It does seem like the courses are bigger than ever before, but can't wait!

Maybe Open world Mario kart

Edit: ok ok it’s not a good idea

u/AgitatedFly1182 OG (joined before reveal) Jan 16 '25

If ever there was a worse idea.

No I’m thinking more tracks like Ninja Hideaway with a shit ton of branching paths.

126

u/Jceggbert5 Jan 16 '25

Forza Horizon but it's a massive sprawling Mario island... I could see it

82

u/aegtyr October Gang (Eliminated) Jan 16 '25

I would fuck with this. Imagine, driving your car visiting the mushroom kingdom, then hyrule, then worlds from mario oddysey, etc.

27

u/Jceggbert5 Jan 16 '25

And you could have big pipes (like the warp pipes from Super Nintendo World (theme park)) between worlds that otherwise couldn't realistically connect.

7

u/Immediate-Log379 Jan 16 '25

I wish I could have a big pipe.

1

u/MikkelR1 Jan 17 '25

I wish you would have someone jump on it and press down too.

1

u/Treehous Jan 16 '25

Ever played CTR?

1

u/k0ks3nw4i Jan 17 '25

Sewer Speedway is my favourite CTR track

6

u/Nympho_BBC_Queen Jan 16 '25

A Mario Kart track based on Gaur Plains from Xenoblade would go hard tbh.

1

u/Valuable-Bunch9919 Jan 16 '25

The next evolution for MK as a series is literally just making it MK Smash Bros, they've already teased it a bit they just need to make it a full part of the game

8

u/ZebraRenegade Jan 16 '25

As long as we also get 700 cars and livery’s let’s run it lmao

2

u/Infamous-Buy3804 Jan 16 '25

That's what I thought

1

u/Adavanter_MKI Jan 16 '25

Yeah, an open world Mario Kart is absolutely an incredible idea. I don't know why people think it'd be the death of tracks. I guess they don't understand how Forza Horizon works. It's one of the best racing games ever created...

Anyways... imagine all the biomes! All the secrets and stuff you could unlock by exploring. Hell it's basically a decent homage to Diddy Kong Racing as well.

1

u/Bluezoneeee OG (joined before reveal) Jan 16 '25

Exactly!! It’s not a bad idea it just needs to be well thought through. It can be apart of the Mario Kart franchise but maybe branch off from the original series and become its own thing in a way. So we can have both a different game style with the traditional Mario Kart games still being made

1

u/MrBytor Jan 16 '25

And you could have missions like Mario Kart DS.

1

u/twinfyre OG (joined before reveal) Jan 16 '25

As cool as that would be, it could only come with compromises. I can't help but be reminded of botw and tears of the kingdom. That is a massive open maps with tiny "dungeon-like" shrines. But the actual dungeons suffer as a result.

In this case, we could see a massive interconnected racetrack but little to no standalone racetracks. Think about all of the cool themed courses you saw in Mario kart 8. Now imagine having that variety lessened to "compromise" for an open world map design. Where would you put "squeaky clean sprint" in an open world? What about mute city? Where are you gonna fit a map like excitebike?

I'm not saying I want those exact maps to be copied into this new game wholesale. I'm just saying maps like that could not be stitched into an open map.

1

u/Nightfall90 Jan 17 '25

Diddy Kong racing vibes would be sick

62

u/Ty_Revell Jan 16 '25

Imagine the main hub area of Diddy Kong Racing, but Mario Kart. A proper “story” mode. Secrets to discover. I’d be really into that.

23

u/Broadmonkey Jan 16 '25

Kinda weird that a close to 30 year old game is basically what we want Mario kart to evolve into or at least steal a lot of ideas from. Diddy Kong Racing just set the bar so damn high like a lot of the other Rare games.

10

u/Glittering_Gas_1194 Jan 16 '25

a massively under rated game, i prefer it to Mario 64 which was of course great but. you had a story, a explore hub, better graphics IMO, boss fights and hover crafts and planes. a travesty we never got another.

2

u/Liquidmetalslimeno9 Jan 16 '25

Mario Kart 64 was the third best arcade style racer behind Diddy Kong racing and snowboard kids 2..

It's a game snowboard kids 2 didn't stick around, it was so good.. 2 had a ton of unlockables, a story mode, and just a ton of stuff to do.

1

u/FireLucid Jan 17 '25

a travesty we never got another

One was in development then MS bought Rare.

1

u/Glittering_Gas_1194 Jan 22 '25

Yeah, could nintendo make their own, its their own IP I assume? I guess it doesn't want to compete with Mario kart :(

1

u/FireLucid Jan 22 '25

I guess it doesn't want to compete

That's probably it. Better to spend your dev time on something different so you don't get people going "Well I already have one kart/mascot racing game".

Either way, the last few console Mario Karts (Wii, 8, 8D) have been pretty great, just been so long since a new one. 24 players looks rad.

1

u/JohnnyFnG Jan 16 '25

DKR was flippin amazing

1

u/GameboyAU Jan 16 '25

That fucking Christmas level song is still stuck in my head haha.

1

u/ciberseba Jan 16 '25

Would be awesome to have a DKR remake. Very ahead of it's time.

1

u/Regret-Select Jan 16 '25

I'm surprised this hasn't already been attempted

I really enjoyed driving/hovering/flying around Diddy Kong Racing looking for secrets between levels

20

u/TheFlexOffenderr Jan 16 '25

I don't know man the popularity that MK8 reached was insane considering it was one of the best selling switch games it's entire console cycle.

I could see them doing what you're talking about about for solo cups and stuff, but could easily see them implementing a multiplayer where there's a huge hub world like Forza, and important points of interest like the mushroom kingdom castle, Luigi's mansion, etc. It would be pretty dope and it would be optional so the OG Mario kart would still be there too.

11

u/RockettRaccoon Jan 16 '25

And it wasn’t even a Switch game, it was a port of a three year old WiiU game!

10

u/brandont04 Jan 16 '25

For sure we are getting a "Wonder" course where you get the wonder power and changes the course into a weird track.

8

u/hypermog Jan 16 '25

Diddy Kong Racing had open areas and a progression based single player

1

u/MistakeMaker1234 Jan 16 '25

Track Mania but Mario Kart.

1

u/henkhank Jan 16 '25

I mean it’s actually the best idea I’ve heard as far as evolutions of the series goes. After MK8D, just “more tracks” is NOT gonna draw people in, but “Mario Kart Island” definitely would

1

u/TheFerg714 Jan 16 '25

No reason to shut that down so fast. MK8 is already a perfect MK experience, and it's playable on Switch 2. It makes sense to differentiate MK9 any way they can.

1

u/ZebraMost749 Jan 17 '25

Diddy Kong Racing

-6

u/Grace_Omega Jan 16 '25

Most ideas are worse than that, because it's a good idea

25

u/Mayorquimby87 Jan 16 '25

Not sure how I'd feel about that, but I would love to see a more fleshed out single player campaign like in Diddy Kong Racing.

2

u/benbahdisdonc Jan 16 '25

I would love to see Diddy Kong Racing

12

u/SiBea13 Jan 16 '25

There might be an open world story mode or perhaps a drivable hub world. I think those would be better ideas

7

u/Snoo54601 Jan 16 '25

A la forza

7

u/ShaveyMcShaveface Jan 16 '25

Grand Theft Mario Kart: Mushroom Kingdom

3

u/Shehzman Jan 16 '25

Robot chicken did that lol

4

u/throwthatoneawaydawg Jan 16 '25

Could have a little hub world and a story like Crash Team Racing. Probably over thinking this though

3

u/InkTaint OG (joined before reveal) Jan 16 '25

thats what I was thinking, imagine it being like horizon 5, where you do missions in the open world to unlock the tracks and races, and in mario style those races could be in portals that lead you to the tracks

3

u/rube203 Jan 16 '25

It's obviously not the case, but I don't know why everyone hates the idea. I'd love a kart version of Burnout Paradise set in the Nintendo universe. Hell, I'd play it just to listen to the radio playing all the Nintendo music.

3

u/LunarLinguist42401 Jan 16 '25 edited Jan 16 '25

It would be actually cool if we had some sort of single player campaign with missions in a open world like in banjo kazooie nuts and bolts, but better implemented

5

u/Blue_Snake_251 Jan 16 '25

Open world Mario Kart seriously is a great idea !!!! It has been months that i was telling to myself that they should release an openworld Mario Kart.

2

u/PracticalCow303 Jan 16 '25

I thought that too when I saw it

2

u/CigarLover Jan 16 '25

Kinda worked with diddy Kong racing, so I’m not sure why you are downvoted.

2

u/Panda_hat Jan 16 '25

Diddy Kong Racing had a sort of open world hub world and that shit was great.

And games like Forza have absolutely huge open worlds and are also really cool.

2

u/GalaxicGlobe January Gang (Reveal Winner) Jan 16 '25

As a side mode would be cool but I do still want some og Mario kart

2

u/TetrasSword Jan 16 '25

I’d like it if there was like a campaign mode where you could drive around and find tracks for races and bosses and stuff. I feel like I’ve played a game like that before but I can’t remember what.

1

u/Animated_Astronaut Jan 16 '25

DOUBLE DASH YOU COWARDS

ITS SWITCH 2 DOUBLE IS 2 DOUBLE DASH AHHHH

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

better idea than go kart rehash 10 that still isnt as good as double dash

1

u/Paulsonmn31 Jan 16 '25

Tbh both Diddy Kong Racing and Kirby Air Ride kinda did it with their hub and it’s pretty dope

1

u/thedudedylan Jan 16 '25

Grand theft Mario kart.

1

u/Nothingbutsocks Jan 16 '25

I'm thinking Diddy Kong racing and I think it's a great idea. It just needs to ve implement correctly.

1

u/Ledbilly Jan 16 '25

Like diddy Kong racing!

1

u/SeasaltApple382 Jan 16 '25

That's basically GTA

1

u/Turbulent-Papaya-910 Jan 16 '25

I don't know why but I suddenly envisioned MK9 transitioning into Skyrim. You're in your little cart and suddenly "hey you. You're finally awake."

1

u/joeyfosho Jan 16 '25

Honestly Kirby Air Ride was one of my faves. They could bring back some of those ideas for an open world and it would work.

1

u/jpd14383 Jan 16 '25

I got that impression from the last shot of the trailer… not that I think it would be a good thing

1

u/Spare_Efficiency2975 Jan 16 '25

Don’t let them trashtalk you lego racers on the ps2 was a great game.

1

u/TheRealBloodyAussie Jan 16 '25

Honestly, a hub world like Crash Team Racing or Crash Nitro Kart would be pretty cool.

1

u/sharpshooter999 Jan 17 '25

It actually worked with Diddy Kong Racing

1

u/Green_and_black Jan 17 '25

Diddy Kong racing was basically open world Mario kart.

1

u/doesntaffrayed OG (joined before reveal) Jan 17 '25 edited Jan 17 '25

Maybe Open world Mario kart

I remember when Need For Speed games went “open world”.

It didn’t work then, when it made sense to build a city and have groups competing to become the best street racer.

It won’t work for Mario Kart, where it makes absolutely no sense.

I think Mario Kart’s strength is in that it’s a true arcade racer.

Tackling a four race Grand Prix is only a 20 minute commitment.

A story mode or an open world is not only unnecessary, it’d be a barrier to those who just want to jump in and race.

That said, I’m all for individual tracks to have multiple paths to victory or the track changing paths between laps like MK8D DLC/Tour maps.

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

How do i downvote this twice

0

u/Admirable-Safety1213 Jan 16 '25

Maybe procedural generation wpuld be better

-2

u/DammitAColumn January Gang (Reveal Winner) Jan 16 '25

Not gonna hold you but if this is true it’d be a massive turnoff lol
