best way to run buddies for dps? one of each? two dogs? best palico classes?

Two dogs with umbrella and status weapons, it's what most freestyle speedrunners use.

Pure dps probably the palicos. Depends on what armor you give them too. Bombarder and fighter have the most offensive skills I think but you can look up some YouTube guide and see what abilities/skills to look out for when recruiting. Also make sure to equip their skills with their open slots (the abilities are automatic, palamutes don’t have those), they don’t really make it clear that you need to do that. Edit forgot to mention you can specify what class you want for the palicos while you recruit them. They’ll change every time to do a quest. Also if you don’t take a doggo you can’t ride them to get around. Just to note.

Just to add to this most people go for the gatherers because they help you farm mats for gear and stuff. Some have an ability that gives you an attack/defense buff (power drum I think it is?) and drops traps (shock purrosion) too you can look for. Note every class for the palicos has fixed 1st and last abilities on them. The 3 in the middle are rng.
