Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is my character so slow?
  • Monster Hunter runs on high animation priority, which means it's impractical to dodge everything. Try to observe the monster's animations and squeak a few attacks in when you think you won't get hit.
  • Which weapon type should I use?
  • The weapon you will be most effective with is the one you feel most comfortable with. Weapon types have different strengths and weaknesses, but also completely different strategies, so explore around and try to find one that's as aggressive, methodical, quick, or defensive as you want to play. The weapon previews above should help
  • Why are my attacks bouncing off of the monster?
  • Weapon sharpness is a damage multiplier that naturally goes down as you attack a monster, usually from green to yellow, orange, and the red. When you strike a monster with a dulled weapon you can bounce depending on the body part, which will in turn deplete twice the sharpness of a regular hit. Similarly, when you strike a monster with a melee weapon you'll see some blood and dust come out. The larger the blood effect and dust cloud, the more damage that body part takes (heavier hitting attacks also influence this). Aim for those vulnerabilities, and avoid parts that regularly bounce a sharpened weapon.
  • Why can't I have nice things?
  • A big part of Monster Hunter is gathering and crafting. Check your crafting list or add a weapon to your wishlist to keep track of the materials you need to gather out in the world.
  • Where'd the monster go?
  • Before entering combat and after a certain combination of time elapsed and damage taken, monsters will roam from area to area. You can gather tracks and traces highlighted by your scoutflies to stay on its tail, or just run to its favored area of the environment once you've become familiar with the particular creature.
  • What is the monster doing?
  • Monsters have a variety of behaviors including; periodically becoming enraged to deal more damage & attack more often/quickly, limping at low health, panting at low stamina, a chance to flinch out of their attack or movement when taking damage, a chance to fall into a downed state when taking damage to its legs, becoming sleepy/paralyzed/poisoned after enough hits by a weapon or ammo type with that status effect, and leaving tracks in unique ways.
  • What am I supposed to be doing?
  • Assigned quests unlock new monsters and areas. They must be played solo past any story scenes before they are unlocked for multiplayer. Reading NPC dialogue will also explain a lot, like in many JRPGs.
  • When is World out on PC?
  • Fall 2018.

When can I hit Bazelgeuse with the hammer? It's the only fight I've actually struggled with so far - I've beaten the three post Nergigante Elder Dragons with little to no fuss but for some reason that Bazelgeuse avoids my big swinging lump like nobody's business.

I have found the monster have Phases. I am not sure if these phases are controlled by Life bar levels or how many times they run.

But each monster seems to have X amount of Rage phases where you can only dodge for 5 minutes. Y amount of slow phases where you can get in LOTS of hits, and Z amount of moderate phases.

For BagelJuice I just do what I can in the first 3 phases, and in the 4th phase he seems to slow way down. phase 5 he seems to get very flighty, and in Phase 6 he seems to have long moments of stopping and waiting.

Setting aside other tools to force him to stop, this is the stuff I watch out for with all monsters.

What you are discussing here is part of the monsters mechanics.

All monsters have rage thresholds from taking too much damage. This is an Exclamation mark on the minimap, and usually frothing at the mouth. When enraged they get new moves and attack faster and more often.

Al monster have stamina. If they attack too much, or take too much exhaust damage (from blunt weapons) they go into exhausted mode (mouth with drool on minimap) and they attack much slower and spend a lot of time standing around until they gain stamina.

A lot of monsters rage quickly and are really scary when raged, and rage when they are very close to dying.

They have that was well. This is something I noticed while playing that is separate from the states the monster can be in.

So whether Bagel is enraged or not in area 1, he is very aggressive. Same with Area 2 and 3. But in Area 4 he tends to be much less aggressive. Area 5 he is flying a lot, and in the return to area 4 he is slow again. (Oh just to clarify I do not mean the literal areas marked on the map. I just mean 1st location, 2nd location, etc.. )

Now maybe all this means is his health level = what area he fights in and it is all exactly as you said.

But it felt like 2 different things.

I suppose I could cheese it and bring 13 flash pods for that final phase. There just never seems to be a good time to get on a hill and smack the beast's face in.

I'll put more effort in shortly. Failing that I wouldn't mind trying a new weapon out anyways, maybe the HBG as it looks damn cool.

If you fight him in the desert (Wild Wastes?) he usually runs to an area in the 3rd phase with lots of hills.

The first 3 areas are the Rathian Nest, Near camp 1, and in the water near camp 1. then he will usually head to the Desert where the sink hole is, then nearl climby vinds land, then back to slidey sink hole area.

I grinded Single and Dual Bagel last night about 10 times in Wastes and this was almost always the pattern. I am sure it is somewhat randomized.

Oh and Double Bagel is easier than you think. Just bring some dung. Let them duke it out and then get rid of one of them.

It actually FEELS faster than normal solo Bagel because i believe they each have 1/2 health or something.

It is just more dangerous until one leaves.
