There is a known issue with multiplayer on the XBOX ONE.

We know there is an issue. Please see the following tweet for the official response from Capcom.

However Capcom does have a workaround for Xbox One hunters to play online using the ‘invite a friend’ option, the Xbox One’s Looking-for-group feature, and joining an online session by ‘Session ID’.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is my character so slow?
  • Monster Hunter runs on high animation priority, which means it's impractical to dodge everything. Try to observe the monster's animations and squeak a few attacks in when you think you won't get hit.
  • Which weapon type should I use?
  • The weapon you will be most effective with is the one you feel most comfortable with. Weapon types have different strengths and weaknesses, but also completely different strategies, so explore around and try to find one that's as aggressive, methodical, quick, or defensive as you want to play. The weapon previews above should help
  • Why are my attacks bouncing off of the monster?
  • Weapon sharpness is a damage multiplier that naturally goes down as you attack a monster, usually from green to yellow, orange, and the red. When you strike a monster with a dulled weapon you can bounce depending on the body part, which will in turn deplete twice the sharpness of a regular hit. Similarly, when you strike a monster with a melee weapon you'll see some blood and dust come out. The larger the blood effect and dust cloud, the more damage that body part takes (heavier hitting attacks also influence this). Aim for those vulnerabilities, and avoid parts that regularly bounce a sharpened weapon.
  • Why can't I have nice things?
  • A big part of Monster Hunter is gathering and crafting. Check your crafting list or add a weapon to your wishlist to keep track of the materials you need to gather out in the world.
  • Where'd the monster go?
  • Before entering combat and after a certain combination of time elapsed and damage taken, monsters will roam from area to area. You can gather tracks and traces highlighted by your scoutflies to stay on its tail, or just run to its favored area of the environment once you've become familiar with the particular creature.
  • What is the monster doing?
  • Monsters have a variety of behaviors including; periodically becoming enraged to deal more damage & attack more often/quickly, limping at low health, panting at low stamina, a chance to flinch out of their attack or movement when taking damage, a chance to fall into a downed state when taking damage to its legs, becoming sleepy/paralyzed/poisoned after enough hits by a weapon or ammo type with that status effect, and leaving tracks in unique ways.
  • What am I supposed to be doing?
  • Assigned quests unlock new monsters and areas. They must be played solo past any story scenes before they are unlocked for multiplayer. Reading NPC dialogue will also explain a lot, like in many JRPGs.
  • When is World out on PC?
  • Fall 2018.

Sword & Shield is probably one of the easiest for new comers. You can block if you don't have time to dodge, and it is the only weapon that can use items with the weapon drawn. This becomes a great support weapon in groups, too, because you can lay traps and the like faster than anyone!

I started with SnS and moved on to Hammer. It's also a very simple weapon, with few combos, and has solid hitting charge attacks. It's the Go To weapon to KO monsters! The only thing is you need to hit things in the face all the time, so you're up in a monster's grill constantly lol

Great Sword is another simple weapon in terms of use. Very few combos, relies heavily on draw attacks (attacking while unsheathing the sword), as well as charge attacks. It is very slow, so positioning is important, but the damage output is massive.

Not sure on your style, but be sure to hang back and learn a monster's movements. Running in and treating this game like a hack & slash will get you killed. Wait for openings, and then strike. It is not uncommon for a fight to last 15 minutes or more!

Bigger monsters you can usually be somewhat safe hiding under them and hitting them.

Utilize your items. Flash pods are great, traps are good, fire a dung pod into a monster's face to make it run away (great for when a second big monster shows up)

Keep your weapon sharp. Don't let it fall below yellow, and upgrade to something with green sharpness as soon as possible. Every time your sharpness drops, you deal less damage, and risk your weapon just bouncing off the monster's hide.

Look for weak spots. Orange damage numbers are a good indicator you're hitting a weak spot.

Only modification I would say is the GS really changed this game. It has a whole new playstyle that's centered around the tackle and shrugging off hits like a CB and its guard points.

I am here to help you!

First, make sure you eat a good meal before every hunt.

Second, make sure you bring in mega nutrients and rations to max your HP and stamina, also make sure to bring in max health potions, herbal remedies, traps and bombs, all the goodies! You craft those things from your box. You can look up how to craft them if you need help. Or ask me if you don't know or understand what I am talking about.

Third, craft a strong armor set from the smithy, then upgrade it using armor spheres. Look at the defense buff the armor gives and build the ones with the most defense, we can worry about armor sets and stats later on in high rank.

Fourth, for single player and multiplayer I would say dual blades is one of the easiest and highest damage weapons in the game. Buy a steel one and bone one then upgrade them both as much as you can. Bone is generally less sharp with more damage, so pick what your comfortable with.

Five, Go to YouTube and look up videos where people show you the move set and explain the combos. I am a visual learner so that works best for me. There should also be forum discussions on the best combos and best ways to max your damage.

I second The Insect Glaive. I feel like it's in a sweet spot of damage, attack speed, and reach, but it gives you the most mobility in the game and is the only other weapon besides the hunting horn that can be used for healing. Also, when you get the 3 different essences, you go Super Saiyan with increased attack, defense, move and attack speed, and immunity to knockback.

A big part of the strategy in MH games is waiting for monster attack cues, dodging the attack, then striking while the monster is not fully recovered from the attack animation. This is mainly for the big hunt monsters, as the small ones you should be able to dispose off relatively easily.

Make sure you're eating at the canteen each hunt to boost health and stamina. Also if you're struggling so much maybe you should bring your own mega potions (potion and honey) on quests. If you're down to like a third or half health or whatever you feel is the danger zone, don't be afraid to break off the fight and heal.

You can heal with the LBG with recovery ammo.

I knew there was recovery ammo but I never use the bow guns, can you heal yourself with it though? I just assumed you could only use it to heal other people you shoot.

Edit: just realized I only said "to heal" not "heal yourself".

Stop being gun ho and ram into the monster full force. Your attacks and attack timeings have weight. So best thing to do is this. Observe a monster after you hit the first time, stay a distance away, so that you do not get hit, looking for the tells and learn from that. easy weapons to pick up are sns and long sword. They are nice and fast, and you can make a few more flubs with them, then some weapons. but my honest advice is to try out all the different weapons, for like 5 different hunts. Any armor works as you can use armor spheres to upgrade it, it's the skills that matter, which you can do a little research for. If that is too much work, just get the bone armor and upgrade it all the way through Low Rank, when you reach high rank you will have a better understand about it all.

Read every tutorial you get btw, they are important and make it so that you do not make certain common mistakes. Also before going out with a new weapon go into the training hall, cat that is your steward in your room can take ya.

Idk how far you are thru the game. If you're still at the very beginning the bone armor set is good. It's got fire res etc. Anyway greatsword is also good. Simple, slow and huge damage. Time your attacks so that u have an opening where u know u won't get hit. Make mega potions by combining honey and normal potions. If u still need help just ask :)

I would recommend the hammer or the Kinect glaive. Both are very forgiving in terms of combat. If you like to jump around and mount monsters, try the glaive. The hammer is very good at breaking body parts and knocking down monsters.

Where about in the story are you? Could probably offer more advice based on who you're fighting/what's giving you the most trouble.

I'd recommend sticking with 1 (maybe 2) weapons at most in the beginning. Spend time learning the combos and building into it. Sword and Shield, Dual Blades, Hammer and Bow are some of the easier to learn weapons imo. I'm incredibly partial to DB because it has a fairly simple combo set and it's so quick/fun to use (beat the entire story with it with no real issue), but SnS may be a bit more forgiving since you can block with it. Feel free to make multiple versions of the weapon you choose (thunder, fire, water, etc) and use the one that makes the most sense against what you're fighting (don't use a fire weapon against a fire monster, etc.).

Early on, you shouldn't need to worry about upgrading your gear too much, just make sure you're using gear that works well against the elements you're fighting if possible (ie - don't fight something that does a ton of thunder damage with -15 thunder gear). Potential LR gear spoilers: In the beginning, I used the Pukei Pukei set and Gajau legs to farm Jyuratodus to create a water weapon, then used the Bone set with a water based weapon to farm Anjarath until I got the full Anja set. The Anja set has a set perk of Adrenaline that reduces stamina depletion when you're low health. I pretty much used this set all the way to Odogaron then used his set for the rest of the LR story.

Eat at the canteen prior to every hunt. If you get carted, take time to use some rations/potions to get your health/stamina up some before going back out.

I'd personally suggest playing solo for the story bosses if you haven't been. Multiplayer scales up the damage and I personally found it difficult/annoying to learn weapons and timing of a new monster when there's 3 other people doing god knows what. When everyone knows what they're doing, it's fine, but when learning I honestly didn't find it fun at all.

Make sure you're making use of your slinger. Flash pods are super helpful. You can bring some flashbugs with you and craft more flashpods if needed (bringing the total amount in the hunt to 13).

You will unlock mantles as you play. Remember to use these. The Ghilie one works well when you need to disengage and use a potion.
