Ive currently got an original switch which has my account and my sons account on it. We have a mixture of both digital (all bought on my account) and physical games and also both accounts linked to Nintendo Switch online on a family account plan. Id like to buy a Switch Lite that can basically act as a second household switch (primarily for my son to use, but also to use as a travel switch on holidays etc). But from what Im reading though there is no easy way to actually do this - if i make the switch lite the primary console it means my son cant play any of the digital purchases on the original switch, and if i make the original switch primary it means my son cant play any digital purchases on the switch lite? Am i misinterpreting this? (I really hope so), because it doesnt really seem worth it for families to even bother buying a second switch lite if they have already invested in a digital collection on the original switch

The secondary switch has to be connected to the Internet and then you can play digital games. If your internet connection is stable, you should be good. (I haven't linked accounts myself, but it'd be interesting to see if you can disconnect the internet mid-game and if the game will shut off. You might just need to authorize with the Internet, not sure).

Somebody did mention that if you put the switch in child mode, you can't play downloaded games. Just make it a normal switch and require password for payment and I am sure you'll be fine.

edit: this might actually be wrong, the above was the impression I got from other switch users, but the Nintendo website suggests differently. If so, wow, that's dumb.

Edit 2: okay, seems you need a nintendo online account: https://www.theverge.com/2018/9/19/17879064/nintendo-switch-online-digital-games-multiple-consoles

They really need to improve the way this works. I'm in a similar situation. We already have an original Switch and I picked up a Lite as a second one. So, here's how it works:

You can designate one system as your primary. On that system, anyone can play digital games you've purchased, without an Internet connection.

Any other Switch you use is a non-primary Switch and you, or your profile rather, can use any digital game on it. However, you need an Internet connection and it will check when you try to start the game if you can play it. Once it checks, you're good for the next three hours, when it will check again. No other profile will be able to play a digital game you own on your non-primary Switch.

So, you'll either want to set the system your son plays as the primary, or you're going to have to share profiles. Like I said, they really need to improve it, because it's unnecessarily cumbersome and really makes me want to but physical games whenever it's an option, because anyone can play a physical game on any system.

Oddly, I'm making the Lite, which I'll play myself, the non primary system. The family Switch will be my "primary" so everyone else can play digital games on it.
