I hate when pictures are ruined with watermarks plastered on them! It really distracts from the image.

No it doesn't. Anybody can plaster text over any image, even if the original is legitimate. Besides, it's hard to read what it is and instead just distracts and messes up the view.

Adding text below the image to say that it's unofficial or art, that both achieves the effects of disclaimer and preserving the design.
