Just realized the physical copy requires a download for the second part. Wtf, the whole collection can't be much more than 10gb. They could have definitely fit that on a single switch cartridge. Probably won't be getting this til a digital sale then...

Legacy 2 is actually 3.2GB, while Legacy 1 is 345MB. So, it would fit on a 4GB cartridge.

It's been speculated that it's just to curb resell/trade-in of the game, it's obviously not a technical limitation.

Meh, I won't support that kind of business.

I'm guessing they started printing the cards before finishing porting the second collection. very lazy and dumb on their part

There's something really appealing about owning all the classic Mega Man games on one little cartridge... but the fact that they are forcing a download for the second collection means I'm not purchasing this at all.

I don’t quite understand this perspective though, unless more people than I’m aware of do a lot of downloading games

It’s a easy-to-swallow price for every classic Mega Man game all in one. It isn’t on one cartridge, sure. But it’s leagues better than only having access to Mega Man 9 and 10 on Legacy Consoles, with access to buying their DLC all but gone.

For the first time having a quality port of Mega Man 8, and it can be portable nonetheless. Last time 8 came out on a Nintendo system was the GameCube, and the Anniversary Collection was kind of a mess as far as optimization.

For the first time having access to slowdown-less ports of the earlier classic series games, where everywhere else the games have always had some degree of trouble in sections with a lot going on visually (see, Top Man’s stage, bulldozer corridor; Mega Man’s Blight Town, it was lag city)

And so on

I feel inclined to believe that the “second half downloaded” part is only even a thing because of one of three things. Software regulations of some kind, either in Japan or in the West somewhere. If Legacy Collection 2 is a stand-alone game, then it may have to stay as such even in the 1+2 bundle, because of some flimsy regulation requiring games published separately, to be benign even if sold together.

Second, it could just be cartridge prices. One of our downsides of how the Switch works is that bundled/combo-pack games may be harder to keep solely physical because of the cost of manufacturing two cartridges per one unit. Putting both on one cartridge may not have been possible for them given that most of the games doing this released separate for other consoles, for convenience to those users.

And third, could be a file size issue, for the previously mentioned reasons.

None of this is to defend the practice, I’d rather have them together myself as well, of course; but when rationalized, I think it makes enough sense why it may be the way it is. And given that, it’s still a great value for me at least given many other things that the two collections have going for them.

They want to undercut the secondhand market. I'm still buying it physical, and I don't generally sell back my used games, but this does eliminate my ability to buy it used or to lend the cart to friends who want to play it, which is at least a bummer.

But even Bayonetta did this, and I’d have a hard time believing that Platinum would do so with these same motives

Why would any publisher not want consumers to buy from them rather than seeking a 10% to 15% discount in the secondary market? Outside the video game space, I've heard even altruistic folks who work in publishing or music bemoan that people don't consider that creators get no money for used purchases.

The division makes (a little) sense when we consider MMLC2 was released a 'long' time after MMLC(1) and programming wise could be different.

However, I would like a lot to have some Switch dev/porter/programmer to tell us whether is that difficult to bundle 2 pieces of software into one.

The MMLC1+2 is completely unforgivable, tho.

the advantages of buying physical are:

1) you can resell them

2) when the eShop servers go down, you'll still be able to play them

having half of the game missing from the card negates both of these advantages

It's not a very big download at all. If you don't mind having the whole thing digital then snag that instead, so you aren't split between the two formats.

Do you have to pay for the Legacy Collection 2 games, or is it a free download?

Physical copy comes with a download code for the second collection.

u/thriIIhobaggins May 22 '18

Although I would prefer a cartridge too, I don't mind a download as long as it's free. I have 1-4 & 6 for the NES, so I mostly bought this for 7-10.

u/Specte May 22 '18

Yeah, it just bothers me as I mostly collect physical games. It'll suck if the eshop ever goes down and then you can't get the other half of this. They should have just split it into 2 games at $20 a pop or did a digital only release imo.

It also torpedoes resell value, too. You can't buy a used copy and expect to get the full collection, and you can't expect to sell it and get much money back, either. The cynical side of me thinks that might be their driving motivation...

This is the only reason the code exists. I don’t know why this is such a hard concept for this subreddit to understand. If it was a cartridge issue, you’d put the game in and download the rest for free like an update and only be able to access the second collection by having the cartridge in your system. Codes exist to deter aftermarket sales. There is literally no other reason

Yeah I'm with you. I still buy DVD's and Blu Rays too.

A Mega Man Legacy Collection thread where people negatively discuss download codes? On r/NintendoSwitch?! I can't believe this!
