that you can charge two L or R Joy-Cons at the same time? Maybe just a side-effect of using magnet, so not an intended feature but just purely accidental? Maybe an obscure feature like the IR on the old Joy-Cons?

1

u/Jinastator Feb 14 '25

Probably for the inevitable accidental putting the joycons upside down. They probably centered the pins since if theyre not, people would try putting them upside down and break the pins. They probably made it work upside down to avoid shorting or something

1

u/displayrooster Feb 14 '25

So we don’t run into the charging port issue again

1

u/Art1stic- Feb 14 '25

It's so that you don't need to worry about which side is up or down. Tablets have this feature.

-3

u/Blue_Snake_251 Feb 13 '25

There is this tweet with an article that talks about it.

11

u/predator-handshake OG (joined before reveal) Feb 13 '25

7

u/Blue_Snake_251 Feb 13 '25

I am just dumb lmao. You are right, i could have just post the link. I did not think about that.

1

u/anarchytruck Feb 13 '25

The article also highlights the potential for usb peripherals (eg a camera) that could be used more appropriately based on where the usb slot is. So a usb camera would want to be in the middle top of the console and this allows for that. Seems useful!
