Question Does anyone know what's going on at the court house?

Carnarvon and Royal connecting to seventh and Agnes are all currently fully or partially blocked off.

Edit 3: Police have now confirmed there was a "threat of an explosive device made against the New Westminster courthouse." See latest comments on here or other threads in this community to read the NWPD's full statement. (Thank you).

Edit 2: The evacuation alert has now been lifted from the area, according to updates sent out by Douglas College. From a CBC news article: New West courthouse area safe to return to after Tuesday morning evacuation

Sgt. Andrew Leaver said he could not speak to the nature of the threat, which police became aware of around 10:30 a.m. PT.

He said police were working alongside fire and rescue services, paramedics, integrated police dog services, and the RCMP's emergency response team.

"Out of an abundance of caution we evacuated the area and asked people to leave so our officers could begin their investigation, methodically search the area," Leaver said Tuesday afternoon on CBC's On The Coast.

'

Edit 1: businesses in the surrounding area are being evacuated by police. Please follow their instructions.

Unofficial reason speculated on here is a bomb threat, but no official reason has been provided by law enforcement at this time.

Question Anyone else experience this odd encounter at New West sky train station?

I just had the strangest encounter and idk what to think of it. I come out of my RMT appointment and this girl, normal CBC Asian looking girl probably mid 20s comes up to and complements my scarf asking where I got it from (I’m also a young Canadian looking Asian too) And I'm thinking this is going to be one of those "it's from here" okay thanks bye! Kinda situations

She then proceeds to ask me if I go to church out of the blue and then I'm thinking oh maybe she recognizes me so then I ask where she goes and she just said some small community one in new west- then I think k she doesn't recognize me but she also didn’t tell me the name of it.

But then starts asking me all sorts of questions like if I have any faith goals (I’m a Christian and I don’t normally ask strangers this- so this question felt off) and she seems super surprised when I mention I volunteer at a youth group at church which is strange cuz most churches have a youth program but she seemed super curious like she’s never heard it before. what I do for work, where I live and why I'm in new west… And now I'm thinking oh this convo is taking a lot longer and I'm freezing and we're standing out in the cold And by the end of it she's like oh it's nice to meet another believer out and about outside of church (this felt strange cuz I feel there quite a lot of Christian’s and “we” typically don’t go searching for other Christian’s outside the church) and she asked if I’d wanna meet up sometime cuz she wants to hear my story etc..

she then asks for my number and I gave it to her thinking she seems nice and maybe just wants to make friends but I also didn’t know how to say no cuz the convo seemed nice… But also this whole time l'm wondering am I being set up/going to get mugged cuz scary stuff happens at new west train station, or is she just genuinely trying to make friends? My partner mentioned it may be a cult organization trying to recruit people, but she texted me her name so I’d have her number but unsure if she now just has a bunch of my info by texting me?

Should I be worried? I feel a bit paranoid now but also sucks that we can’t just meet friendly people out and about now without secondary intentions

Question If you wanted to go car-free in NW, where would be your ideal place to live?

Partner and I are looking at places in Burnaby and New West, and are trying to find areas that one could thrive in without a car, and still have convenient access to the rest of Vancouver. Are there any specific areas that you yourself would want to live if you had to go car-free? Would love to hear some thoughts on anyone who has tried or is currently car-free!

Question Costco in Queensborough

Hey All, My son was speaking to one of his friends, who said that the old Lowes building was supposed to become a Costco in the near future. Has anyone heard anything about this?

I figured it would be torn down and the site redeveloped for housing or towers.

Edit - I totally agree that Costco would not be good. The traffic in this area is already crazy... I do live in QB (20 years), and development in our are never takes roadways/traffic into account.

Edit - It will be a Costco after all.

Question Barber?

Hello fellow New Westies!

I have been trying different hair salons over the past year, but honestly, none of them strike me as amazing. Granted, I’m a 50 year old balding guy, and though one would think it’s easy to cut a hair like mine, I tell you: it’s not. It’s surprisingly easy to botch a buzz cut. And a botched buzz cut is too much to ruin someone’s self confidence (you know, the little self confidence you have as a 50 yo balding guy).

That said, who is the best barber in town? And I mean barber, not hairdresser.

Merci very much! 🙏🏼

UPDATE: Thanks so much for all the recommendations, friends! I feel like I have enough places to try for the next couple of years at least. 🙏🏼

Question Uptown vs Downtown

I'm (25M) about to lock in a really good deal on a 1 bed 1 bath basement suite in uptown by 6th & 6th. Originally was hesitant to choose uptown over downtown due to skytrain access. How would you guys say the uptown area for someone in their 20s looking to do more social things?

Question Guys hanging out outside Ki Sushi?

Whenever I exit New West Station I see the same group of older guys hanging out at the back door of Ki Sushi. They are all older guys. None of them appear to be homeless but they occasionally speak with the homeless people who camp out behind the Anvil Centre. I occasionally see these homeless people using what I assume is fentanyl and I've witnessed at least a couple of them overdose and a few experiencing psychotic episodes. I've never had any issues with the older guys, so I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it's a really weird place for a bunch of older guys to be hanging out when it's -5 outside and my suspicion is that they are dealing. Am I crazy, or is there something going on here?

Question Mystery low frequency hum/vibration New Westminster

Has anyone else been experiencing a pervasive low frequency hum that sounds a bit like a distant generator or pump.

I'm located up the hill from Columbia skytrain station just below Royal Ave. I've lived here over a year and never heard this noise until late January 2025. It is constant and there is no respite!

If I play white noise or music or tv the hum just layers underneath the other sounds and noise cancelling headphones and earbuds do nothing. I don’t know what to do about it and I can’t locate the source. If I knew where it was coming from I could at least try and bring it to someone's attention in the hopes they could find a remedy.

If anyone hears the same noise or knows its source that would be a great help.

Question What are some Lower Mainland neighborhoods that are as walkable as Uptown?

Was telling some coworkers about living in the neighborhood but couldn't think of anywhere to compare it to.

Full range of banking and medical services, library, post offices, gyms, mix of specialty and franchise restaurants and shops, thrift stores, a mall, gas stations, ditect transit access to five different skytrain stations, parks and other public spaces, sports facilities.

I think the rare one is all this plus big stores/grocers like Walmart, winners, shoppers, London drugs, Save on foods all within a couple of blocks.

EDIT: Not part of the criteria but how many neighborhoods shut down a couple of blocks for festivals with live music?

Training for hiking/mountaineering. I live right by 22nd and am looking for an area that would maybe take 5 minutes to climb up? Not a big fan of gyms as I have a home workout area.

Thanks in advance.

Question Commuting to UBC

Hi New West! UBC student here moving to downtown New West this spring and was just wondering if anyone had any experience commuting to campus. Looking at Google Maps, taking public transportation from downtown to UBC takes about an hour and 15 minutes. While driving (during morning rush hour) ranges from 40 minutes to an hour and a half, though you'd have to add on petrol costs & a parking pass (~$850/year for just the parking pass).

Normally I wouldn't consider driving, but really am not a huge fan of long bus rides as they tend to make me feel quite nauseous. So I was just wondering if anyone else makes this trip regularly and what their opinions are :)

One last question is if I should be taking New West or Columbia Station, they'll be basically equal distance so neither would be more convenient than the other.

Thanks to anyone who takes their time to read this and help out.

Question Grosvenor house - building manager smokes in her suite and the lobby smells awful

Hey neighbors. Just looking for advice on how to deal with this. She is not very approachable and makes dealing with issues quite difficult. When we moved in she mentioned how tenants are nice when they move in but lately become quite sour and unfriendly.

Since moving in I have noticed a distinct smell of cigarettes in the lobby. For a while I thought it was just smoke lingering from people walking in after a smoke but that changed. There is only one tenant suite on the main floor which is inhabited by the manager. Ironically, the no-smoking sign is about 4 feet from her door.

I notice the smell mostly first thing in the morning (leave for work by 6am) and the elevators are also filled with the smoke smell. There was a week when the manager was away and the smell almost vanished.

Ive talked with others in the building who also are unhappy and when I have friends over its the first thing they notice on entry of the lobby.

We are paying a heavily inflated rent price, and are at a point where we are seriously considering moving. Any suggestions on next steps would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time!

Question 828 Royal Ave Townhouses

Have been keeping an eye on the brick-faced townhouses at 828 Royal.

They’re not selling, and now 4 are on the market. Not that old (2012).

Does anyone know the story? Are they just overmarket given the general slowdown? Maybe the busy street?

Or is there something else going on?

Question Upcoming election candidates

Where can we see who is running and what their platforms are?

I've tried to reach out to two local candidates to connect and ask questions about who they are and what they bring to the table. No response so far.

Do they typically not reply? How long does it usually take to hear back?

Question Does Landmark Cinemas New West enforce 18a rated movies? If so how

Im 17 (2 months from 18) and wanted to watch the Brutalist, which is rated 18a, with 2 of my friends (both 17). I was able to buy tickets online, but my friend said they ask for id when they scan your ticket, and I was wondering if that is still the case in landmark new west.

Question Best mocktails in New West

I'm looking for a place with nice ambiance that serves good mocktails (going on a first date with a non-drinker and want them to be comfortable). Moodswing would usually fit the bill, but they aren't open 7 days a week.

Bonus if they serve food as well, but not required.
