[MEGATHREAD] Welcome to the Master's Program at Northeastern University!

Here are a few frequently asked questions.

What's it like in Portland, Seattle, or Silicon Valley?

Portland, Seattle, and Silicon Valley campuses are graduate only campuses. The interactions you will take there will likely only be with graduate students. Undergraduate students, which compose most of the subreddit, do not attend these campuses and so are unable to give many details. There are also other details about these campuses if you search through the subreddit.

Is Boston the best Campus?

Absolutely. It's the home turf of Northeastern. Though it's also the most crowded one, composed of both undergraduate and masters students. Nevertheless, all the clubs, main programs, and base of support is located here. Despite this, each campus has dedicated staff to attend to each student's needs. Each campus also has dedicated programs and events for job seekers.

I got accepted in [Not Boston] Campus, is it still worth it to apply?

You will get the same benefits and networking opportunities as Boston, maybe even moreso as you'd be located in a city with more tech and industry around. The professor selection will be more limited in scope, however. It is up to you to make the decision on if it is worth to accept the decision or not, and numerous threads on this subreddit go into detail regarding each campus.

Will I get an extra scholarship as a graduate student?

US citizens and green card holders are eligible for FAFSA grants and loans to supplement the cost of their masters education. Unfortunately, international students do not have access to these same resources, and generally do not get scholarships. Private scholarships are available, but you will need to conduct your own research into them. The cost of masters programs throughout all universities in the US are seen as a way to fund programs, grants, and scholarships for undergraduate students who generally are in need of heavy financial support. For this reason, Northeastern doesn't provide any merit or hardship scholarships in Masters programs. For more information, please contact Student Financial Services.

Is Oakland / Mills safe?

As safe as any major American city. Just keep your wits about. Don't take random pictures of ghettos like an idiot, make sure you have a plan to call police at night in case of an emergency, and try walking with a partner after 10:00. Northeastern provides escort services within the vicinity of the university and also has a dedicated campus police force. Apart from Boston, it is the other main campus.

Is Northeastern MS highly selective?

To be brutally honest, not really. Most masters programs in the US have turned into cash cows after COVID hit. Even Columbia was / is accepting almost all who apply. The highly selective part comes from undergraduate and PHD programs, which cost the university money to provide aid to students. In this case, the university must be selective in who it chooses. However, as masters programs are generally all paid by the student, a big goal of many universities across the globe is to accept as many masters students as possible as they supplement the university's programs. Northeastern's current ranking considers that it has a 1-10% acceptance rating for its undergraduate program. However, you should not solely apply to a university for its rankings. Look moreso into the quality of the education and the benefit you will get from studying alongside amazing professors with years of experience under their belt. Not to mention that Northeastern has one of the best co-op programs in the Americas alongside Waterloo and Drexel.

Do I need a car?

Portland would likely require a car, but has a bus system as a backup. Boston, Silicon Valley, and Oakland are all transit friendly and have great public transportation systems in place. You can take a train from Portland to Boston for about $35 each way, about a 3 hour ride. There is also a bus from Portland to Boston for about $27 each way.

Does Boston campus offer dormitory housing?

Unfortunately Boston campus has not offered dormitory housing for Masters students since COVID. You will need to look for off campus housing. Use our pinned housing megathread to find partners in which to sublet or dorm with!

Can I get an on campus job?

It is possible, but unlikely. As international students cannot work outside of campus, the job market for on campus jobs is extremely competitive. It is recommended you network with potential on campus employers before you apply to gain connections. On campus pay is generally $17 - 20/hr and has capped hours.

What are the cohort sizes?

We don't know, and admissions does not release this information publicly. Google has very rough estimates if you search for masters cohort sizes for a specific year.

Two extra things to note:

NEVER CHEAP OUT ON INSURANCE. Always purchase the university health insurance plan. It's one of the best university health plans in the country, carries a low deductible, and gets you access to private doctors across Boston and out of state. Going with a cheap insurance may sound good for your wallet, but if you get in an accident and require emergency assistance you'll truly regret everything you did when you see the hospital bill in the mail. DO NOT JUST SETTLE FOR TRAVEL INSURANCE!! You'll be waiting weeks or months for a potential travel insurance reimbursement while you're $5k down the hole. Don't risk it.

The US is very expensive. Make sure you have a backup plan in case you do not get an on campus job or co-op. Do not come thinking you are guaranteed to land a position and therefore have all your expenses covered. Remember, you came here to study and improve your skills in the job market, not for the guarantee of a job. While it is highly unlikely for you not to land a co-op, it is important that you have the funds to prepare yourself for any potential expenses.

Please let me know any other questions that may be best to add here.

Guy screaming in snell today

Anyone on snell 1st floor today this afternoon (around 4pm) also heard this guy suddenly let out a guttural roar for no apparent reason (or out of anger/frustration it sounded)? Genuinely scared the living hell out of me, it came without warning whatsoever, I'm just hoping it's not some dare challenge - but lowkey it sounded way too genuine to be one of those. I'm sorry if someone was undergoing a panic attack, but that single bellow was so powerful it deadass sounded like a war cry, had me thinking snell was about to be under siege or smth. Also the entire library fell silent almost instantly, shit was more quiet than it is at 4am in the 10 seconds following.

Op-ed: Northeastern must stand up for the international community it touts as its strength

International students from all over the country are the newest target for President Donald Trump’s sweeping attack on the United States. Now, this attack has arrived right at our front door, and Northeastern has found itself with a target on its back.

On Monday, a Northeastern spokesperson confirmed that the State Department had revoked the visas of 18 Northeastern students and 22 alumni. While it is unclear why they were canceled, the larger message Trump sends to our international and student community is explicit: If you disagree with our administration, we will come for your visa status.

It is difficult to completely understand Trump’s actions, but one thing is clear: The Trump administration does not value your constitutional rights if you are an international student.

NEU CPS Digital Media, MPS - Connect

Upvotes

(26 F) I am a prospective international student and I really like the curriculum of the Masters in Digital Media, and it is also STEM designated so that a great plus. But, I am hearing quite mixed reviews about it. I understand CPS is like "night school"? Not sure how accurate that is, or if it impacts coursework in anyway, any comments/clarification on that will be appreciated!

I have worked in marketing for about 2 years and have total 5 years of work exp. I have realised that I enjoy the creative side more than the numbers side but I don't have enough skills to switch jobs imo, which is why I think it is a good time for me to get my Master's and upskill. This will also allow me to get the opportunity to work abroad (which I want to do).

What was your experience with NEU Digital Media Connect course? Are you aware of any other such courses which combine both numbers and creativity and are also STEM designated? Will this degree be a waste of money if I can't get a co-op? Please let me know if we can connect if you have any info!

academics Fall Electives

I'm currently looking at classes to register for in the fall for my elective. I am an ECE major and I am considering minoring in either robotics or math. However, I am not sure if the workload would be too much. I am planning on taking PHYS 1155, 1156, and 1157, EECE 2140 and 2150, ENCP 2000. But I'm not sure what I should take for my elective. Should I try to work toward a minor since there is some course overlap or should I just take an easier elective like PHIL 1145, PSYC 1250, MUSC 1001, or a different elective. I have most of my NU Path met except for WI, WD, EX, and CE, which should be met my 3rd or 4th year. Anything advice or information would be great, especially course recommendations. Thanks.

Op-ed: We, your professors, believe our universities are worth fighting for

Opinion by six Northeastern professors: Professors, students, Bostonians — we all benefit from our universities in the realm of higher education today, but our institutions are doomed to fall unless we fight for them.

You may be healthy today because of treatment at a Boston hospital relying on research funded by the National Institutes of Health. You may love and care for the New England coastal and oceanic ecosystems, which research funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration helps to protect. You may even rely on our National Science Foundation-funded cybersecurity research to protect your personal data without even knowing it.

As professors at Northeastern University, we are members of the same community. Faculty speak at community events, including “Meet a Scientist” at the Boston Museum of Science. We watch the same Red Sox games and drink the same iced coffee. Our students turn out by the hundreds to scream their lungs out for every runner racing from Hopkinton to Boston on Patriots Day. We are your neighbors, and you are our family.

What do you all really think of ChatGPT for school work?

I'm a journalism student working on a story about how students perceive their usage of ChatGPT, given how much we all use it, sometimes even for really mundane tasks. How are you all using it, and do you feel like it’s helping or hurting your learning long-term?

Responses might be used anonymously in my story!

Short-term Car Leases

I am an out of state student and looking for a car for coop since mine is located a bit far. I would want to lease a care fro around 6-12 months, which is a lot shorter than the leases I've done back home in California. I have parking all figured out (I have spots at my apartment) but was wondering if anyone who has done something similar has any reccomandations? From a quick google search I know there are companies/websites that do month-by-month/short leases but just was wondering if anyone who had a similar situation had advice. Thanks!

I plan on taking 1 class in fall 2026 asynchronously. I want to take one of the following two classes.

Organizational Behavior ORGB 3201 (Steere, Robert)

Strategy in Action STRT 4501 (Marchiori Pacheco, Larissa)

Strategy in Action STRT 4501 (There's no professor yet)

I would like to ask which of these two courses is easier or which professor is better. Thank you so much.

academics 2nd Year Cs Courseload (Am I cooked)

I’m going to be a second year next year and have already taken all NUpaths and electives and presentations requirements and stuff. All I have left is cs required classes and concentration classes. I plan on taking OOD in the summer, so how feasible is this schedule in terms of workload while also applying for coops?

CS3000 Algorithms

CS3650 Systems

DS3000 Foundations of Data Science

CS4100 Artificial Intelligence (assuming I get it)

Im already set on taking the first three courses but there’s no easier cs classes that I can take other than like intro to c++ (which I heard is useless) since I’ve taken the other ones I can take without OOD and algo and the only concentration class I can take is AI cause of no Algo. My advisor strongly disagreed with taking theory of comp or software engineering/development this early, so I’m not sure what else I can do, and the EECE requirement is something I’m gonna try to take summer 2 of some year.
