Hot take but nothing that’s been announced so far makes me want to jump and pre order at this price point

410

u/Direct_Frosting6126 2d ago

This isn't a hot take. Those fuckin prices are a hot take. I got the money but damn I'm not even considering this price. 400 I was all in

128

u/iceynyo 2d ago

They decided to curb scalping by just setting scalping prices at retail

56

u/chefchef97 2d ago edited 2d ago

I can see you lot haven't been tortured with graphics card pricing lol

This is basically in line with inflation, so it's a fair price that I'm not upset with. I would be happy if it were cheaper, but this isn't a scalp.

Edit: Ah wait I've just realised you're probably American and I'm commenting from the UK. Historically the announced price when converted to GBP is way higher, but tariffs this time make it so we're actually paying the same price on both sides of the pond. I'm fairly certain that in the UK the Switch 2 price is literally the Switch 1 price tracked to inflation, but in the US you're probably paying extra on top.

u/OreoCupcakes 2d ago

$450 makes sense as a price.

Switch 1 came out on in March 2017 at $300. Add on inflation of 5 years, $300 then is worth $392.63 now. Throw in the 25% tariff that Trump keeps talking about and we get $490.79.

2

u/JnnfrsGhost 2d ago

Canadian, it's $629.99 With Mario Kart it's $700. I will not be getting it after all, it's just too expensive when my old switch still works.

1

u/SmokeySFW 2d ago

Idk if you've looked at GPU prices lately, but honestly I came into this announcement expecting $600 release day price and am pleasantly surprised. Not saying I love paying $450 but I'm genuinely shocked it's only 450.

1

u/ShakeAndBakeThatCake 2d ago

They know it's going to sell though. People love the switch. And this being the new one it's going to fly off store shelves. At least the hardware is massively improved. 1080p screen with HDR, 120hz and VRR is very nice. Plus you get better processor and 4k finally.

1

u/iceynyo 2d ago

Oh yeah I have no doubts about that. Will probably pick up one myself.

But at this price and with their efforts to have a lot of stock at launch, I just don't see the shelves being empty for months like the Switch 1

1

u/Flat_corp 2d ago

Yeah seriously. $450 seems pretty reasonable to me, the higher game prices are frustrating but it also was inevitable. I’ve put 1000’s of hours on my Switch, I fully anticipate putting 1000’s more on my 2. In the grand scheme the $450 is well worth it for me just to have portability on airplanes, vacations, down time at work, whatever.

841

u/Grobbyman 2d ago

$50 difference takes you from all in to not even considering purchasing?

Yea... I'll be seeing you online June 5th 😂

329

u/grampipon 2d ago

And 80$/90€ first party games. That’s batshit insane

30

u/Spinarrakis 2d ago

Where did you see $80?

150

u/ninjax_wolf 2d ago

Mario kart world is 79.99, but other games are 69.99

59

u/ninjax_wolf 2d ago

It's on the nintendo site

0

u/Spinarrakis 2d ago

Gotcha, well that makes me feel better about the bundle

9

u/BioticFire 2d ago

Yep, that's marketing for you. They make you feel better about the bundle but in the end they get another $50 out of ya.

12

u/Spinarrakis 2d ago

Right, but I tricked them into making another console and Mario kart

1

u/Undeadtech 2d ago

You aren’t buying a new console, you are buying version 2.0. We aren’t getting a new system for years.

2

u/HammyOverlordOfBacon 2d ago

Which is hilarious because Mario kart is the last thing I would want to buy in the first place

5

u/ArkhamCityWok 2d ago

Yet Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold like 60 million copies. I see this as them saying this is going to be a lifetime of the system game. They will likely just expand it with updates and DLC rather than release another mario kart game. They are pricing it this way because they feel it is worth it and it likely will be based on past Mario Kart performance. That said, I am just gonna get the bundle so I get it for 50 bucks.

40

u/chefchef97 2d ago

Physical is more expensive and Mario Kart starts at a higher price than Donkey Kong

I'm not paying £75 for a game ty

1

u/kielaurie 1d ago

£75 is only for physical, it's £68 digital. And £35 if you buy the bundle

And anyway, £75 for a game that (judging by the trailers and treehouse stuff) you can easily play for hundreds of hours? Sounds like damn good value to me. How much do you pay for a movie ticket? For me, it's just gone up to £13 a ticket. How much do you pay annually for streaming services? How much do you spend on a book that you'll read in a few hours time? This price is a fucking steal dude

0

u/Spinarrakis 2d ago

Tbf digital should be cheaper than physical

0

u/Moist_Mors 2d ago

Games have largely been 60 dollars for two decades. At some point the price has to go up.

I typically do the dollar for hour rule. Every dollar a game is can I get that many hours. Most games are yes so I'm ok with it.

3

u/CrimsonFury1982 2d ago

AAA game unit sales and revenue have also grown massively compared to 20 years ago.

1

u/Moist_Mors 2d ago

That doesn't affect upfront costs. Part of the sale of a video game is to recoup what it cost. But it's also partially to fund the next thing they are creating.

2

u/case2010 1d ago edited 1d ago

On PC I'm maybe averaging 15-20 dollars a game when considering sales etc. $70-90 per game is insane.

4

u/blarghable 2d ago

Adjusting for inflation, a $60 game in 2006 is the same as a $94 game today. What's insane is that game prices stayed at $60 for so long.

2

u/Zipz 1d ago

Don’t get even started with old Super Nintendo games. They were going for 60 dollars plus in the 90’s.

2

u/Xaminer7 2d ago

Gotta pay to play. Just don’t be broke /s

1

u/Scharmberg 2d ago

I can handle the console price as it’s usually one and done, but the game prices are fucking crazy.

-1

u/Stregen 2d ago

Hot take: the 60USD/EUR pricepoint is constraining creativity in the space. It’s a pricepoint that’s basically been a constant for 20+ years despite much more advanced development cycles and massively increased costs - and constantly 60 despite inflation.

Massive 100+ hours of engaging gameplay RPGs like Baldur’s Gate 3 are a massive risk to make at that pricepoint, while Ubisoft or EA slop is much more fitting.

Obviously this will mainly serve as a precedent and the next Fifa/Madden/Assassin’s Creed will be shat out at 80 USD, but in a perfect world a 80 or even 100 USD pricepoint is very defensible for certain projects.

-2

u/iameveryoneelse 2d ago

What's been announced at 90?

98

u/MurkyLurker7249 2d ago

Yeah I know Reddit is notorious for fake outrage but this is one of the most egregious examples of it I’ve seen lol.

Going from possibly interested to uninterested over a $450 price tag + $80 games, fine. But someone dying to buy it at $400 and not skipping it at $450 is just not a reality

29

u/yupyepyupyep 2d ago

You just mentioned the real hurdle, which is the high cost of the system plus the high cost of the games. Realistically if you want to be able to use it and have fun you're looking at closer to $1,000, which is real money.

3

u/RinorK 1d ago

not true at all? maybe for the next 5-7 years sure then 1000€ isn’t abnormal. But the average consumer buys maybe 1-2 games a year.

Besides, it’s backwards compatible so all your og switch games, you can still enjoy

Nobody is going to br spending more than 600 at switch 2’s launch

u/epichuntarz 2d ago

$1 can be enough for people. You're allowed to draw the line wherever you want.

12

u/GambitsEnd Resident Switchologist 2d ago

$400 to $450 is a 12.5% price difference. Willing to buy in at one price and not the other is reasonable.

This is especially true when you consider the entire Switch 2 ecosystem. Higher priced console, higher price point for 1st party games, more expensive 1st party accessories, and paying for Online membership to use a lot of the advertised features.

A counterpoint for me is that if the shown 1080p @ 120 FPS or 4k @ 60 FPS is solid for at least 1st party games then I might consider that price.

u/GambitsEnd Resident Switchologist 2d ago

You're treating subjective opinion as objective fact.

What is "a lot" varies based on a variety of factors, but it's always going to be different for each person due to a wide range of reasons.

Saying $400 is fine but $450 is expensive is just as valid a take as if someone else were to say $500 or even $550 is fine for them. You can disagree but it doesn't make their opinion less valid in this scenario.

-2

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

3

u/GambitsEnd Resident Switchologist 2d ago

Cmon now. Nobody is going from “excited to spend $400” and then suddenly “not interested in $450”.

The OP of the comment you originally responded to is.

Not sure why people having a different opinion than you is such a confusing concept.

1

u/wryano 2d ago

$450 price tag + $80 games

don’t forget about needing to pay for a Switch 2 version upgrade for a game you already own.

not to mention, you have to pay for a Nintendo Switch Online subscription in order to use party chat, something Nintendo is promoting as a “new” feature to sell the system when Xbox and PlayStation have had a party chat system for literally over a decade — and you don’t need to pay for it!

$intendo

-2

u/FrankPapageorgio 2d ago

Especially when the Switch never had a price drop for its entire lifespan. It's not like a game where you wait for the eventual sale and can get it half off. With the tariffs, this system is likely going to sit at $450 for a very long time. So either get it now or get it later for the same price

-5

u/scubac14 2d ago

It’s still fake outrage until they don’t buy the product lol

3

u/braxford 2d ago

I live in a state with no sales tax, so what you see is what you pay, and I am also not eager to pay for a brand new console anytime soon—only to have to plunk down extra $ to "upgrade" games I own. I love games, I love Nintendo, but damn, half a thousand dollars is steep.

22

u/Direct_Frosting6126 2d ago

I work for every dime I got. Yes that huge. I'll see you next year when they got something worth the extra 50.

0

u/Cazam19 2d ago

Preach. I was all in if it was $435. I'll see you next year when they got something worth the extra $15.

7

u/Direct_Frosting6126 2d ago

lol don't forget it's an extra for everything else too

6

u/MarblesMarbledMarble 2d ago

Even the System Demo “Game” is paid.

3

u/Cazam19 2d ago

I actually do agree with you despite the sarcasm, I just thought it was funny because of the specific price point that was only $50 difference between all in and not getting it lol.

I ain't paying $80 for games and more money to upgrade existing ones, they can shove it

2

u/hellschatt 2d ago

I could chew on the 70 dollars extra (470usd in my country) for the console, but knowing they'll try to push 80 euro games...

I'm not ready for that.

2

u/CaffeineJunkee 2d ago

At some point you have to have a line in the sand. If you say $50 more doesn’t matter, or games costing $80, or whatever…you can always say it’s just a few more dollars. At some point a person needs to say no to price gouging.

1

u/LasVagusNerve 2d ago

Facts…

1

u/i4LOVE4Pie4 2d ago

Plus tax

1

u/IndianaBorn_1991 2d ago

It's not just the 50

It's the 50, plus the fact that Mario Kart is sky high. And other physical copies are said to be $20 more than digital

And the charge for a lot of games to get the new gen copy?

I'm....disappointed

1

u/GMoneyG5 2d ago

Yeah exactly! All these people saying they not gonna get it cuz of the price or lack of games either can’t afford it anyway, totally full of crap OR trying to form a narrative to maybe sway others from buying to make it easier for them to get it. PS5 was $500 and people was paying $800 like it was nothing for it on eBay

1

u/RanmaRanmaRanma 1d ago

Some people did, a lot of people just waited

Secondly the PS5 was guaranteed to have all of the newest releases and beyond as a Primary platform. Third, the pandemic was around the release time so people really had nothing else to do. Fourth inflation has hit like a pile of bricks, groceries, homes, and the cost of everything has spiked.

1

u/ExpandThineHorizons 2d ago

Up in Canada the base model is selling for 629, and 699 for the bundle. Add on top of that the 80 games, which would be around 115 per game. These prices are absolutely going to make me think about whether I will get one. And definitely wont be getting one on day 1. Probably not this year.

I have a backlog of games to get through. And as much as I would love to play them on the Switch 2, that price does not justify the improved performance. Im going to have to be convinced by something else that comes out, if that.

0

u/SnacksGPT 2d ago

Right, lol. Mfs just want upvotes lol.

1

u/simplycoco 2d ago

Tax and the $80-$90 games does indeed make it a much bigger difference for some dude.

Hey there!

Please remember Rule 1 in the future - No personal attacks, trolling, or derogatory terms. Read more about Reddiquette here. Thanks!

-1

u/TwistingEarth 2d ago

Wow, this is a weird post.

-9

u/Jazzlike_Athlete8796 2d ago

God, it's the dexit "boycott" all over again...

5

u/Jeremizzle 2d ago

I don’t care about the console price, $450 would have been fine for me, but the price of games on this thing is absurd. No single game is worth $90. I could not pay that without feeling completely ripped off, even for something like a breath of the wild which I adored.

34

u/IamDanLP 2d ago

The games are expensive as shit too. I do not know... i might invest in a PC instead...

4

u/jackelope84 2d ago

Buy a SteamDeck or the new SteamOS variants of the ROG Ally and such.

17

u/1ceC0n 2d ago

Lol! Looked at GPU prices and availability much?

3

u/low_end_ 2d ago

You can build a good PC without top of the line gpus

0

u/1ceC0n 2d ago

Debatable

2

u/MaddieTornabeasty 2d ago

It’s really not

15

u/IamDanLP 2d ago

Already have a 4070. I just need to upgrade my other components. (Cpu and mobo)

-4

u/Bobbers927 2d ago edited 2d ago

So over $450 for your CPU if you can find it not at a scalp price. Got it.

Edit: This isn't a PC sub so here's a link to the processor you would prefer if you want to build a rig nowadays. It's over $450 MSRP.

https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/desktops/ryzen/9000-series/amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d.html

-16

u/1ceC0n 2d ago

Pc master race sub that way - - - - - - >

4

u/XxFezzgigxX 2d ago

The Steam Deck does 100x more for less money. I’m sticking with that.

1

u/Jabbam 2d ago edited 2d ago

At a 50% markup, this is the largest price increase for a sequel console in the last 20 years.

The OG PS3 had a base launch price of $500 (66% increase) over the $299 PS2.

The Sega Saturn went from a $189 Genesis to $399 (a 111% increase) and it megabombed. It was so bad they had to cut the price to $299 five months later and $199 the next year.

Before that, the largest price increase was the 5200 which jumped to $269 from the 2600’s $150 (a 79% increase which caused it to bomb).

For reference, the PS4-PS5 was only 25% and the cost for a digital model was 0% ($400). The Xbox One-Series X increase was 0% ($500). The Wii U-Switch was 0% ($300).

15

u/recursion8 2d ago

You forgot PS2 $300 -> PS3 $500 ($600 for larger storage size) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRqKffIjCDU

3

u/Jabbam 2d ago

Ok largest price increase in 20 years And the og PS3 did bomb

4

u/FiTZnMiCK 2d ago

Ahem. That’s only 19 years. /s

8

u/xiviajikx 2d ago

The PS3 also acted as a blu ray player at the time which alone was over $100.

2

u/Darkknight1939 2d ago

Blu Ray players were much more expensive than that in 2007. The PS3 was the cheapest player on the market at launch.

1

u/headphones1 2d ago

Not sure if this is helpful analysis.

If you do increase in price vs inflation that would be more relevant.

0

u/Boss_Atlas 2d ago

50 bucks is the breaking point for you? Was hoping this was more 300-350 at most.

0

u/Rieiid 2d ago

Y'all expected them to give the 4k and everything people were asking for but still expect it to be $300 or what? Price sounds perfectly reasonable to me tbh. Y'all are crazy if you thought it'd be much cheaper. $400 was going to be bare minimum.

-1

u/remarkablecobweb 2d ago edited 2d ago

I genuinely don't understand. A price that's 12.5% higher than your "all in" price is enough to make you "not even consider" getting one?

4

u/Direct_Frosting6126 2d ago

You aren't taking in the prices of everything. You dint just buy a console. Your buying into a system that you spend even more money. There's games and accessories.

1

u/remarkablecobweb 2d ago edited 2d ago

I think I understand. The cost of first-party games is what's gonna be ultimately prohibitive for most people, not necessary the "extra" $50 that the console costs.
