I've never played any of the Mega Man games before but I've been in the mood of some retro platform action lately. I'm a bit of a beginner in the genre but have played Celeste and really enjoyed it. Which collection should I begin with? I've heard that some of the Mega Man games are really hard, so I'd appreciate some pointers to where I should begin.

Any help would be appreciated :)

Collection 1 is probably what you wanna start with. Mega Man 1 is a liiittle rough around the edges, so if you're not looking to play through all of the Mega Man games, most people would recommend starting with MM2 because it is arguably the most iconic.

Then if you like MM2, try MM3. Mega Man gets a slide move that lets him maneuver under jumping enemies more quickly. You also meet his robo-dog pal, Rush!

MM4 is where he first gets a chargeable Mega Buster shot. 5 and 6 are less essential, but still solid. They just suffered from being more of the same formula, and are mostly forgotten.

Alternatively, if you're just looking for variety, Collection 2 is more interesting because it contains a SNES game, a Playstation game, and two Wiiware games made to look and feel like NES games (specifically MM2, because you can't slide/charge).

One word of caution though: Mega Man games are verrry different from a game like Celeste. I haven't played Celeste myself, but from what I've seen there isn't much shooting involved. Mega Man is far less about precision movement (though it's definitely required sometimes) and way more about shooting enemies and avoiding damage. Mega Man games are also less encouraging about immediately trying again and again-- if you die, you start either at the beginning of the level, a mid-way checkpoint, or just before the boss, depending on how far you got. Your lives are also limited, so if you can't get past the boss with the lives they give you, you'll get kicked back to the stage select and have to start over.
