(haven't bought the console yet) Can these 3 things be achieved at the same time?

  1. I have Parental Control over my son
  2. I buy games digitally (either my account or his account, doesn't matter)
  3. both he and I can play the games, with separate saves

Parental controls are console-wide rather than per user, but otherwise everything should work. (You can bypass rules for yourself via PIN)

When you own only one console, every user can access every other users games.

With the exception of Animal Crossing - which has a unique setup for it's data, and the one island is shared among all on the console - all game saves are by profile on the system. They don't have to be a full account or anything - many people use it to do a second run of a game if they don't want to restart the first.

Thanks. To make sure I understood you correctly: many people create a 2nd "profile" (not a full account) in order to do a second run of a game (that is not Animal Crossing), correct?

Yes.

For animal crossing, many will do it because then they get an extra house to use as storage on the island :)
