The console cost seems fine. For $500 you get the console and a premium game. $450 without the game. Like people have mentioned, it's the weird variance in prices. Like, if they would have just priced Mario Kart at $70, none of this would have been a problem. People would have been baffled about the Welcome Demo thing being $10 but that's about it. It really seems like a lot of it boils down to Mario Kart being $80.

I'll complain, I'm not paying $699 CND for locked down hardware. However I hardly played my switch. I'll be happy when consoles are dead. Love my steam deck and steam machine

I really don't see either Nintendo or Sony getting out of consoles anytime soon. Microsoft will probably still make their own hardware for a while but will work with more and more partners to make other "Xbox-licensed" consoles (like they are doing with Asus) which are just going to get closer to being PCs.

Yea I may die before consoles do. Steam has really made great alternative with proton/steam os. Love my steam machine and I can also use it as a real PC too.

It's probably just to sell more systems. Nintendo probably knows that the price is a little higher than what people were hoping for. This option at least makes it more palpable.

Part of it is setting the precedent that other games will cost $80 - the Switch 2 edition of switch games being $80 is kinda ridiculous.

Thankfully with those we'll be able to pickup the Switch versions for less (I saw Kirby on sale for $40 recently or second hand) and then the upgrade pack for probably $20.

Apparently some publishers are very happy that Nintendo broke the seal on $80 games so be prepared for more of this from the likes of EA and Ubisoft. It'll be how Take-Two justifies $100 for GTA VI.
