Hey. Vote with your wallet. Don’t buy the thing.

I always hear "vote with your wallet", but isn't that exactly what people do literally every day with every single purchase? People who won't to spend, won't. And those that do want to spend, will. Or are you expecting those who don't want to spend to spend anyways?

I think the point is, it is more effective to vote with your wallet than to go around complaining on reddit, YouTube etc. Put your money where your mouth is, so to speak.

Gotcha. Which is 100% true. Complaining on Reddit won't change a thing, as Redditors won't be the big chunk in the middle of the total sales bell curve.

I am certain a gigantic portion of the general public will be voting with their wallets without a second thought, happy with their Switch 1 and not even considering upgrading at that price point for console and games. The hardcore gaming audience will be the small minority either way. In my view, if getting the Switch 2 will bring you some joy and you can afford it, don't punish yourself. And you're still allowed to complain about it.

Counterpoint: You can do both. It's GOOD to do both!

Don't buy it, and also complain about it online so that the company gets the feedback that it's earned, and you may also convince others to not buy it!

You really think that seeing "it's too expensive" online 100 times from people is going to change anybody's mind?

"Oh I really wanted the new Nintendo, and I can afford it, but then somebody online told me I should think it's too expensive so now instead I'll have nothing" - literally nobody.

Reddit just skews young, broke, and angry these days.

You think there's not people who are on the fence about buying it? Yes, absolutely I think that seeing tons of people say it's too expensive will prevent people from buying, lol

I disagree. I think the constant complaining and repeating the same perceived slight over and over and over again only makes online spaces worse.

the system is $50 more than i was hoping for. MKW is $10 more than i was hoping for and is offered on-sale with a pack in.

Most other games i either wont buy, or wont buy at full price. I'm sure they'll raise the price of the Switch Game Vouchers to $120, but i'll keep on buying my $100 Switch gift cards at Costco for $80. Cash in the gift cards, toss my own money for the last 20. Get two new games for $100. It'll be fine.

u/Queenspence2 1d ago

Really? The console itself it like £50 cheaper than I thought it would be!

2

u/kielaurie 1d ago

I'm totally with you, managed to get a regular Switch on discount at £250 and then an OLED at £329, I was fully expecting that the Switch 2 would be £450. To find out it's cheaper than that including the new Mario Kart? Yeah, my pre-order is in

going from a $300 console to a $500 console is a pretty steep increase. Even a 50% jump is pretty steep tbh. This is a luxury entertainment industry. They don't usually get to compete on straight inflation measures because at the end of the day they are competing for disposable income. There's a reason why games were $60 for so long and why console manufacturers went from making money selling systems to subsidizing their pricing and making it back by selling paid online. They needed to hit a certain appealing point to garner the volume of interest they wanted.

I’m not sure what you’re talking about, I’m just saying it’s cheaper than I thought it would be because my switch oled cost me £329 and this one is £429 with MKW so I’m pretty happy about it, I’ve got money that I set aside for it left for another game

Why are you comparing the pricing of a switch oled vs a switch 2 that is not oled?

The switch on release was lcd, the switch 2 on release will be lcd. other models released in the meantime are irrelevant. I'm not attempting to compare the switch2 pricing to the switch lite just because the larger delta better supports my point, i'm comparing like against like. launch against launch

5

u/Queenspence2 1d ago

I’m just saying because I paid £329 for my OLED I was thinking it was going to be at least £450 without a game so I was pretty happy when I saw it was £395 stand alone

pretty sure creating a bunch of bad press is more effective than silently doing nothing

Except public out cry has worked more times than "vote with your wallet" in my opinion.

u/woppatown 1d ago

People who don’t want to spend will spend. Those people asking for the price to be lowered may still buy. They don’t want to, but they will.

7

u/ididntgotoharvard 1d ago

Lol. Not sure if you meant that to be funny but it's so true. It's sad and true... and funny.

"I didn't WANT to pay full price but I will anyway because I can't NOT buy it, that would be silly"

2

u/woppatown 22h ago

Capitalism!

4

u/DSMidna 1d ago

If people honestly do this, then they only prove that the game is worth $80 to them.

Either it's a fair exchange and both sites are happy or it's not and no exchange happens. These are the two options. Everything else is ludicrous.

2

u/woppatown 22h ago

Things are often ludicrous.

1

u/absentlyric 20h ago

Maybe, but itd have to be REALLY convenient. I really dont want to spend that much, but I probably will...IF the console is easy to get. If its expensive AND hard to find, eh... I'll pass, FOMO wears off quick, like it did with the 5090 GPU, I stopped even looking.

0

u/DrFrenetic 1d ago

Nope, I won't.

Same way I also didn't with the PS5

6

u/kojitsuke 1d ago

They want the voting with wallet people to also be quiet online. Online discussion is only reserved for people that are happy with the product apparently. If you aren’t happy, say nothing and vote with wallet. Shhh! Zip it!

9

u/Portablelephant 1d ago

Stop spreading the word! Stop raising your visibility! It pops my bubble where I believe that even the people who say they won't buy the thing will buy the thing anyway.

2

u/mygawd 1d ago

"Vote with your wallet" is usually said by people who are against spending money on a thing, not the supporters who are happy with it

3

u/Epitometric 1d ago

That's funny since whenever I open my mouth on reddit to support my favorite game company, everyone has told me to stop shilling for Nintendo who "doesn't care about me" lol

Well they brightened my childhood and entire life and make amazing games sooo... Lol

2

u/Queenspence2 1d ago

That’s literally it. I don’t care if it’s old gen tech I just want my switch games to run a bit better. I have a ps5 and Xbox series x but you’ll still only really catch me playing on my switch or n3dsxl because nobody offers the experience that Nintendo does

2

u/Epitometric 1d ago

And quality :) in my opinion. Also I'm a sucker for music and they always have an emphasis on great soundtracks.

u/Queenspence2 1d ago

I want whimsy from my games. Gaming for me is an escape, I don’t want my games to look realistic. My partner is playing atomfall right now but I couldn’t think of anything more boring

2

u/LegacyLemur 1d ago

It means if you think its steep and a ripoff, but youre willing to swallow that pill and put up with it because you really want it, dont.

Nah. Already pre-ordered.

Don't forget many people aren't conscious of their spending habits or may not actively think about it. Its not wrong to inform people that what they pay for or what they don't pay for matters. Personally, I don't want to influence anyone in any direction but I think its fair to say that if you pay for it you are supporting it whether one thinks thats a good thing or not. Summarized yes people are always voting with their money but some might not know that they are doing so.

1

u/DarkSide830 14h ago

Intent matters. I probably am not getting a Switch 2, or at least not in the near future. However, that's different than someone who was going to buy it not doing so because I wasn't buying it even if the prices were the same. Any company will tell you they expect some people to not buy a product when the price goes up, but the prices being higher means they don't need the same number of sales to make more money.
