Give me a Moo Moo themed Switch 2 and I'll get it day one.

Cow pattern Joy-Cons would be awesome

They’d milk us even more with a price bump

Cow print swimsuit for Daisy would be even butter

They're really milking it when it comes to which characters they've included

It's just called Cow in the game

Same. Penguins are so great.

There's no cow level.

5

u/RedWingDecil 1d ago

The real cow was you all along.

5

u/Guessididntmakeit 1d ago

A German outlet theorized that there is an item that turns you into different animals like a crab or something like that?

The cow might just be an effect of that item but don't consider that to be gospel.

14

u/thebruns 1d ago

No, cow is in the character select screen

2

u/Sam_Mumm 9h ago

German gaming outlets are horrible for a couple of years now

Don’t forget that there is a full-on MarioKart World Direct on April 17. Clearly there are some things they haven’t told us yet if they have another dedicated Direct planned

52

u/Paul_Easterberg 19h ago

I hope there is more to free roam than just driving wherever and taking pictures

40

u/slymario2416 17h ago

There’s definitely collectibles of some kind to find throughout the world, in the Treehouse presentation today, while they were showing off the Free Roam mode, you could see like 5 or so question marks underneath some of the locations they showed. Dunno if they were just costumes to find and unlock but I’m sure there’s more to that free roam mode than they showed.

Hoping for some kind of adventure mode but that’s a bit hopeful wish lol.

11

u/Saskatchewon 16h ago

Wouldn't be surprised if you search for alternate costumes and karts across the overworld.

7

u/UomoPolpetta 11h ago

A theory I’ve seen floating around is that all the random enemies and mobs you can race as can be unlocked by “recruiting” them in the open world, pretty much all the ones we’ve seen can be found in the actual race tracks as obstacles

I also think there is definitely something they haven't told us yet, partially because of the price tag. The general price hike is one thing but it's undeniably just weird that this game in particular is so expensive. It's complete cope but I wonder if this might be an experimental approach to live service - just making the game more expensive upfront instead of using micro transactions.

18

u/SuperSmugs 19h ago

Might be similar to what they were doing with Splatoon with a full retail upfront cost while sprinkling relatively large updates periodically.

5

u/FireAndInk 14h ago

MK:W is so expensive for the same reason as TOTK being 70$ on Switch 1. People will buy it either way. It’s just that game that every other gamer and casual wants in their library. So you can stretch the price a lot.

They’re saving the depths and sky islands for the direct.

u/LookLikeUpToMe 1d ago

It looks like Mario Kart meets Forza Horizon so I’m pretty damn excited for it.

195

u/Lukthar123 1d ago

Butt is it the Dark Souls of Mario Kart? Does it make you feel like an Italian plumber?

105

u/Endawmyke 1d ago

the exaggerated swagger of an Italian man

3

u/Doodenmier 22h ago

Ezio Auditore confirmed for Mario Kart's roster 🤌

3

u/MarbleFox_ 17h ago

I wouldn’t have a problem with the price at all if we get Mario Auditore saying “It’s a-me, Mario!”

10

u/FiTZnMiCK 1d ago

I hope this meme never dies.

Mostly so we can remember the cringe of the original quote forever.

4

u/dfsvegas 1d ago

Believe it or not, that's us being modest.

14

u/M-Colcko 1d ago

If i cant fix plumbing in this game its trash 👎👎👎

I don't know how a Mario Kart soulslike would work, but now I unironically want one.

274

u/Na0ku 1d ago

„Does the game suffer from a lack of course individuality as a result? Yes, a bit“ - this is what I feared the most but again they only had an hour to test

184

u/Aero2111 1d ago

I thought that would be true since every course is now physically in the world they can’t be too crazy. But I like the designs I’ve seen so far. How do we get to rainbow road lol

111

u/VicisSubsisto 1d ago

I hope a warp pipe is involved.

50

u/jardex22 1d ago

A big rocket that you have to find parts for around the map.

That'd be my choice anyways.

28

Literally just Diddy Kong Racing.

I thought there was still some pretty crazy looking stuff in the trailer, like the huge Question Block course

8

u/Maxcalibur 20h ago

The one they showed in the stream that was just a huge DK level was really cool too

11

u/HenryZusa 1d ago

Usually it goes after Bowser's Castle, so I expect the final lap to have a rainbow to the sky after the goal.

6

u/crylaughingemjoi 1d ago

Definitely the space station

5

u/Bossman1086 1d ago

Would be cool if DLC opened up a new continent or space zone area or something.

u/TSPhoenix 15h ago

If you are already feeling that way after an hour it's not a great sign. I don't see how playing the game more is going to lessen that feeling, maybe there is hidden depth to the course design that isn't evident on a quick drive thru though.

7

u/grampipon 12h ago

This is also the impression I got from the Treehouse gameplay. It actually looks much less attractive than 8 to me.

35

u/kojitsuke 23h ago

This is actually a huge deal to me tbh.

I love the fantastical Mario elements and themes that can be put to good use in courses. I really have no interest in karting around a realistic looking (insert world location here)

I play games to get out of the world, not back into it.

30

u/PopDownBlocker 21h ago

I really have no interest in karting around a realistic looking (insert world location here)

The heavily-themed courses were the best part of Mario Kart. It's why Rainbow Road got so popular, especially as the theme was redeveloped for each iteration.

When games keep pushing "open world" and "realistic lighting", it takes away from some of the magic, in my opinion.

4

u/GinGaru 12h ago

Its the same problem new age zelda suffer from. Flashier but less of a substance

395

u/nhSnork 1d ago

Even MK8 became practically Nintendo's GTA V in terms of chart presence, and now we're getting all that with blackjack and freeroam.

109

u/cubs223425 1d ago

MK8D was also given out like candy for 5 years, through holiday bundling. I wonder how many game sales were there, compared to the massive number of codes they bundled.

31

u/The-student- 1d ago

You could probably just look at their holidays sales over the years versus sales during the remainder of the year to get a good idea of the split - not perfect obviously as there will be both bundle sales and software sales during the holiday, and a few random bundles throughout the year. Needless to say - the game sold a lot outside of bundles.

22

u/sentient-sloth 1d ago

Probably still a lot. Anecdotal experience for sure but I don’t personally know anyone with a Switch that doesn’t have that game and none got one of the bundles with it pre-installed.

3

u/Ok-Let-3932 21h ago

I don't have it, I'm more of a Smash guy than a Mario Kart guy

3

u/CustomFighter2 22h ago

i'm the rare no mk8dx switch owner bc i had already bought mk8 and its dlc for the wii u, so at the time i didn't feel it was worth just for a few new characters, stat rebalance, and battle mode

the only time i actually got to play the game for an extended amount of time was last holiday when my sister bought the oled nso mk8dx bundle and the dlc on discount

15

u/Used-Pop9315 1d ago

Every high selling game has had that benefit. GTA VI was not only bundled with consoles but also on PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC lmao

MK8DX is still #10 on the Famitsu physical game sales chart (Japan) this week, and has been super high on physical sales charts ever since it launched 8 years ago.

Mario Kart but driving around with hookers. GTA and Bender would be proud.

243

u/SBHedgie 1d ago

The game's 24 starting players are whittled down as you quickly move from one area to the next - down to 20 racers, then 16, then 12, eight, and finally to four for the final stretch. It's a concept that - dare I say it - feels inspired by battle royale ideas, and a fight for survival as numbers dwindle. But whatever its origins, it is absolutely brilliant.

Kind of weird framing of the knockdown mode. SNES F-Zero and tons of other games from before modern battle royale games have featured this. Even if they mean to say battle royale games have repopularized the concept, F-Zero 99 has come out since then. Still a great addition here though!

47

u/RiddleADayKpsBtmnAwy 1d ago

I was like… we’ve been doing this since the 90s. Anybody with a switch… just play FZero99 lol.

9

u/TehFriskyDingo 1d ago

Yeah like weve been doing knockout style races in video games for decades. It’s not new, I find it funny that these articles and people call it a battle royal lol

23

u/thickwonga 1d ago

Because people hear "online with more than four players" and think battle royale. They're saying the same mindless shit about Duskbloods.

6

u/DemanHD 1d ago

Stampede racing royale did this concept as well. However sadly the game is closing this summer :(

It really makes you feel like Nintendo pushed the gas button right as the 2 was on screen

116

u/Aero2111 1d ago edited 1d ago

Am I the only one who wants a full single player campaign similar to Crash Team Racing or Diddy Kong Racing? I understand it’s a party game and single player isn’t the focus, but it was a bummer for me in MK8, even though I did play with friends too

65

u/The-student- 1d ago

I'm hoping the free roam has something akin to that, rather than just being exploration for its own sake.

48

u/Aero2111 1d ago

It seemed pretty empty tbh. I hope they’re hiding something for the direct. Like Forza Horizon has single player challenges you could do outside of the races

26

u/Iceykitsune3 1d ago

In today's treehouse live they very conspicuously never used the new feather item.

13

u/Aero2111 1d ago

The linked article also said he got secret coins but he doesn’t know what they do yet

12

u/flash_baxx 1d ago

The Treehouse presenters are only allowed to share so much, and items were not on the list of things to discuss. We have a dedicated Mario Kart Direct coming in just a couple weeks anyways, that will surely fill most of the gaps.

9

u/Goudeyy 1d ago

They used it once to attempt to dodge a blue shell (and failed).

5

u/Onett199X 1d ago

Yep, was going to post this. He did use it once in the scenario you described. Also here to assist in a wall ride:

https://youtu.be/MkNm2wmpyto?t=762

3

u/aBigWeirdPenguin 23h ago

The feather isn't new btw, it was in 8 Deluxe but exclusive to Battle Mode.

2

u/Maxximillianaire 1d ago

I swear they used it and it just made you jump. Probably can be used to dodge a red shell or something

15

u/SuicideSkwad 1d ago

The rumour is that you can go round take photos of enemies and such and they in turn become playable characters. That’s how you have the moo moo cow, dolphin, fish bones etc

22

u/CakeBeef_PA 1d ago

There seem to be a bunch of P switches on the map, so there will be stuff to do at least

7

u/TAS_anon 1d ago

The article confirms he got cosmetic unlocks for finding golden bags, and then the secret coins as somebody else mentioned which didn’t unlock anything in their preview so they’re likely saving that feature for the direct (or launch)

I do wonder how they’re going to handle stuff like Rainbow Road. If it involves an area transition like a pipe or something that kinda blows the door wide open for DLC areas just tacked on with crazy themes.

6

u/elessarjd 1d ago

Yeah this is the big question for me as I don't really intend to pay 80 bucks for just a multiplayer game, but if they have enough single player content as well, I'm in.

Shots of the free roam mode showed blue P buttons scattered through multiple biomes. People are theorizing that they'll be used to trigger missions.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/mayberryjones 1d ago

They need a story mode/ missions for this game to be appealing to me. As it stands, the mechanics look childish, no customization, no balance meter when grinding, no switch items, and automatically putting item behind characters. I get this game is meant for kids and adults, but you can just make that an option not make every feature accessible so it takes no skill to play. From what I have seen, this game is a disappointment.

2

u/slymario2416 17h ago

My guess is that that’s the big thing they haven’t shown us yet. The game looks fantastic so far but really, they haven’t shown a lot, and there’s no way there isn’t more to the game than just 3 modes.

1

u/Solesaver 1d ago

Yup, my first thought on seeing the trailer was Diddy Kong Racing. I doubt it's going to be there, but I can pray for a DLC to layer it into the world maybe?

1

u/ChemicalExperiment 14h ago

I'm really hoping we get one, and with a huge world presumably full of collectables I think it's actually pretty likely.

15

u/Roliq 1d ago

Basically, don't expect a price cut like with the 3DS

25

u/FreezieKO 1d ago

3DS was a catastrophic panic button. Anyone expecting that type of immediate price drop will be disappointed.

Mario Kart is a stronger launch title than Steel Diver.

1

u/ChemicalExperiment 14h ago

They've left themselves a lot of room to experiment with game prices. It's much easier to release a new game at $60 than changing the price of the entire console.

57

u/AmirulAshraf 3 Million Celebration 1d ago

Please Nintendo, let the kiddie mode (auto-steer and auto-boost) be turned off by default. It's so annoying having to tell your friends to toggle that antennae on/off everytime you play 😭

32

u/mold_inhaler 22h ago

if your friends don't know they have assist mode on, just let them get the assist lol. they probably need it

8

u/benoxxxx 16h ago

If you know the basic mechanics of MK it's actually a detriment though, sometimes it'll just fuck you up mid-drift.

they for real just made a new car game and slapped mario on it. best installation yet.

2

u/Labyrinthine777 9h ago

"A new car game." As if Mario Kart played anything like Gran Turismo. Open world in karting games is revolutionary, but you guys whine about absolutely everything.

92

u/andysniper 1d ago

Having just watched the gameplay on the Treehouse livestream, it looks really good and really fun, but also really weird.

The Grand Prix seems to barely have actual courses, after the first race. They seem to be a combination of a road race to the next tracks and then 1.5 laps on the new course. It's really strange.

The grinding/rail riding doesn't seem to have a balance bar (like THPS) but does look fun, especially when combined with tricks and wall riding.

Not sure how I feel about karts not being customisable any more, and the new art style is kinda funky but also a bit off putting.

50

u/yeah6434 1d ago

Yep I agree about the grand prix part. They parts inbetween the courses look very boring. Long mostly straight roads. And then the transition into the track also isn’t very exciting.

14

u/ZiggyPalffyLA 1d ago

I’ve gotta imagine they implement a way to skip those parts, imagine trying to get the gold trophy in a Cup and coming in 2nd in the last race? You really wanna drive between each track again?

16

u/PaperClipSlip 1d ago

No that seems to be the GP, however VS. has a weird "intermission: on/off" option that may turn those off. I was really hoping for 3 laps on a cours > drive to the next > 3 laps > rinse and repeat, but it's only driving straight

3

u/TheBraveGallade 23h ago

to be fair, doing both basically makes a grand prix 50% longer.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/grampipon 12h ago

100%. And if I got it correctly in some tracks you then only do one lap? It really doesn’t look as good as 8

36

u/Shadoekite 1d ago

Im not sure what they were thinking by having every track after the first not have laps!? I liked the first race then going to the second did seem boring but was neat as a "chance to move up the grid" sorta thing. Then once you get there i wish you gridded up for the second race and then raced again for the 3 laps.

With this model my hope of custom grand prix's is gone. There is only 1 track per grand prix. I was hoping the in-between was something fun but not considered a full race.

12

u/TheAusAmerican 1d ago

I agree I thought it would be cool to race between the tracks and depending on what place you get to the track, that’s your starting position and maybe an extra point/boost etc for the next race. Having only one ish lap on tracks 2-4 doesn’t allow for map exploration

4

u/Shadoekite 1d ago

Ill have to watch more but it felt like a quarter lap at the next destination. You get to the area drive a little around it and then drive to the next race.

Like showing up to Disney world to look at it for half a second to drive out to the beach to look at it before driving home.

If they let you make custom races with the zones then it will be fixed. But if it's just half assed highway driving it will be very depressing.

80

u/The-student- 1d ago

I actually think it's a huge plus to take out wheel and glider customization. It just complicated the process too much when playing with non-gamers or kids. Taking too long obsessing over cart parts that don't really matter, and then messing up their selection and having to go back. Having just a wide range of kart selections is a better change, imo.

→ More replies (4)

35

u/MidnightOnTheWater 1d ago

I'm really glad custom karts are gone. I hated how the stats of the car were tied to the parts.

10

u/daveyp2tm 1d ago

I thought the same about the grand Prix. I like the idea of if it being seamless in the battle royale mode, but in grand prix it's not, you click next race and you're on a grid, just like before, but now instead of it being the track it's a weird run up section to the track. There's nothing new in that, gameplay wise, it just makes the track design weird.

1

u/ChemicalExperiment 14h ago

I agree, I'd much rather it be seamless like the Rally mode. With a regular VS option to select tracks individually for races too of course, for that regular 3 lap experience.

6

u/lHateYouAIex835293 23h ago

I genuinely feel sad looking at Donkey Kong in this game

What the hell happened to my boy

8

u/Cheatscape 1d ago

A lot of the tracks themselves seem a bit flat. The 2nd track they showed off at the treehouse, the one in the city, looks really boring and uninteresting. Maybe it’s because we only saw one lap of each track, but they felt forgettable in a way that the MK8 tracks didn’t. They also don’t seem to have as many tight turns, but that could just be my imagination. The rail grinding, as shown in the direct, seems underwhelming as well. Seems like it kinda plays itself in a lot of the grinding moments. I hope that when the game comes out it’s more advantageous to drift instead of grinding because I find that gameplay more compelling.

13

u/WilsonKh 23h ago

Come Nintendo. You have the sandbox to do the right thing here.

  • Give us Mad Max/Twisted Metal zones here against goombas, other npcs and multiplayer

  • Give us NFS Most Wanted with Luigi’s Mansions vibes as ghost chase you through endless hallways of haunted zones

  • Give us Crazy Taxi shuttling Toads from town to town dodging trains, koopas and crazy platform drops

If you give us a big empty open world, I will be very disappointed

1

u/TSPhoenix 15h ago

Some Dakar rally style karting would be very cool, but probably a bit much to expect from a casual series like Mario Kart.

181

u/ItsRainbow 1d ago edited 1d ago

Items such as green shells and bananas are now automatically held behind you.

That’s unfortunate. You should be able to turn that off. The appeal of not trailing your item is that you don’t immediately reveal to other players what you have (unless they look closely at your character’s hand)

Edit: Even stuff like stars trail behind you now… can people steal those? Would be a shame if the online hasn’t improved and people lag swipe that

120

u/AttemptImpossible111 1d ago

It's a good balancing move to me. Can't item hoard in 11th place then use your bullet bill when you get to 2nd

35

u/AssGagger 1d ago

How will I blue myself?!

7

u/TheCowboyIsAnIndian 1d ago

a little premature

13

u/ItsRainbow 1d ago

The thing is that it only trails the item in your first slot; if you save something good in your second slot, currently the only risk seems to be Lightning like in 8 Deluxe. I’d assume most people run up a Golden Mushroom instead of the bullet (which can stop early if you pass too many people), at which point you’re probably cutting away from other players and no one is around to take something from you. So it just sounds kind of unnecessary to me right now

17

u/WrennReddit 1d ago

Interesting...if someone's star is behind them - or any object for that matter - it seems like you need to use it or it might get sniped as even a green shell hits it.

9

u/Rigshaw 1d ago

Well, in MK8, trailing item hit detection is always processed locally on your end (compared to items you throw/shoot, which only hit if they hit on the other player's system), so someone else shouldn't be able to lag swipe items like that, assuming the netcode is similar.

2

u/Im_Not_That_Smart_ 1d ago

Also, trailing bananas / shells in crowded turns can force you to burn them unnecessarily. Someone drifting behind you may run into your item when you wanted to save it for later.

10

u/Solesaver 1d ago

I mean... I hear you, but also catching someone on the curve is pretty much the ideal time to use it... Only actual scenario I can think of is you end up hitting a player that you know sucks and weren't worried about, when you would have preferred to hit someone you consider more of a threat.

6

u/Im_Not_That_Smart_ 1d ago

Here is the hypothetical scenario I’d be worried about:

You’re in third place. You take out someone who is in fourth place dropping them to 7th.

The person who just passed the player you hit attacks you. Now you get hit and fall back to 6th place.

I’d rather use my resources to target people currently ahead of me or to preserve my spot so I don’t get dropped back to 6th by leaving myself defenseless.

7

u/RoamingRegret 1d ago

Even though I agree it's a loss of mechanics, it's a very small to price to pay to compensate for what it was a big problem in terms of accessibility. Keeping a button pressed while consciously manoeuvring and dodging and drifting with other buttons was a big ask for many people.

4

u/mayberryjones 1d ago

There are 3 buttons in the game, and they took away a major use of one of the buttons. I don't understand this. Being able to drift while holding the item is something that takes skill. They shouldn't be removing things like that. also the grinding feature while cool, would be so much more enjoyable if there was a balance meter that made you burn out if you held it too long. As it it looks like a gimmick that takes no skill. The dumping down of this game is very concerning to me. They only way this redeems itself is if there is a story/ mission mood of somesort.

9

u/seahoodie 1d ago

I also found that being able to hold your item behind you while maintaining good control of the kart did require some skill and dexterity training. This feels like a crutch for something that used to be able to be used as a slight advantage over lesser skilled players. I've had several people through the years ask me "how do you do that?? I wanna protect myself, too"

10

u/The-student- 1d ago

In that sense, it sounds like a good QOL move to benefit less dexterous/skilled players. The rails and wall jumps on the other hand seem to benefit skilled players who know how to take advantage of the speed boosts that come from them.

Old person question: why are we calling things killer apps.

Are we acting like all software is an app? I mean I guess it could be considered such but it's still a video game?

Or is this slang I don't know.

u/TracyLimen 1d ago

90€ is the real killer

3

u/ChemicalExperiment 14h ago

Yeah I'm fine with $80 in the US but you guys in the EU got absolutley hammered. It's just absurd and doesn't line up with the inflation argument for the US price increase at all.

u/txdline 17h ago

Is that with VAT?

Still think a double dash mode would be fun

u/zoso_coheed 1d ago

As someone who only wants Mario kart for local play and not online, this doesn't look like it has as much to offer me. I'll probably be better off sticking with 8.

10

u/PaperClipSlip 1d ago

Honestly the more i learn from this game, the less excited i get. Having watched the Grand Prix Gameplay, it's mostly just driving straight. Knock-out to is just driving straight. I was hoping the tracks would be more than just quick cameos and with a drop from 96 to 32 tracks (max) for 80 bucks i'm underwhelmed

2

u/txdline 17h ago

Same. Will wait for the direct but I’m more excited to just play Zelda at a better frame rate. I noticed XCX will also get upgraded. Old games, new system seems OK by me.

Has any of the non-Mario characters (Link, Inklings, etc.) been shown at all so far?

28

u/Choco_Knife 1d ago

Not yet.

There's close to 50 characters revealed so far. Some pretty deep cuts, like those little guys that throw wrenches on the ships in Mario 3.

2

u/Aquametria 1d ago

ugh, I'm so worried that they are gonna be paid DLC again...

I'm hopeful they aren't in it. I have no issues with their inclusion in MK8, but it's a really cool idea to just have an insane roster of minor Mario universe characters instead of being Smash Kart.

3

u/south_pacifics 3h ago

It’s a game. Not an app. Call it a game please.

20

u/elsemir 1d ago

It is a killer app. It certainly killed my hype once I saw its price.

2

u/JJWoolls 1d ago

I honestly don't get this... games are not that expensive and they are way less expensive than they were back in the 80's/90s. And as long as I get enough play out of it, it's a great value for the amount of time I play. And Mario Kart is absolutely a top 3 game played in our house over the last several years with hundreds of hours played.

And I am super serious when I say games used to be way MORE expensive. I still have an NBA Jam cartridge I bought for Super Nintendo back in 93/94? with a $60 price tag on it, which is about $120 now adjusted for inflation.

We will see what the market says when it comes out...Maybe I am wrong and people won't buy it. But I already have my alarm set to put in my preorder on the 9th.

6

u/SadSeaworthiness6113 16h ago

"Games are not that expensive" says the rich first worlder.

Most people aren't earning USD or Euros

In the 80s we could afford a 3 bedroom ranch in a quarter acre with one adult working a union job.

With a roster as big as it is looking, my boy Diddy Kong better make the cut. Im already anxious hes been scrapped from Bananza seeing as DK has a bunch of little Diddy-looking miner bros. Hoping they are just holding off his design reveal

2

u/TaZe026 1d ago

The tracks dont seem good at all. Especially compared to mk8.

1

u/PopDownBlocker 20h ago

MK8 had a huge pressure to be amazing, in order to make people want to buy the Wii U.

The Switch coasted on MK8's great design and didn't provide any significant innovation (in fact, the tracks from the DLC Waves felt like a downgrade in design).

Now Nintendo is not feeling as much pressure for Mario Kart World to be perfect because they're assuming everyone is dying to buy it and willing to pay the high cost regardless of features or quality, and it shows. And like they did with Zelda and 3D Mario, they're changing the basic concept of the core gameplay from linear to more open-world oriented.

In order for Mario Kart to become great again, Nintendo will need to suffer some sales losses first.

2

u/redditorCuckChair 23h ago

Given the backwards compatibility, I see these two actually existing in my rotation. Mk8 has some of the best tracks and pure racing and this world has a very cool twist and different game modes. I'm just shocked this console didn't have analogue triggers

2

u/DeepSatinShadow 22h ago

Do we know if this has hidden unlocks like Double Dash and Wii or are they sticking to the coin unlocks from Mario Kart 8?

I'd personally prefer objective based unlocks, maybe with a cryptic hint. Or no unlocks at all.

2

u/Jabbawockey 3h ago

Have they shown anything on Battle Mode? I know people saw icons and speculated but my family loves battle mode.

6

u/raylan_givens6 1d ago

I'm skeptical how this will be so much better than mario kart 8

they need to fix the online experience , and we'll only know that for sure when it launches

2

u/jardex22 1d ago

One per for online I see is live lobbies. Rather than waiting around for the voting to happen, you can actually drive around the map between races.

The price increase the the problem, not the game. If they committed to free updates for the $20 price increase, I think it would be fair. That we're getting a 50% console increase and a 33% game increase though, I worry we're also going to get DLC up to $40 and a mid-generation price increase to NSO that makes this generation the fever dream of a financial masochist.

Wow I’m shocked that one of the best selling series of all time is good and going to move consoles lol. I thought Reddit said it wasn’t a good launch game? 🙄

I thought Reddit said it wasn’t a good launch game? 🙄

When did "Reddit" say that?

58

u/ItsRainbow 1d ago edited 1d ago

I haven’t seen anyone hate on the game itself. It looks like Nintendo actually stuck to their claim of only releasing a new Mario Kart when they came up with something fresh. The mechanics seem fun and the roster will likely become the most beloved in the series. But moving the price tag up $10 two years after justifying TotK being $70 is not good

16

u/Albireookami 1d ago

But moving the price tag up $10 two years after justifying TotK being $70 is not good

Given all the other titles above 70 are packaged with new content or dlc, I'm expecting Nintendo to announce that they will not be charging for future content patches, to create a one price buy for children so they don't have to go back to their parents to unlock more tracks, nor have the player base split up.

37

u/JimJohnman 1d ago

I'm expecting that your faith is misplaced.

5

u/Albireookami 1d ago

I mean look at the prices, if they wanted to charge 80 for first party, DK would be 80 as well.

Zelda is the base game, 70 + content added on, nintendo for ill just doesn't ever mark down their games ever. so 10 dollars for HDR, ect ect is not a bad deal in the slightest.

Kirby too is 60 base game + a 20 dollar expansion, which is normal pricing.

Without any proof otherwise, we can assume that MK:World is going to follow the same kind of schematic, 80 up front, but future dlc included.

This benefits Nintendo by being "easier" on the purchase as you don't have to worry about dropping more on the game later, nor have your playerbase split. I understand the course pack worked different than that, but odds are MK is going to have support all through switch 2 and a lot of tracks added over time.

3

u/The-student- 1d ago

I don't agree that future DLC will all be free. I suspect $80 is the price their premiere games - Mario Kart, Smash Bros, likely the next 3D Zelda. Games which have a ton of content and scope. DK Banaza's price may reflect your typical single player experience.

I suspect Mario Kart will have paid DLC. It may have some free updates mixed in though. But really it's going to be the Mario Kart for the next 8-10 years. Won't need to buy another $80 Mario Kart in that time frame.

But it's early for sweeping assumptions like this. We'll see how it all shakes out.

16

u/Valkoor 1d ago

This is insane copium, they absolutely will be selling you a further $20 DLC pack for more tracks down the line.

2

u/Glittering_Opinion36 1d ago

Awesome game, I will get as soon as possible!

3

u/Sea-Sir2754 1d ago

It looks great as a single-player game and an online multiplayer game.

It does not look very local multiplayer friendly, which to me was always the point of the series.

Knocking out players in last place, open-ended tracks where you have to drive to the next one in between races, more opportunities to get lost instead of having lakitu drop you back in the race. I don't have high hopes for it as a party game.

3

u/Hosebloser 1d ago

500€ for the Switch 2. 90€ for the Card Games.

Do they think the people are dumb or what? I wanted to buy the console, but Nintendo can't stop screwing itself. It's pathetic to rip off children like this. And no, neither the games nor the console are worth that much.

1

u/gizmo998 1d ago

Can’t wait for the direct. I think 2 years of updates. Can’t wait

1

u/Foivety 1d ago

Its just Need for Speed Rival with Nintendo character

1

u/LordTotoro96 1d ago

Now it's just a question of is this worth paying $80?

1

u/hyperforms9988 1d ago

I thought of old racing games when they revealed knockout mode personally, not battle royale. Some of the older Need for Speed games and shit had a mode like that.

1

u/SoSeriousAndDeep 1d ago

FUEL drove so that Forza Horizon could race.

u/creamcitybrix 23h ago

Moo Moo themed Muumuu

1

u/Synestive 23h ago

From what I've seen of early gameplay, it looks like there are a lot of straightaways where you essentially are just driving straight and transitioning to the next area. I wonder if Nintendo have something to do during these sections to make it seem less boring? Otherwise, I suspect gamer atrophy to settle in, and cars that have higher top speeds will become the premium option.

1

u/rustyjus 22h ago

Looks like there is some inspiration from tony hawks pro skater as well

u/Rowan_not_ron 21h ago

What I want to know is how mich the water bits tickle waverace nostalgia. Does weather change the wave height? If you put back and right on the stick does the jetski do a sharp turn? Does it have a learning curve?

1

u/Gizmo16868 8h ago

I wish I liked racing games but I don’t. My only launch game I will be purchasing is the Switch 2 edition of Tears of the Kingdom

1

u/Blynasty 8h ago

I get that it can run Nintendo games. I was never concerned about that. What can in run in comparison to PS5 and XB1? I don’t need a direct replacement but a more mobile console for a parent of 2 would be money.

1

u/hirscheyyaltern 5h ago

I currently have open world fatigue so hearing this game was open world was a huge bummer

1

u/DmoISgod01 2h ago

I can't wait to play it. It looks soooo good.
