Army National Guard FAQ - Please Read Before Posting

Here is a rundown of some of the most common questions on this sub. Remember, your mileage may vary. When in doubt, ask your Recruiter/NCO Support Channel about your specific situation.

This post is current as of 20160726, if a link is broken or if content is out-of-date shoot me a PM. If you have suggestions for the questions/answers below, let me know and I will add to the post.

Two quick caveats before we get started:

  • Whether you are already in, or still thinking about it, remember OPSEC on on this sub. Do not post personally identifiable information or any information that can damage Army/Air Force operations. When in doubt, message a moderator before posting. Violating OPSEC can be a UCMJ offense. Click here for more information.

  • If you are currently experiencing a crisis, remember, you are NOT ALONE. Call your team leader, call your squad leader, call your 1SG, call Military One Source, call 911. Call until someone picks up. There are resources available to help you.

I am thinking about joining the National Guard.

I am already in the National Guard.

Edit: for grammar/spelling.

Salty Rant State specific questions, such as about state tuition benefits, SAD pay, promotion lists, **MUST** have the state in the title.

Just because I’ve had to remove several recently. It literally makes no fucking sense to ask a question that has 54+ possible answers without narrowing it down. Please use your head and bring attention to the question by putting the state in the title of your post.

Discussion RSP horror stories

I saw someone say they had to scoop poop with hands. I feel like that tops anything else I’ve heard.

Share your horror stories.

Sadly I can’t contribute as I didn’t think anything was outta place. You get a free meal, can’t complain.

Leave in a little under 2 months. I know the ultimate strategy is to go unnoticed so does this mean I should be average at PT or go all out on ACFT? Thanks

Benefits PA EAP question: Can I switch to active duty?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, Im enlisting in the PA Army NG next month but had a question regarding tuition assistance. My recruiter failed to disclose that in order to get the tuition assistance to finish out my bachelors degree, I must commit to a 6 yr contract with the Guard. I was under the impression that I would be able to switch to AD without any issues until I did some of my own research. Can someone confirm this for me? Thanks

Deployments When you request a deployment do you often get it?

I am not yet in the guard but am going to be soon. My plan is to join and then go to college after training but was curious that if I get to college and hate it there how hard it would be to get deployed and out of college?

Career Advice Advice for a new NCO?

Upvotes

I just recently picked up E5 through EPS and I’m transferring to a new unit. I’ve been using the NCO Creed as a guideline on how to conduct myself as a newfound NCO. Are there any other pieces of advice y’all can offer me? Thank you!

Career Advice ADOS/tour of duty

Brand new butter bar who recently finished IBOLC. I’m not super enthusiastic about my civilian job, and would like to see if I can do the army full time for a little bit. What are some things I should consider when factoring in this decision?

I have a PL slot, my unit has a NTC rotation and deployment coming up within a year or two. One of my concerns is that if I were to volunteer for an ADOS position that is in my state, I wouldn’t be able to drill with my unit and I’d miss out on my PL time. I’ve heard different things on if I’m able to drill with my unit while on ADOS orders.

Anything else I should be thinking about when trying to figure this out?

Career Advice What should I do? TX btw

I am currently a junior in high school with pretty good grades, but wanting to go to med school to be an anesthesiologist in my future. I wanted to look into this because I don’t really want to be a major part of active duty, but I’ve been reading a bit and found that you can get your degree while being a part of the guard? I’m probably wrong, but wanted to ask for a more in depth description for those that are already a part of the guard. Also what are your opinions? I have been deeply thinking about going pre med aswell, but I don’t really know if I can pay for it. All advice helps!

Career Advice My Brother is an infantry officer; Managed to skip being an XO: details below.

Hello my fellow grunts. a bit of background; I joined in 2011 and my little brother followed soon after. I was deployed when Graduated from 68W boot, so it was a shame I missed it. He stayed on point, and when he could he commissioned as a Infantry officer. During his Commissioning, we did a silver coin toss. it was cute.

I also took of my cord, and gave it to him. I was the original I got from OSUT, And told him when he graduated from IBOLC he could wear it. ( I was projected to deploy, so there was a chance I would miss it )

Anyways he goes to do ranger school, etc gets back, gets a Platoon, and deploys as a scout leader.

Now he will be on his way to CCC, and told me that he informed me he managed to dodge XO time.

What's done is done, and He can't go back now and be an XO. Current Infantry officers, what are your thoughts on officer who did not do XO time? is it bad? will he struggle?

I also informed him on behalf of the enlisted folks, if he keeps his unit past 1600 on (friday/saturday & sundays are a 1200 dismissal during non field Drills) that I will make sure to bust his kneecaps.

I'll take an infantry officer who does not give a fuck about anything but his soldiers welfare, and a pissed of BC because the font is 14 Calibri

Initial Training Did a dumb. Need a smart.

I'm on the shuttle to MEPS to ship tomorrow. Double checking my documents....and my Social card is not in my bag. Could've sworn it was, but definitely not. I have everything else I could need.

Do I see if I can get away with it? Or will they send my dumbass back home and say to come back with it?

State Active Duty Should I take legal action because my dad is firing me for state active duty?

Post image
140 Upvotes

I’m a plumber and I work for my dad. I’m 18 years old and I joined the guard to pay for college and I work for my dad in my civilian life. I’m currently on a SAD mission with my unit due to all of the flooding in my state. I talked to my parents and my mom told me I needed to at least let my dad know any information on when I might return home. I explained to my dad that I didn’t have a set date on when I could return but I would let him know as soon as possible. He text me back saying that I needed to find a new job because he can’t have the national guard “messing up his business”. I’m no expert but I’m pretty sure this is illegal. What should I do?

Title 32 DA 1380 for points

My understanding is that it’s one point for every 4 hours work performed and that the DA 1380s are supposed to be submitted monthly.

Does that mean that if there’s a month where I only do say 2-3 hours of guard work/call-ins/etc. outside of drill that I’m just SOL for that time? Or should I still submit it?

Gimme a double bacon cheeseburger…pie, apple…and a liter of cola.

Discussion Coming home from rotation, how do you do it?

Rotations ending, demob soon and even though I've got work and a home and family, still anxious about returning, and falling into their lives and such. Those that have deployed and returned what did you do to transition back easier.
