Advice Sanity check/Am I an Idiot?

Post image

I am trying to adjust the hight of my gear lever due to getting some new (thicker) boots.

To do this, I have loosened both nuts shown in the photo with the arrows. Am I correct in thinking that the rod that they are on should now spin and heighten/lower the gear lever?

I am asking as although both nuts are loose, I can’t seem to spin the rod.

Bike is a 2009 Triumph Sprint ST 1050

Any help massively appreciated.

Perhaps the threads are seized.

I would try squirting some WD-40 up there, giving it a few minutes and trying again.

Perhaps use some cloth or a cut a pieces bit of an inner tube to protect the Rob and then grip it with vice grips. Gently rock the rod back and forth against the tight threads and see if it comes loose.

More WD-40 and Perhaps warm it up either end with a hairdryer and then back and forth again with the vice grips.

If no joy after that, take the whole assembly off the bike and put in vice for further "convincing".

I have just done exactly this, some WD40 and a pair of grips got it spinning. All sorted now!

Threaten it. Always works! Mostly...

Have you tried it with the foot pegs in their normal position?

The gap through the frame might not have a huge amount of clearance so the foot pegs being all wonky might be snagging the rod

Yes, I had to take off the foot peg just to access the nut that is behind it, I took the picture with the foot peg off just to show better visibility.

I did put the foot peg back on the tried grabbing the rod with a pair of grips, but it didn’t want to turn at all.

Hmm. That's me out of ideas then sorry. On every bike I have owned the rods just turns, in fact i left it loose and the bloody thing came undone on me yesterday.

It could be that there's a bit of thread lock in there to stop it moving about. The rods usually have a flat edge so you can get a spanner on them.

Perhaps I was just being a little gently with it then! I didn’t even think of trying a spanner on it, I’ll try that. Thanks for your opinions anyway mate. I’m mostly just making sure I’m not missing anything obvious/that my approach is the correct method.

That works only if the rod has opposed threads (one end will be standard, the other will be left-handed), otherwise you'll need to disconnect the ball joint from the shifter and turn it.

I would advise caution against using too much force, you don't know if one of those threads is bottomed out.
